Springfield Armory XD Tactical 45 ACP

Hi All,

I received one of these as a Christmas present (It's a 10th Grp Special Edition 185 of 200) and was just curious on what the concensus was around here regarding the piece (actual field use versus range time). Also looking for links for accessories (Spare mags, holsters, tac lites...) and other insights.

I've been out of the shooting loop (eat, sleep, shit guns... I still carry and practice with my carry piece though) for the last few years and just getting back into the groove and was looking for opinions and comments. I have a couple of 1911s but always lean towards my Browning HP. If this piece is good as some of the write ups I've read on it, I might purchase one for carry.

I've got the xd9 and love it. I've talked with others at the range that have the 45 and they say nothing but good things. It's a nice little cannon.

I've got an XD9 and an XD45; both are tactical (5") models. I'm very satisfied with them - to the point that I may look at getting a .40 S&W version. I'm finding that I shoot them more than any of my other pistols. Personally I feel that the XD9 is an excellent "instructor" pistol - easy to shoot well, very accurate, cheap ammo, minimal fatigue factor, and duplicates the XD45 closely enough for training purposes. I could sing similar praises about the XD45 excepting only the cost of ammo and the fatigue factor of shooting .45 all day - especially for multi-day training. The XD45 makes an excellent field gun (something about the confidence a .45 inspires :D). I'm already planning to send both of them back to Springfield for night sights and trigger work. Not that there's anything wrong; I personally think the pistols are worth the additional investment to maximize their potential. I'm not impressed with the XD Gear holster or mag pouch that came with the .45 (partly because I'm left handed :p). I'm using Bladetech gear and like it a lot - for range and field use. The stuff I have is not concealment quality, nor am I sure I would want kydex for concealment. Personal opinion: if you want "tactical tupperware" - go XD, you won't regret it. I don't care what anybody says, they beat hell out of Glocks. (I've described them as "Gen III" Glocks - a marked improvement on the original.) My .02, FWIW. Peregrino

PS - Get original magazines. Springfield has an XD Accessory Kit with 3 mags, a double mag pouch, and a plastic box to hold everything. I got mine from Jim's Pawn (hang my head in shame) for 39.99. I couldn't afford not to at that price. Last I checked he still had a table full of the 45 kits.

I spent this past year using a XD9 Tactical in IDPA. This gun has a little less than 10,000 rounds on it. I can only remember two instances where I had a failure to feed, and in both cases it was with a Zero bullet loaded on the long side (1.15OAL) and a bunch of failure to fires with Winchester primers when I replaced the OEM striker with a lighter one. That problem went away when I went back to a factory rated striker spring. With Barsto and Storm Lake making after market tubes and a wide variety of after market sights you have plenty of options to choose from.

One important note is if you dry fire the gun you must use a snap cap. If you look at the slide from the top you will notice a roll pin to the rear of the ejection port. Without a round in the chamber the striker has enough room to travel forward and hit that pin. Over time it will cause the pin to break and chances are it will render the gun useless when it does. I bought a bunch of replacement roll pins from pistol gear and replace them frequently. I probably don't need to because I use a snap cap when I dry fire but it is very cheap insurance.

I have an XD40 Tactical that I am about ready to have melted down. I have sent the pistol back to Springfield twice now for failure to feed, the magazine is not seating high enough and the round is being rammed into the magazine well. Everytime that I think about it, it just makes my blood boil.

This is the reason I have the 9. I originally had the 40 but had the same problems you're having. After a little research on the net I found that this was a known problem and, supposedly, been since corrected in the later models. Luckily the place I bought it from was nice enough to exchange it after they saw the evidence against it.

Possibly just my perception but it seems like if a range day/class runs over 400 rounds there's at least one XD that fails. I do like the ergonomics & the grip safety.

My G35 just keeps going & going. Same with my SIG 245. It's seen a couple classes with nary a burp or snort. :lifter

I picked up my XD 45 5" over leave while I was home. Took it to the range twice and put over 200 rds through it both times. I had no problems and my brother-in-law-to-be, who is a die hard Glock man, was impressed:D. Now for some Tru-Glo tritium sights...Just my 2 cents
