Here's an antenna mast you might want to consider.
AB-1386/U NSN: 5895-01-381-6341 quick-erect antenna that raises to a height of 33 feet, much higher than the obsolete OE-254. Check it out at the website below witn NSNs for other attachments and accessories. It is class 9, non-recoverable item so it can be ordered through your motor pool. However, the FEDLOG says it costs $3998. http://www.armyproperty.com/Equipment-Info/QEAM.htm

A new antenna to put on your mast:
COM201B NSN: 5895-01-498-0332. Class 9, Non recoverable, $2201.82. Attached is a spec-sheet. You can google "COM201B Antenna" for about 31,000 hits.

69harley, were you able to get any results from that field expedient satcom antenna??

Just curious, as we will be teaching/showing it to the 18E's, and would like a little technical data to put out, like direction of radiation, DB gain, feed point impedence, etc. Just looking at it, it's pretty obvious about direction of radiation, and with the two loops, I would ASSUME it would be about 100 ohms, but the DB gain would be nice.

Glebo,

The expediant antenna did 2.6-2.9 db across the entire UHF SATCOM transmit spectrum.

Seems they should check their literature....or has their been a change

5935-01-371-4140 BNC to Red and Black Binding Posts Connector

If anyone has any other cool NSNs to share...Lookup of the above NSN on STAMIS has it still there; our C&E shop has same device but with binding posts+banana jacks on the end.

NSN: 5935-00-410-1399 (Pomona Electronics PN 1296)

[Same company also has a 6-pack kit containing M & F BNC with either straight spring binding posts or banana w/bp, as well as M & F adapter sleeves. 'Bout $56 from Digikey.]

Using banana plug option when pre-packing homegrown wire radiators has attraction to me as something caveman simple in cold wx/gloved hands.

Happy trails.

Well not actually. I know this is an old post, but we are doing some chamber testing now on a new antenna and put some legacy SATCOM antennas in the chamber for reference. Every vehicular antenna had at least 5db of gain, some more. The ground antennas were easily hitting 7db some as high as 14db.

A 2.5 db antenna and 20 watts from a man pack terminal is on the fringes of acceptable link margins.

Does anyone have an NSN for a 5590 male connector that attaches to the end of a cable? I have found them online, for example:

http://www.tacticaleng.com/c25/BA5590-BB-2590-Plug-Male-Connector-p8.html

but, with no NSN, I will have to twist some arms to allow us to purchase them with the GPC card.

I am going to be making a 5590 to USB adapter (actually, quite a few). I know that some are available from TSE Recon and Tactical Engineering, but I see no reason to pay hundreds of dollars for something I can make myself for about $50 in parts.

While I am asking questions, can anyone give me a good NSN for either a 10/3 outdoor rated extension cord, or bulk 10/3 SJ type cable? My research has only turned up 12/3 extension cords. I will admit up front that I don't have a FEDLOG account, and I am still learning the arcane ways of the supply system.

Not found by me on FEDLOG; tried keyword search on nomenclature, mfr's PN, and cage code brings up several of their items as well (from TacEng/SuppyNet) but not this connector. One other alternative is to CALL the supplier directly if you can. FEDLOG ain't perfect and perhaps the vendor has already seen one assigned to it.

Otherwise, you may have to just start arm-twistin' & go GPC after all.

This may help. You will probably have to find your own plug ends.

6150-01-293-0574 Cable Assy, Special Purpose, Electrical. Length: 62"; Terminal Lugs both ends; 3-Conductors (Red, White, Black), Each conductor is 10AWG stranded (37 strands).

Here are some other extension cords I found on FEDLOG

6150-01-503-2029 I/O, HD, Extension Cord, 15 Ft. Long, 1 Outlet, 3-Prong

Thanks for the help. I have to confess that so far I find the "system" for this stuff pretty mind-boggling. The amount of time and effort that must get wasted by soldiers trying to find the correct parts must be unbelievable.

Thanks for the help. I have to confess that so far I find the "system" for this stuff pretty mind-boggling. The amount of time and effort that must get wasted by soldiers trying to find the correct parts must be unbelievable. It is. There are mechanisms to assign an NSN for a previously unlisted piece of COTS gear and the nearest PBO (if having decent attitude) can describe that better than I. That's how some stuff is already "in the system" and some not; it just hasn't gotten there yet. The problem is that the NSN references a product from a specific supplier (or two), and then if you order the NSN, the actual human-thing might've gone out of biz and the NSN is no longer valid, so you wasted time on the supply system running its traps.

You've done your diligence; now go make your case to the card holder to "order my mission-essential stuff." (And remember that 2 is 1 and 1 is none.)

The high power 5590 to USB from TSE will be hard to make yourself. That adapter as designed will charge two iPads at the same time. There is a little bit electronics happening inside it and the USB port to handle the high current is on the pricey side.

The male BA-5590 plug canbe purchased on the open market for $15 each in low quantities directly from the manufacturer. Of which, there are only two actual manufacturers of that connector in the US. Neither TSE or Tactical Engineering are the manufacturer of that connector.

PM me if you cannot find the OEM using google.

The two SATCOM antennas from TSE have recently been asigned NSNs.

Manpack Antenna, TSE-RF-SAT-MP-A12 has been asigned 5996-01-576-0774. This is the quick-draw pistol grip SATCOM and LOS Antenna that includes a holster, magnetic mount and an earth spike (enloue of a tripod). 8db of gain.

5985-01-581-8710 has been asigned the the Handheld Antenna. This is the really small SATCOM antenna that will fit in a standard uniform breast pocket or worn under a sport coat. 5 db of gain.
