I laughed, I cried, I really liked it. Very good depiction of the warrior ethos, especially in the final battle. No sex - a welcome change. Two thumbs up.

I was like mffjm in that I avoided it for quite a while b/c of Cruise, but I finally rented it a couple weeks ago and was impressed. Of course, I ruined the feel-good by watching the extras on the DVD and listening to Cruise talk about the connection he felt to Bushido and the warrior culture...that little ego whore that he is.

You guys don't understand Hollywood. Lots of relationships for publicity. Gay men and lesbians getting married and having kids together. It is considered normal here. LOL

Counselor! I'm shocked! So just because a man goes into a gay bar now and then he has to be a homosexual? I thought lawyers were more tolerant than that. Evidence denied. Motion to suppress granted.

I liked the movie, even though I am was skeptical going in. Cruise doesn't inspire me to buy a ticket, but he didn't ruin this one. Not a chick flick, certainly, but an intriguing male-female component in the story.
I thought it was a great movie also. It inspired me and got me interested in reading more about the samurai. Got a question though. Did the young emperor in the movie come off a little to micheal jackson to anyone else like he did to me? lol

He could have traded for better. A Spanish burro is still a burro.

Granted.

Then NDD.
Then you reply.
Then rulings by everyone who wants to rule.
Tom Cruise and Cruz are no longer 'together'...

They aren't together, but he left Kidman for her. Now, maybe crack whore looking women are your ("your" meaning anyone but me) style, but not mine. Cruz looked her best in the Coke commercials, but generally I do not find her to be a prototype Latin beauty. Her face structure bothers me. Sofia Viagra is much better looking.
A person's heritage doesn't automatically guarantee that they are more attractive than someone of another heritage.

Just one observation.
That was some lucky Chestnut Cruise was riding.
Somehow that horse survived all those battles :p

As far as no sex goes, I thought "Risky Business" was probably Cruise's high point.

And hers was "To Die For."
I clearly lack taste, Kidman isn't my cup of tea.
But then again neither is Cruz, really.
Must be crazy.

I rented the movie this weekend.
I couldn't help but think this was Hollywood's response to the whole John Walker Lindh thing. Maybe I read too much into stuff.
I was really bothered buy how they make the Samurai out to be so flawlessly noble as a people. There is a reason why non-Samurai disliked them. They were a caste of people privileged by birth. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but there were no "Samurai villages." Less lucky Japanese had to work in order to feed them, so they could pursue their thing. They mine as well do a movie showing some modern GI joining the Fedayeen to fight the "Infidel" in Iraq.
I find it hard to believe the Samurai were all so noble and pure and the anti-samurai adivisors to the Emperor were so manipulative and greedy. The extreme characterizations were like something out of a Disney movie.
This looked like just another Hollywood "Noble ancient culture good, modern Western society bad" Hollywood fare. When this movie first came out, someone on SOCNET said it was like "Dances with Wolves" in Japan. I agree, except the subtle anti "war on terror" message really bothered me more.
But what do I know, I actually enjoyed, "The Postman."
In the cases I've studied, you're absolutely correct- the Samurai did not farm their own food. Nevertheless, some did cultivate fields for Zen pursuits. Furthermore, many samurai were as 'pure' as portrayed in that movie.
On the other hand, many were drunk, abused women, children, and males, and regularly engaged in random acts of extreme violence.
As with all cultures and religions, there are the good, the bad, and the ugly.
That having been said, it is possible that following the Togukawa period and the subsiquent gradual erosion of the priveledge of the Samurai class, Samurai families did move out of their Shoen into secluded areas to start their own villages and thereby avoid the eradication of their culture.
I am by no means an expert on this kind of thing, I'm just basing this off of what reading and tutelage I have recieved on the subject.

Yeah, very SF. This would be like you joining the FARC and becoming a cartel kingpin. ;)
But I did enjoy the movie. LOL :)

I don't know why, but I was thinking I liked "The Postman" too. For some weird reason this thought went through my head this weekend.
Again, I don't know why. (don't even like Costner)
Rented the movie today. Pretty decent flick.
I was surprised as well.

Betray? Maybe I saw a different movie. He didn't betray anyone. He was for hire.
He was contracting out.

I don't know-- Cruz was pretty hot in that movie "Blow." I wouldn't kick her outta bed... though my wife might.
I'm with TR and CG, Kidman over Cruz.
I'll take RL's word on Hollywood sham romances, but I don't see what's in it for Holmes, hitching her wagon to a fading star. I guess according to the NY Post article any pub is better than no pub.
I liked Last Samarai, but with regards to Cruise it was a little too much let the camera linger lovingly over me and my luscious long hair, which is not surprising since he was a producer as well. He was damn good in Collateral though.
