View Full Version : Laser Boresighting
I've looked around the forums....So here goes.
I've been using a boresighter from Tasco for years, but it's only good for magnified optics on bolt action rifles. I need to sight in J-points, Docters, EOTechs and ACOGs that are mounted to the AR variety of weapons.
Anyone have a recommendation for one for home use and one that is fitting to put in deployment gear to speed up the sighting in process of OEF property that gets dialed in when in country.
Additionally, are laser boresighting systems able to be utilized with iron sights. I would guess that you could establish common sight picture and at 25m using the 6 o'clock hold and at least get it to print on paper, thus saving ammo. Understand that mechanical offset is still a consideration, but primary intention is to establish 300m zero (or something close), quicker, safer and when range facilities are not available.
Any experiences would be appreciated. Money isn't that tight for something such as this since it saves a bit on the backside to offset ammunition expenditures.
Secondary usage would be to use as a training aid to demonstrate the breathing pattern and effects of improper trigger manipulation. If this would fall into the improper use of such a device, what would you recommend. I used Crimson Trace Grips to visually represent how much movement is made when trigger squeeze is applied vs. the slap/recoil anticipation in a pistol. Made a great dryfire tool but I'm looking for something similar for rifles.
My oldest brother had a Bushnell, but it decided to crap out and break. One of the rods took a poop. I've known of 3 people that have had the same problem. I'm leaning towards a Site Lite SL 100 MAG System or a SSI.
Thanks ahead of time.

They work fine for the dry firing you intend on doing. A 'Poor Man's' Beamhit.
For actually zeroing a rifle -- they are of little value. You can bore sight using your eyeballs in 10% of the time it takes to zero one of those lasers and your eyes will be ten times more accurate. You just have to know exterior ballistics in terms of bullet drop to get a bore sight within about three minutes with an optic to 1000 yards. I bore sight irons at 25 yards and they tend to stay within two minutes of true zero at 300 yards. It is pretty easy, costs nothing, and is ten times more accurate than mechanical devices. IMHO of course.

I have only seen one laser bore sighter that will zero your weapon to 200 meters within 2 moa or better and that one is not for sale. :D
All the others are junk as far as I am concerned.

If I bring you a SABR could I use said "not for sale" item??? ;)

Gene Econ Sir, if I may put my .02:
jbour13,
you don't even need a fancy boresighter for that purpose. I used a red-neck-engineered system aka. laser pointer + duct tape + common sense, to illustrate the basics at the range. Works 100% as everybody understood what we were talking about ie. NPOA, position, breathing, clean-break usw.

Who are you teaching chimpanzees?
Where on earth did you learn to use such teaching methods? (Don't say the US Army SF cause I've never see or heard of such a technique.)
Next time I'll read the whole post......

Beamhit. It's not really a boresight but it does work well for basic marksmanship training. The 190 is reasonably priced, has all the feedback, and the sessions can be saved for analysis.

I have done the same old boy. In fact, I have used the laser boresighting devices the Army issues for the same exact purpose and they worked better to show wobble areas, trigger control, and the effects of pulse and breathing better than they did to boresight. It worked extremely well and we were able to get guys to call shots very well without the noise and problems of live fire on ranges. Made the live firing far more effective. I would say it allowed us 30% more training in a day.
I have even taped laser pointers to rifles myself and it also works for the purposes you so state. When it comes to training guys to call shots, such devices are incredibly valuable and calling shots is mission essential if you want to get performance out of guys when firing live ammo.
Bottom line for me is that it has worked although I wish we could have had a better set up than green tape and a fifteen dollar laser pointer.
Beamhit is a good option if you have enough money to buy enough systems to allow for fast through put. However, Beamhit doesn't work too well outside in variable lighting conditions. You really need a pretty dark area for Beamhit but if you have such an area, a day working with Beamhit will save you three days on a range with live ammo.

I realize this is an old thread, but I have to ask you gents a question pertaining to the beamhit system. I recently gained employment at an indoor range which trains/certifies DoD law enforcement personnel in rifle, pistol, and shotgun qual. There are a fair amount of people coming in with little or no prior marksmanship training. Since we have limited space that doesn't expose people to lead dust (i.e. small classroom) I suggested acquiring a beamhit as an option. There is the standard one I'm used to, such as the larger Alt-C, and the little set you set up 15 meters away with the plastic overlays. However, I was wondering if any of you have used the 390v6 which has the shoot/don't shoot scenarios, paper qual target simulator etc., and how you liked it as a training aid. Sorry for the drawn out post, but I felt the need to explain my situation for some insight. Thanks in advance!
