Wasn't sure where to post this (Medical or Gear) but thought others would find this helpful. I found that Nalgene bottles contained a plastic polycarbonate with a chemical called Bisphenol A (BPA) while researching baby bottles. Nalgene is phasing these types of bottles out with a new type.

There is some controversy regarding the health effects as with any product and studies that were funded with corporate money. Here is some data on the health issues:

This phase out is actually pretty wide spread in the industry right now. Camelbak and other companies have also redone their bottles.

I think our shop in town has switched out all of our bottles right now, and we're actually allowing customers to trade in previously bought bottles with our store logo printed on them. Other outdoor stores should be following suit.

Agreed though about the questionable medical validity about BPA. I've been drinking from these bottles, and handing them out to trip participants, for years and seen nothing untoward. Maybe it will come in time, but I wouldn't just go tossing out all of your current bottles just to buy new ones.

Of course my cynical side is pretty confident we will all die of one cancer or another one day...
