Multiple Victims In N. Illinois Univ. Shooting
LIVE CBS 2 Special Report: NIU Shooting
DE KALB, Ill (CBS) ― Several people have been shot on the Northern Illinois University campus. The suspect killed himself and officials say the danger has passed.

Officials confirmed that several people were shot at Cole Hall, a large lecture hall on campus, shortly after 3 p.m. and the campus was immediately placed on lockdown.

Kishwaukee Hospital reported that up to 15 people were being brought to the hospital and that three to four of those victims had suffered head wounds.

Student journalists at the school's Northern Television Center reported that there were 18 victims, two of them fatalities, including the gunman.

Lt. Gary Spangler of the DeKalb Police Department told the school newspaper, the Northern Star, that "The gunman is deceased," adding that the "majority of the incident happened in Cole Hall."

Officials said the immediate danger has passed.

A viewer who e-mailed CBS 2 said that her brother was in the lecture hall where the shooting happened. "He says that the gunmen was a white male dressed in all black. He kicked the door in and opened fire. My brother dove under the desk, and popped his head up to see the gunmen was reloading. He grabbed his girlfriend's hand and ran to the library where they been in lockdown since."

The campus will be closed on Friday.

"Police are trying to get everyone off campus,'' said student David Healy, who was near Cole Hall when the shooting happened. "At least five people have been pulled out on stretchers."

An alert on the university's website confirmed "several" people were taken away in ambulances.

I would prefer that we stop recognizing these assholes (which gives them the attention they crave), and ignore them and their demise.

Till one tries it around an armed citizen, and gets what he really deserves.

But, the administators of these institutions of higher learning can proudly announce to the media, that their schools are "Gun Free Zones".

I wonder how many misfits would try this crap if they knew that the student body were packing?

I think permits are a better solution than bans.

Unfortunately Illinois is a "gun free zone" more or less. It is one of only 2 states that does NOT issue any kind of concealed carry, and if the people up in Chicago had their way, the 2nd amendment would not apply to any one in Illinois. This will only make things worse for the people who live in that state and wish to defend themselves. Some day there will only be wolves and sheep in Illinois because all of the sheep dogs will be arrested, forced out, or both. Oh well, you get what you pay for Chicago.

I agree with Ted Nugent, that these areas should have new signage.................... "VICTIM ZONE"!!!

Unfortunately Illinois is a "gun free zone" more or less. It is one of only 2 states that does NOT issue any kind of concealed carry,

Ohio used to be the other one. At least when I lived there years back. That's one of the reasons I left. No CCP for its law abiding citizens. And god forbid you shoot someone breaking into your home.

When I lived in Alabama (93-96) there was an incident in my town that made the news as a crackhead tried to hold up a small local BP station that happened to be frequented by many farmers getting their morning coffee and swapping stories every morning. This punk pulls out a pistol, points it at the cashier, and as he reaches over the counter at her one old timer plants a couple rounds in the punks head and torso. End of story.

Then Sheriff Glasgow, who is still close friends with my father, a fixed wing and helicopter mechanic who worked on the county's small fleet, said right away it was a righteous shoot. I couldn't have agreed more. That gave creedence to my now ex-wife as to why I carry all the time, even in church.

A friend of mine emailed me this morning to say that her brother was in that classroom and had been hit. Thankfully he is alive. He took 5 pellets in the leg and 3 in the hand.

I work for a university, I have heard the VP of Virginia Tech speak in person on her experience there, and I know former administrators from NIU. The higher ed community is blind to the realties of life and backward thinking about campus safety. Gun free zone means a safe zone for criminals and the disturbed to do harm. Sadly, NIU won't be the last.

The advice given students at my university is to carry a cell phone, hide, and bar the doors. Meanwhile if a licensed to concealed carry student, faculty, or staff is brings a gun to campus they will be expelled or fired.

Finally, I am reminded as I write this that every day men and women volunteer to step into harms way on my behalf. To those men and women, you have my sincere admiration and gratitude.

Thanks,

Mark

TR Sir, pardon me for dropping my 0.02. Finally read about it on the paper today. The norm stuff, people yelled "run! he's reloading." I'm no hero, but I do move towards the sound of gun fire, and may I live the rest of my life in shame if I were ever not stand up to the task
