Well, I heard her new version this weekend for the first time, including the new verse:

Fighting soldiers from the sky
Fearless men who jump and die
Men who mean just what they say
The brave men of the Green Beret

Is this for real? Has anyone else heard this yet? Who would produce this without checking with the community? Certainly record execs cannot be so out of touch.

I must be missing something contextual here, because I believe the above posted "new" verse isn't new at all--its the first verse of the song as written in '66. Who is "she", by the way?

 I am just as confused. I thought those were the correct words.
I believe her is Dolly Parton. Her song might curl some toes but I think anytime an artist like Dolly brings attention to the "Green Beret" it is a good thing. You guys won't bring attention upon yourselves so why not the Dolly Partons of the world?

My two cents.

The original post was edited. The SMU's and SOCOM can write their own song. I suspect it was just anther attempt to muddle the lines between Special Forces and special ops…The text extra verse pissed me off as much as the Balti-morons do by screaming "O" during the National Anthem.

Razor, CoLawman - you guys are late to the party.

Some sly work was done here overnight. I suspect elves were at work.:D

That is correct, I removed the bullshit from the orginal post.

I left the thread as a reminder, don't re-write Barry's song. IMO Dolly Parton's version of the song is extremely disrespectful.

whew!!! Thought that I've lost my mind there for a minute.

Glad you came along and explained it TS. I've heard this song for some good things and some bad things more times than I can remember for the last 2 years.

Standing in formation, you have little else to do but hold still and hold on to those words. ;)

Agreed, it is an original, it's a classic, and it needs to remain untouched. Make your own damn song if you want one so bad.

Then I won't send the XXX version we enjoyed so much that was sung by Tony Aguilar in the piano bar of the Balcony club in Bangkok! :p

It is a step past disrespectful when the song has the "Marines lead the way".

...the song has the "Marines lead the way".

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!!! I just became an ex-Dolly fan. Maggie must be rolling over in her grave and sharpening her knife in preparation for meeting Dolly again in the future; that's a fight I'd like to witness...and I think the LTC would win that one.

I, too, was late to the party. My question may be super secret, but I gotta ask:
SFOD-D means gotta be SF first, yes?

NO!

Haney, Greer, and several of the other "prominent" former members were never SF.

SFOD-D takes applicants from all walks of Army life. Whether they make it through the selection process or not is another story entirely.
