SFAS Training Uniform

Hey guys,

I was looking at the SFAS packing list on the Bragg website and it states "4 PR. BDU’S/ACU’S". Now my question is are they switching to ACU's for training or is the uniform still BDU's? The reason I ask is because I would like to know which pair of boots I should break in. I know before I deployed a buddy was going to selection and the uniform was still BDU's. Currently I am in Afghanistan and if the uniform is ACU's then i'll just use my current desert boots and work on breaking them in, however if the uniform is still BDU's (not sure if it changed over the year) I'll need to have a pair of jungle boots sent over. I searched every page of this section and could not find any similar topic nor in the search tool. Thanks for any help guys...

When I was at Selection in October that question was posed to the Col. when he was briefing us at Bank Hall before our release. His response was that SWCS would follow the Army guidelines. Since the Army just announced a wear out date of April, I would assume after that date they will not be permitted at Selection.

Hey man,
ACUs or BDUs, it doesnt matter, both are authorized. If you already have broken in desert boots and an abundance of ACUs, just wear that. Thats what I wore and its what most people will wear. Very soon the BDUs will wear out, so your definetely alright with the ACUs. Good Luck and never quit.

Thanks for the response and insight on what you guys experienced there as far as uniform wear. Will definitely be a lot easier since I will not have to get jungle boots shipped in and for the most part my desert boots are already broken in...Thanks again fellas...

Remember: you always want to be the gray man, and if you are one of the few guys there in BDU's, you'll stick out like a sore thumb and become a target.

I prefer BDU's, but I'd throw on my Cinder Block Cami's to blend in with the crowd.

I was there for the Nov-Dec class and there was an abundance of both ACU and BDU. In fact some guys mixed and matched uniforms together, ie. BDU top and ACU bottoms or vice versa. That was probably the first and last time I'll see that!

Do not do this.
It singles you out. It is unprofessional in appearance and action, and serves no purpose other than showing you don't know how to properly wear your uniform.
You may think it is no big deal...but if it comes down between you and someone else with the same evaluations, and you look like a dork with a mixed uniform all the time....guess what-it becomes a discriminator.

This is what the AR670-1 (3/2005) has to say:

Chapter 3
Temperate, Hot-Weather, and Enhanced Hot-Weather Battle Dress Uniforms
3–1. Authorization for wear
The temperate, hot-weather (HW), and enhanced hot-weather (EHW) battle dress uniforms (BDUs) are authorized for
year-round wear by all personnel when prescribed by the commander. (See figs 3–1 and 3–2.)
(1) Belt, web with open-faced black buckle (para 27–2a and b).
(2) Boots, combat, leather black (para 27–3).
(3) Chaplain’s apparel (para 27–7).
(4) Coat, black all weather (para 27–8).
(5) Gloves, black leather shell with inserts (para 27–12a).
(6) Handbags.
(a) Black, clutch type, optional purchase (para 27–13a).
(b) Black, shoulder (para 27–13d).
(7) Hat, drill sergeant (para 27–14).
(8) Military police accessories (para 27–16).
(9) Neckgaiter, optional purchase (para 27–17).
(10) Scarves.
(a) Black (with black overcoat only) (para 27–21a).
(b) Olive-green 208 (para 27–21b).
(11) Socks, black, cushion sole (para 27–24a).
(12) Undergarments (paras 27–28).
(13) Undershirt, brown (para 27–28e).

As you know we have quite alot of US military left over here and I've never seen desert boots with the BDU (only DCU) or black boots with the ACU.

When i went to SFAS in 2005, desert boots were authorized to wear with BDU's. As well as all the way through the Q Course. This may change soon with the wear out date of the BDU in the near future. I couldn't find anything in the most recent Summary of change in the AR, but as we all know commanders can adjust policies depending on certain situations.

As to mixing uniforms, like Eagle5US said, I would not recommend it. I personally could see no reason why it was done since everything gets dirty.

When I was there in Nov-Dec. we were told what was acceptable for wear and I would guess the same will be true for future classes. Just follow instructions and don't deviate. At that time both tan and black boots were authorized and tan boots could be worn with any uniform.

As for that excerpt from 670-1, I'm not sure if perhaps it was modified by a local commander or Army-level memo, but for at least three years now, I've seen conventional soldiers wearing the issued tan desert boots with BDUs at both Ft Carson and Peterson AFB on a frequent basis, and I recall the issue being discussed among senior NCOs and found allowable when I was working for an Army MACOM on Pete.

When they do a Snivel Gear (spelling) check, they will make you drop your pants. Wear a turquoise thong over pink speedos. You may get a positive assessment.

When I was back at SWCC everyone I was with wore BDU/Desert Boots. They told us it was good to go. A lot guys I know left in the Q still wear BDU with deserts. But according to the Army Times BDUs wear out date is April 30th 2008 :(

It is still this way today, I wore BDU's with tan desert boots until i arrived at the JSOMTC and still wear them for certain activities. But that ends the 30th of April.
