I just found this From Fox news....It seems now there are other things that we aren't allowed to say...
Texas County Official Sees Race in Term 'Black Hole'
Thursday, July 10, 2008
Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price
DALLAS — What do "black hole," "angel food cake," and "devil's food cake" have in common?
They're all racist terms, says a Dallas County, Texas, official.
A county commissioners' meeting this week over traffic tickets turned into a tense discussion over race when one commissioner said the county's collections office was like a certain astronomical phenomenon.
"It sounds like Central Collections has become a black hole," Commissioner Kenneth Mayfield, who is white, said during the Monday meeting.
One black official demanded an apology, and Commissioner John Wiley Price, who also is black, said that type of language is unacceptable.
At the meeting, Mayfield said he intended his comments to be taken in the context of the scientific meaning, and became upset that he was being misunderstood.
In astronomy, the term black hole refers to a star that has collapsed upon itself, creating something so dense and small that it does not have any physical properties besides a gravitational force so great that even light cannot escape its pull.
Later, Price told MyFOXdfw.com that he believed it and other terms were racist.
"So if it's 'angel food cake,' it's white. If it's 'devil's food cake,' it's black. If you're the 'black sheep of the family,' then you gotta be bad, you know. 'White sheep,' you're okay. You know?" Price said.
Price said people should watch their words when it comes to stereotypes.
"I think people should always be careful. You know, I'm okay if I'm 'bartering' with you. ... But if I try to 'Jew you down,' Oooooh. Is that racist? I thought it meant the same thing? No, maybe it doesn't."
The world-renowned physicist Stephen Hawking might have a solution to the problem over perception of the astronomical term. He refers to the phenomenon as "a singularity."

This ranks right up there with the guy fired for using the word "niggardly" in the proper context.
Your ignorance and chip on your shoulder does not make me guilty of offering actual offenses.
This is not racism (or at least not white racism), it is ignorance, and by people in high positions.

It is said that the English language is very difficult to master. That having been said, it just seems to become harder every day. Harder still with constantly shifting "nuances", IMHO.

So I guess using the phrase, "having a black mark on your record", will now also be considered racist?
When will this maddness ever end?
When will this maddness ever end?
When we are all under sharia law?

Thank you Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price, for raising the bar on human stupidity.

Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe.

Something tells me Commissioner Price uses the phrase "jew you down" on a regular basis...

TS,Sir,
Priceless!!!:lifter

If any of you have read Mr. Hawking’s books I’m sure you know why the term is Singularity rather then black hole. Course that is also kind of OT so nvm, I once read a letter to the editor in one of our local papers that was along the lines of this. It mainly consisted of someone saying the term White-hot was rascist since that the “hottest” color. Needless to say I think the paper ran the letter just because of how absurd it was.

Yes I have read Professor Hawkings book, and you should do more reading yourself.
You, like Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price are dead wrong.
But don't believe me, you could just go to Professor Hawking's website and have a look for yourself. Let me know if you need some help understanding the Professors book.

black hole: A region of space-time from which nothing, not even light, can escape, because gravity is so strong.

Singularity: A point in space time at which the space time curvature becomes infinite.

Singularity theorem: A theorem that shows that a singularity must exist under certain circumstances - in particular, that the universe must have started with a singularity.

My understanding is that there is believed to be a singularity at the center of a black hole but they are not interchangeable terms.
This whole thing reminds me of when I was going through SUT and there was a black guy on my team. He had a gift for finding "racially offensive" words in the English language. I think that he picked up on the Angel's food/Devil's food thing back then also. The difference was that he was joking. I suspect that if he has seen this, he is having a good laugh.

You know, I never thought to go looking for that site, I like the design a lot. My post wasn’t supposed to sound as condescending as it did, I suppose I should start using emoticons more, right up there with the <sar></sar> tags as needed things for involved text conversation. Also, after going back and reading the OP, I seem to have glossed over the word “astronomical”, hence the idea that “singularity” would have been a better description of the term used, my bad.
My understanding is that there is believed to be a singularity at the center of a black hole but they are not interchangeable terms.
Thats my impression as well.
My understanding is that there is believed to be a singularity at the center of a black hole but they are not interchangeable terms.
They are not interchangeable, but they are most definitely related concepts. The curvature of space time and incomprehensible gravitational pull that we refer to as a "black hole" are the products of the formation of a singularity, so it isn't like anyone was grouping completely unrelated topics. Watch the animated illustrations provided in TS's links..... they are the exact same process. The "black hole effect" is merely a component of the birth of the singularity.
I actually had physics professors who would refer to black holes as "evidence of a singularity..." I never saw it was anything to get wound up about, apparently neither did they.
And here I thought those physics classes would never come in handy.....:D
Regardless, it certainly isn't a term born out of racism, and whoever claims it is is a knucklehead.
If we're to be racially correct,
-devil's food cake would be red
-also note: devil's food cake is brown - if you're eating black cake, you better check the ingredients.
So I guess using the phrase, "having a black mark on your record", will now also be considered racist?
When will this maddness ever end?
Depending on who you are and how you read this statement, it could be considered an act of agression.
 Amazing, the depths of human stupidity, and the lengths some will go to, looking to be offended. I am offended at their offendedness. If more people just kept to themselves, and gave people like that the one finger peace sign...
When did the US turn into FRANCE?

I'm offended (disgusted & insulted)that Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price and I are from the same gene pool.
Guys,
John Wiley Price is one of several members of the Dallas City Council--one of the most racially divisive and least effectice councils you could ever imagine--who make a living keeping things stirred up by publicly emulating the likes of the Al Sharptons of this world. JWP would have made a great RREO officer.

What about "being in the black", as meaning you are making a profit? Is that not racist because it isn't bad? Or, if you think capitalism is evil, maybe being in the black IS racist- because it has an evil connotation, as in: "that evil global corporation that sucks the blood out of poor workers everywhere was reported by CNBC to be "in the black" again. I'm offended that I'm associated with an evil capitalist corporation that steals money from developing nations." Since many minority special interest groups seem to me to be also anti-capitalist, that might make sense.
Never Underestimate the Power of Stupid People....
And of course, being in the "red" would insult the commies or indians. Hence all the grief about the professional sports teams with indian names..
The crazy senator McCarthy who led the witch hunts in the 50's must be turning over in his grave....

I lived in the North Texas area for over 20 years. Price is an idiot and racist. He is just one of the many problems the city of Dallas has.
Oh for fucks sake... and people wonder why I am becoming more antisocial

While driving back from the Kansas City area last week, and taking the "scenic route" from Colo Springs to Cortez, on through the 4 Corners area to the Navajo Nation before hitting 89 into Flagstaff, I passed Red Mountain HS in Teec Nos Pos, Az (on the Navajo Nation - for Navajo students) and saw the big sign indicating the school's mascot was the "Redskins". Funny, the students hadn't burned down the school and there was no crowd of protestors. I don't think a lot of true Native Americans get all exorcised about these mascots, unless the "cartoon character" is "offensive"!

Red Mesa, AZ.
The Diné tend not to waste effort demonstrating how offended they are to outsiders.
Most have an excellent sense of humor.
Discussions they have on such issues are in usually in their own language.
("Navajo" is a name given to them by outsiders, they refer to themselves as "Diné")
The commonly used term for "reservation" roughly translates to "prison".

I love Jimmy Kimmel's take on being censored. You can take almost anything and twist it to something dark but it is sure funny to watch!

This moron would get offended at Subway restaurant when they ask him if he wants white or wheat bread. People like him view everything as a racist remark. He has no place in a leadership position with an uneducated, narrow minded and bigoted point of view.

If you think he's stupid just take a trip to the polls in Dallas. The electorate is right there with him. This kind of behavior caters to a lot of people.
