She's been hyped so much.
It was bound to happen.

Actually, she won it on a gas call by her crew chief. Went from back around 9th with only a few laps left to 1st when almost everyone else stopped for a splash and go.
Not saying she isn't a good driver, or that a win isn't a win.
Congratulations.

This adds "fuel" to the fire of other drivers complaining that because of her weight she gets better mileage....

Good job Danica!
same race track for everyone...
she won.

Yep.
It was bound to happen.
Not necessarily. However, she won because she is really a good driver and has a good team supporting her.

Danica has been working her way to the front for a few years now. She has led laps at Indy and has had the bit in her teeth for some time. Danica has been holding her own , and was as able to win as well as any driver out there. Danica has not backed down on the track or in any verbal assults. She is tough and I hope has more wins in her future. She is on a winning team with Michael Andretti.

In the interest of playing Devil's Advocate, since she weighs about 100 lbs to 110 lbs (from what I've read), while the average male driver weighs probably at least 150 lbs to 170 lbs, could her weight advantage be considered an unfair competitive advantage?:munchin
c'mon Broadsword... You want race car drivers to look like horse Jockeys???
If weight was such a big deal in racing, she'd have won more races and Slim-Fast would have it's own NASCAR (and the Miller Lite or Budweiser car would finish last more often... The KFC Car wouldn't even qualify)
I listened to a great interview with her on NPR (national pinko radio). They asked her about why, as a race car driver, she chose to pose for men's mags etc. She said that she was a woman AND a driver and that she does whatever she wants and is setting herself up for life after racing.
Listen to it here: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=89913870
No digs about listening to NPR please... I live in Vermont and have to blend-in IOT survive the hippie-uprising... (but seriously, ever lived in a state with 3 decent radio stations?)

If this was true you would have Nascar Drivers vomiting up their last meal right for the green Flag:D

If weight and hype won races, you would see more bucks spent on PR and diets, and less on R&D.

Same could be said of Jockies, they are small men......so why not recruit from that pool of genetic specimens. :munchin
There is no competetive advantage IMHO if you weigh 100 to 110 pounds. I understand the mileage factor that is brought up. She still has to keep that friggin rocket with wheels on the track at 200+MPH, utilize her poor, weak female muscles to steer it ;) and compete against a pool of other more experienced drivers.
I could get on the track and putt around and the whole field could have a wreck, and it would be just a matter of time for me to win. I'm sorry I play semantics. :D
Petite or not, the woman has skill. I give it to the pit crew, and race manager for seeing the benefit of a driver that is petite, and has skill.
I have mild amblyopia (lazy eye or cockeyed if you so please), do I hold an advantage transitioning from the right to the left since my left eye is already prepositioned? I could name any factor that would give one person an advantage over another.
A win is a win to me.

True, good points, I was actually defending her over at another car forum, but a couple of the guys jumped on me and said she has an unfair advantage and that she can make up for her lack of strength by working out more, but they (the guys) can't lose down to her weight, so I figured I'd throw that stuff out to see what ya'll thought.
Definitely not saying she doesn't have skill to race at that level.
As far as weight, or lack there of, on the part of a driver, being an advantage, well let's look at the "Flying Scot".....Sir Jackie Stewart.
Small in size, and "built like a jockey", he won race after race after race in his prime.
As TR said above, no one is stopping the other drivers from loosing a few and coming down to Danica's weight. ;)

Well that's the thing though, CAN they get to her weight? I think she only weighs about 100 to 110 lbs...?

AUTOWEEK 5MAY08 pg 53 reports:
" Heilo Castroneves said that Danica Patrick won IndyCar's Japan race "fair and square."" It is reported by Penske Racing president Tim Cindric that no fuel came out of the fuel hose when it was disconnected from the 22 gal fuel cell. Cindric told Castroneves to begin conserving fuel as soon as the final start began, but there was miscommunication, and he (Castroneves) didn't produce the mileage that Patrick did. She drove past him with three laps to go for her first series win". Patrick is #5 in points race behind Castroneves, Dixon, Wheldon, and Kanaan after the Japan victory. Next Indy Car race is listed as the Indy 500 on 25MAY08, 1200 EDT on ABC.
While not reported in this issue, Danica was DNIF when right rear lugs sheared on track in last weeks race.
Also reported in the same AUTOWEEK issue: "Ashley Force is the first female Funny Car winner in NHRA history after beating her famous father, John Force, in an emotional final at Atlanta Dragway". "Ashley ran 4.837 sec @ 320.36 mph in the final." Fast gal!

She was running strong at Indy today but got hosed when a jackass tried to jump out of his pit box without checking clear and took her out.
I liked it when she got out of her wrecked car and started stalking the idiot to "chat" with him.
Security cut her off, but I would have loved to have seen an old fashioned throw-down.
She is a talented driver.

Danica looked for all the world to be doing a "high noon" walk down ala Gary Cooper/ John Wayne; granted a bit shorter. Roger Penske told his errant driver to "put your visor down"; probably did not want to have to finance a rhinoplasty for Ryan Brisco.
Of the three female drivers, none finished. Sarah Fisher was the saddest to see. Danica just pushed on despite problems with the car, her wreck just flat pissed me off.
Given all the cautions, not one of the better Indys.

Not only a weak Indy, but some of the worst reporting and commentary I have ever heard. They need to check in with Fox and get Darryl and the rest of their crew to cover it.
I much preferred Danica's performance to Sarah's weepiness. The walk down pit road to challenge Brisco was a classic. That is one of the few times that she would have benefitted from being a man and 100 pounds heavier. Absolutely the best moment of the race. Reminded me of Cale in his salad days.

Yep! 235 mph side-by-side in an open-wheeled car and no spotters (back in the day) was a Brieeze. :D

You are right, awful coverage of a sad open wheel racing event. I'd like to think the Speed Channel would have done a much better job. I would have loved to have heard Darrly and the boys take on this disaster. Darryl just has the greatest insight of any racing reporter I've heard.
When I was in Dover,DE, my neighbor was a print racing sports reporter fot Autoweek. He covered all the NASCAR races. His favorite was always Darryl because of his candor and insight.
My head and heart were calling for Tony Kannan to win @ Indy. Second choice was Danica. Marco has yet to win my heart. I have spent some time with Mario, he is a national treasure and a pleasure to be with. Michael I've only met once .
Danica has the rest of the season. Indy was "just a race" this year and was not a good one for anyone. I think Danicas' star is still rising.

No sir, I look for the qualities of honesty and good sprtsmanship, not SHOWMANSHIP. If a athlete is good, they are good because they made themselves that way, not because they are good looking, do drugs, sell products or make a ton of cash...........
Unfortunately, damn near all of them suck if you go by those standards. I do not vote for the athlete these days, I vote for the team.............
Adrian Sutil cries and Danica Patrick goes looking to kick butt. How cool is that! :lifter
Patrick
I watched the race and could not believe the bad luck, poor driving by the ass clown that hit her. Later on he admits that he did nothing wrong. On Friday she was being interviewed by Brian Williams and came across as extremely bright and intelligent. She's got the whole package, drives a fast car, is hot looking and has a active working brain.

Well sure, I don't mean you go solely by looks on a athlete or cash or whatnot, but if there's a guy who is a good athlete, but also is good-looking, I would imagine that is a definite plus for a female viewer.
IMO, nothing wrong with liking an athlete because they are physically-pleasing to look at, as long as that isn't the sole reason you admire them.
