Barack Obama has already invited a new wave of Republican criticism that the White House isn’t big enough for his ego with his plans to accept the Democratic nomination Thursday at Invesco Field at Mile High.

The field where the Denver Broncos play and where Obama will address a crowd of more than 70,000 people is now completely covered by a circular seating arrangement. And in the center, where Obama will be standing, is what appears to be a large structure that resembles the ancient Greek temple of the goddess Athena. Or maybe just the U.S. Capitol.

Obama’s team says the event, which will require the apparatus of the Democratic National Convention to move from the Denver Pepsi Center, is meant to open the doors of the otherwise exclusive convention to the public.

But the grandiose set-up fueled criticism from John McCain’s campaign that Obama is an inflated celebrity.

The campaign sent around a snarky memo Wednesday advising the press of proper attire at “The Temple of Obama,” or “The Barackopolis.”

The memo recommended a variety of togas, urging reporters to “observe a level of decency and decorum demanded by the import of the moment of the presence of The One.”

McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds told FOXNews.com the arena is “stagecraft” intended to highlight his persona.

“It’s an interesting choice — certainly not the type of town-hall meeting John McCain has participated in across the country. I wouldn’t see that fitting with our campaign, but then again our candidate doesn’t enjoy the spotlight of fame quite like Obama,” he said.

Obama strategist David Axelrod said he doesn’t think the taunt “warrants a response.” But he gave one anyway.

“I know that Senator McCain and his people are shooting barbs on the opulence of our convention from the mountaintop in Sedona from the McCain estate,” he said.

Obama’s acceptance speech will be held on the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. The campaign initially kept secret its plans to hold the address down the street at Invesco.

“As a visual it’ll be tremendous,” said Democratic strategist Bob Beckel. “But the problem is that that visual has been a little bit of a negative for him over the last few months.”

Politico.com’s Mike Allen told FOX News that the Obama camp was having reservations about the branding that could come from using Invesco, but was going ahead with its plan anyway.

“It’s hard because of those very clever ads by John McCain which turned the likability factor, which normally elects a president, back on Senator Obama,” Allen said. “He wants to be someone who can lead the country and can relate to people.”

Obama aide Dan Pfeiffer said “it is not true” that the campaign had any doubts about the Invesco event.

And Beckel said he’s sure the Obama campaign thought through all the visuals.

“If it did (have any doubts), those Greek columns would’ve been down,” he said, adding he’s not going to bet against Obama in a speech.

The McCain campaign first seized on the ‘celebrity’ label after Obama delivered a speech to 200,000 onlookers in Berlin during his trip abroad to Europe and the Middle East. Though Obama enjoyed a bump in the polls following his trip, McCain’s ads on Obama’s celebrity status accompanied somewhat of a recovery for him in the polls.

The McCain campaign has recently tried to exploit tensions between Hillary Clinton’s supporters and Obama in the run-up to the Democratic convention, but with Obama’s speech Thursday, it will no doubt return to its previous theme.

Obama adviser Anita Dunn said on a conference call Tuesday that the Thursday address will be a “very non-traditional night” for both the Democratic and upcoming Republican convention.

“It marks the Obama campaign and the Democratic Party’s belief that this does need to be a process that’s opened up to people again, that people from every walk of life, from every part of this country need to be invited to participate in their political process again, that we need to open the doors up and give them the opportunity to come in and be part of the change,” she said, referring to the massive audience that will be on hand.

“And I think that it will be a striking contrast between the final night of our convention … and John McCain’s closing night, which will be in front of the same people who probably do believe we’ve had great economic progress over the past eight years,” she said.

First his "Kennedy" trip to Berlin and now his recreation of King's speech. His use of iconography hasn't been seen to this degree in politics since May 7th 1945. To me it is a sign of political weakness. If your message is so strong than why resort to the cheap parlor tricks? The good thing is that it isn't working. That is one of the reasons why McCain's attacks on Obama celebrity have been so damning. He has no message to fall back on to counter those claims.

On a more serious note I wonder if this is what the people of Germany felt like back in 1932. Facing uncertain times and disillusionment with the current government a grossly inexperienced Adolph Hitler sold his country on the idea that only he represented the change necessary to solves Germany's problems. I am not saying Obama is Hitler but I feel very uncomfortable with a political novice being swept into national office on a wave of propaganda. It has gone well past the point of rationality. Dark days lie ahead if McCain can't pull this one out.

Your marketing plan has to be directed at your target audience, and what they might believe.

The fact that it appears to be ludicrous and patently pandering to the other 49% of the electorate is irrelevant.

Obama and his people gamed a defective Dim primary system largely by grabbing the caucuses with a relatively small number of radical voters, focused in the correct precincts to give him the wins only where he needed them to garner the delegates. Hillary considered her candidacy inevitable, and focused on the general election too early, taking her eye off the primary and Obama till it was too late and the momentum had shifted. She went for the popular vote while Obama only went for the votes he needed.

He knows that he can collect all of the electoral votes for a given state with a majority of one. He will aim for 271 electoral votes as his strategy, anything more is overkill. The problem with that plan is that most of the swing states are too close to call, and McCain has an advantage in the majority of them.

Obama is not trying to win over Republicans who see through his little charade. He is pandering to his base and any undecideds sufficiently gullible to buy into his little Leni Riefenstahl moment.

While I am generally loathe to quote movies I am reminded of the scene in the last Star Wars movies where the Emperor seized control of the government to the adulation of his peers. One of the characters (I can't remember) says "so this is how liberty dies... to the thunderous sound of applause".

We stand on the precipice of electing the single least experienced candidate in the 230+ years of this republic, based largely on style. To make matters worse it looks like his party might end up with enough seats in Congress to do as they please. Even if an Obama Presidency lasts four years there is the potential that he and his merry band of idiots could do enough damage to last several decades. We are indeed living in troubled times.

Congress already does at it pleases...polls show how happy folks are about this congress....big change eh BHO :mad:

Idiocy -- Excellent word, it sums up his entire campaign. The man has done nothing that I have read that even remotely qualifies him to be president. This whole charade would be funny but for the fact that there are a lot of young gullible voters out there that does not have a clue what this will do to our country if he is elected. Plus you have the idiots that will vote for him just because of his race and that he represents ‘change’ although I’ve yet to hear what exactly he plans on changing.

Ive been watching the DNC just to get my blood boiling, Pelosi is an idiot btw. It will be interesting to see how Obama does. I really dont understand all the hype behind him. Im thinking it has to do with how our society is fascinated by celebrities, and the Obama campaign has given him that persona. Theyre whole plan is just like what TR said, just get enough to win. It would suck if he wins, but good he if does so we can see what the horrible job he will do and maybe people will open up their eyes, but I doubt it since no one has been blaming the Democratic Congress and all the faults they have done the past two years.

While Pelosi is far from my favorite person, at LEAST she did not use her position as Speaker of the House to further the agenda of nutballs like Kucinich et al who wanted to impeach President Bush AND VP Cheney - and tied the country into knots.
