View Full Version : Help identifying weapon please
A good friend of mine posted this photo on his blog journaling his fight against cancer. The joke being that his new chemo device (the black bag) facilitates his concealed carry permit. Anyway the game is that we (the friends and family who read the blog) have to now identify the weapon.
Help?
And FWIW he's a former Ranger, but don't hold it against him - it's all the same community right?

Got a better (bigger) picture?
From the "small" pic it looks like some sort of Makarov.

It could also be the chinese version Takarov. I tried with Adobe photoshop CS2 to enlarge and the picture is to grainy.

I thought Takarov until I looked closely at the trigger...;)
I don't have a better picture, he posted them small on his blog. I'll go with what you suggested. He'll be impressed that I have any kind of idea at all. :D When he coughs up the answer, I'll let you know.

My first inclination was Makarov too. No, I didn't cheat and look at the other guy's answers.
You guys are smart. I knew I'd get the right answer from you!!
Here's the email I got back from him. It's kind of a cool story so I figure I'll just copy/paste the whole thing.
Congratulations, Shar,
You are the first person to try to identify the weapon AND the first person to get it right.
Any hints from anyone? [I'll confess]
The pistol was given to me by the Dad of one of Matt's companions in St. Petersburg [his son served an LDS mission there, my friend is not LDS however]. He was/is a CEO for a company in Texas that imports Makarov 9mm, standard issue KGB. Pronounced Ma KAHR off.
Said I deserved one because of all my time on Freedom's Frontier, winning the Cold War. I sent him back a hari kiki knife my dad picked up from the docks in Japan, where he also received a samurai sword and a 38 cal Jap Luger.
Mak shoots well, but requires special ammo, not just standard 9 mm. If you need details, let me know. [I can't think of anything else I'd need to know, but if anyone else is curious, I'll pass it on.]

I sleep with a Hungarian Makarov 9x18 under my bed. Great pistol. I know a lot of guys who use it as their carry. Makarov was my first impression when I saw the picture, glad to see I can identify my baby's cousin.
Sounds like you owe TS and Reaper a beer... :munchin

It looks like a CZ-82 or a CZ-83. The CZ-82 is also known as a VZ-82.

Already confirmed by the owner as a Makarov earlier in this thread.

Shar,
Not a good photo (BFD) but that would be some flavor of a Makarov.
