I am about to turn 40, and I am considering a number of celebration options. One is to have a party (to which some of you might be invited), but I am thinking about doing some kind of trip with Catwoman instead. High on the list is a Kentucky trip to visit distilleries. I need guidance on what to do. I always thought this should be timed to coincide with the Derby, but my birthday is at the end of October. I like Blanton's a lot and saw nothing about tours on their web site. I can pay to play. ;)
Please tell me what you know about the options I should consider.

I'm a short-time resident of KY - in my opinion, the scenery alone in KY, especially around the bourbon distilleries is enough to make a trip worthwhile - you could probably spend a good 2-3 days exploring those, staying around Lexington. Visually, it's a really relaxing gorgeous place to travel through.
Louisville has a some fine restaurants, plus the Slugger factory for baseball interests.
There's a huge underground cavern site called Mammoth Cave, not sure what it's like but it gets a lot of tourist action. The Patton Museum is around there, too.
These are all within a +/- 1.5 hour drive of each other. :)

There's also the National Corvette Museum and the GM Corvette Assembly Plant down in Bowling Green. Both are right off I-65 exit 28.

Blantons is part of the Buffalo Trace company. Go to the thread I did on the Bourbon Trail and you can get the links to it. As part of the tour you get to see them hand bottle Blantons Single barrel line. October is a great time to be in the bluegrass state. I can give you more info when I get some time on this TDY.

If you come to Kentucky. I grew up in Bardstown and now live in Louisville. Bardstown is where most of the Distillery's are located or near.
If you go to Bardstown, they have a great Civil War Museum and an old village circa late 1700 and early 1800 period. (Many of the buildings are original, but refurbished).
Of course, as mentioned in a previous response, Louisville has the Slugger museum and others.
If you come, send me an e-mail or post here. I will even do an itinerary based on your schedule and research events to match your interest.
Fall time of the year is beautiful here with the leaves changing colors.
Don't forget that Ft. Campbell sits astride the state line in the south. If you wanted a side trip to the Fort there are a number of things to do, beginning with the best steak house in the world (Charlies Steak House, Oak Grove, KY).
Clarksville has a winery, brew pub, skydiving operation, shops full of SF goodies (mostly 5th Group), etc.
The roads in this area are excellent.

If you like Bluegrass Music, the international musuem is located in Owensboro, Ky. Right on the Ohio River. About 1 1/2 hours from Louisville and Fort Campbell. Here is the website.

I just heard a blurb on Fox 45 news here in MD about Louisville being the home of the "second best bathroom" in the USA. Apparently it's a bit of a tourist attraction. It had a large waterfall cascading down the shower wall. Pretty cool. I couldn't find a link on their website, but I'm still lookin'.....

and WOW! That hotel alone may be the straw that sends me to KY for a vacation (aside from the bullets 'n bourbon). :D
If you come to the machine gun shoot at Knob Creek, let me know. One of my Soldiers works there and is part of the family that runs it. That's where we end up doing most of our Troop's weapons training (at least the fun stuff). The October shoot will be big since the April shoot got cancelled due to the flood.
Oh, yea, I can get you on a tank too. :D

If your interested in vehicles and horsepower, go to the Holly Manufacturing Plant in Bowling Green. My uncle rebuilds classic cars and says it is a must see.
