I found a thread in MP.net suggesting an American was captured in Ossetia.

...here is a translation:

A group of Georgian explosives experts were captured in South Ossetia, among them is an American citizen, an African-American. This is reported by "Radio Ossetia".

The group was detained in the area around the village of Zar, which is located on the "road of life" - the Zarskaya road.

It is assumed that the American citizen is one of the NATO instructors. At the moment, he was transferred to Vladikavkaz to resolve the circumstances around his presence on the territory of the Republic of South Ossetia.

As mentioned by Rosbalt news service (http://www.rosbalt.ru/), the Plenipotentiary Representitive to the Russian Federation Dmitriy Medoyev already reported that several dark-skinned bodies were found among the corpses in Tskhinvali, having fought on the side of Georgia.

Thanks for the article. I found the following to be interesting:

While this is a conflict between Russia and Georgia, the international overtones are obvious. Despite publicity stunts aimed at making the Russian military appear modern and lethal, the majority of Russia's equipment is slowly deteriorating, and its ranks are filled with inexperienced conscripts. As the Russian leadership consolidates its political power, most of the countries formerly within its orbit have either joined, or aspire to join, NATO. Russia's protests at Kosovo's declaration of independence were ignored, and the Russian opposition to America's ballistic missile defense system has been politely brushed aside - not to mention the diplomatic and economic capital the Russians have expended on supporting Iran's nuclear program. While the current conflict is specifically about South Ossetia, the Kremlin likely feels no pain over the diplomatic fallout of punishing Georgia for its perceived insolence.

The Cold War may be over, but Russia remains a significant monkey on the collective back of the West - as the West's Georgian allies are learning

Seems to me that Russia is a tad upset at being ignored for so long that they want some kind of leverage to get what they want. They support Iran, do not want breakway republics to join NATO, did not want independence for Kosovo, and now they have instigated Georgia into a fight (of course Georgia took the bait.)

I get the feeling Russia does not care what anyone thinks right now since they feel they've been ignored. Interesting that Israel stopped providing drones to Georgia because of the need to have Russia on board regarding Iran. Do we trust Russia to help deal with Iran?
