It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of Mr. Robin Moore (October 31, 1925 – February 21 2008. Robin passed away in Hopkinsville this evening after a long fought battle with an illness that had kept him confined to bed.
Those of us in the community owe a lot to Robin, author of “The Green Berets” which went on to become the classic movie starring John Wayne and gave us our world famous nickname.
Robin also authored several other books including “The French Connection.”
The saying “I’ll make you famous” truly applies to Robin’s work with Special Forces over the years. At the 2007 5th Special Forces Group Reunion Banquet Col. Chris Conner confirmed Robin Moore as a life long member of 5th group. At the same banquet he was made a Kentucky Colonel.
I had the opportunity to meet Robin for the first time in 1989, but it wasn’t until he provided me some tips and insight into the writing of my book in 2004, did I come to know the man.
He was very humble and greatful to the men of Special Forces. He did so much for all of us as a whole yet he still continued to personally help any one of us with any endeavor.
Funeral details will be forthcoming, I’m sure the hundreds, if not thousands of Special Forces Soldiers “Green Berets” that have served over the years and have come to know Robin will do their best to attend his memorial/funeral.
Our deepest sympathy and prayers go out to his wife Helen who has been by his side every step of the way as he battled his illness.
