Found this on Crossfit's website today, on Friday's workout post:

"Another item I want to touch on pertains to a cover story in a recent
Navy Times on Crossfit, "the new fitness craze." This is a commercial
off the shelf (COTS) program and is not tailored to an individual.
Several SMEs in the sports medicine field (military & civilian) have
addressed a concern that the program has the potential for causing an
increased incidence of musculoskeletal injuries and even muscle
breakdown (rhabdomyoloysis) and therefore is not supported by CPPD.
Granted, anyone can develop a program that's very intense but there's a
safer way of doing this for our Sailors. Additionally, any program that
names exercises after women is contrary to our Core Values."

- Captain Jon Picker, USN, Commanding Officer, Center for Personal and Professional Development, in the July issue of ENCOMPASS.

Crossfit included his email address. Wonder how many emails he got that day! I went to the Encompass website but couldn't figure out how to read more than the first page of the Encompass issue for July. Anyone know how to access the rest of Encompass? And, any Navy guys want to explain what he's talking about?

I don't know, sounds like a lot of bull to me...Crossfit is nothing more than a tool that can be used to get into better shape...how you use that tool is up to you. From my 13 years AD experience in the Navy, we (The Navy) could use a lot more PT. I'm currently in the reserves, and to be honest, most of the people that I drill with could use more PT. As far as naming exercises after women, in the past haven't womens names been used for a lot of differing things in the military? (soldiers weapons, names of airplanes, ect...) I don't see any rant about that. I think it's harmless, but that's just my opinion.:lifter
