A Siberian Tiger escaped from the San Francisco zoo on Christmas night. The cat attacked 3 people in the cafe at the zoo, killing one. Cops showed up and shot the tiger dead. The other 2 victims were taken to the hospital in serious, but stable condition.
Interestingly enough, turns out this is the same cat that escaped on the 26th of December last year, and mauled a Zoo worker at that same location.
Talk about freaky odds, and what a way to go on Christmas night.

TR,
Your father taught you well. The bull doesn't care nor is he interested much in talking about it.
Many years ago a friend and I fished our way down a small Cascade mountain stream in a kind of tight canyon. Fishing was pretty good because most folks wouldn't have gone there (maybe because the rules said not to).
We came around a corner and found a pair of black bear cubs...
...and mother. We forgot to try taunting the bear to see what she'd do.

How unimaginative of you. Such a wasted opportunity to taunt some of the local wildlife. I understand the mama bears have a tremendous amount of respect for those who throw rocks at their cubs. They recognize them as fearless, courageous and most likely to pick up women.

Good choice, Sir.
Siberian Tigers have hunted Humans in Siberia for hundreds of years. Humans were and still are the easiest prey for them. There are plenty of documented cases of Humans being stalked for weeks or months at a time by these Man Eaters.

You can view their heads mounted at the Chicago Field Museum. They killed up to 135 men in Tsavo, Kenya while building the Uganda-Mambossa railway in 1889. Charles Remingting and a big game hunter named Ryle finally dispatched the two.

I stand corrected. It was Lions, not Tigers.
I believe the name was Patterson, not Remington that dispatched the Lions.
I just heard on Fox that a tennis shoe print had been found on the fence and they were searching for other prints inside the fence. They are also matching prints from the three people who were hurt.
Personally, I think that tiger was chasing someone when he jumped the moat and climbed a 12 ft. fence, lots of energy spent to not be chasing something.

Gets better by the minute.
Now the cops say, that, the two jack-offs that were wounded by the tiger, are being "uncooperative". The same two that were "beligerent" and "uncooperative" with the police, during a seperate incident last year.
The writings all over the wall on this one. Those jack asses were teasing a big cat, that eats things for a living, and it got the better of them. Now that the facts are coming to light, they're all mum.

It may sound strange, but if it came to light that they somehow teased the cat to the point of killing their buddy, could they somehow be head liable for his death? I hope that question doesn't sound too stupid.

That may depend on whether their activities constituted a felony.
Most states have laws which allow the the survivors to be charged with murder if someone dies during the commission of a felony.

One theory that was proposed in 1990 after scientific study of the two Lions from the Tsavo, Kenya incident is that both lions had absessed teeth thus making their normal diet painful to kill and to chew. They opted for the human prey since it was easy and biting into the human flesh and bone was more comfortable on the teeth.
It's just a theory.
As for the two clowns, it's apparent that they have learned a bit of zoology on big cats. :munchin
The ignorance of people still amazes me. Although the fact remains that the animal should of never been able to escape from it's holding area. This zoo has had problems in the past. I can see the lawyers lining up now.

Here we have a Cat that is capable of stalking a human being in the wild for over a month, snatching the human from his home, and killing him... when there are other alternatives in his AO that he could have spent less time on and reaped more benefits from (how much meat are you really going to get off of a human carcass vs a dear, multiple dogs, wolves, etc.?)
I'm not a freaking rocket scientist nor a zoologist but has it not occured to these "experts" that this same Cat has jack-shit else to do all day everyday but to figure a way out of his cage, so he can feed his primial (or animal equlivant) urge to hunt and kill.

Being stupid should be a chargeable offense in many situations...but here, I am wondering if somehow luring this cat to it's demise, and on top of that, being negligent towards authorities could constitute any legal action. Maybe they didn't mean to get the cat killed, and they were defending their buddy....I cannot make that call, and the evidence will speak for itself, but their acts of idiocy seem to put their friend in danger, and therefore he died.
I read in the Press Democrat today that they were "defending their friend". Interesting spin on things, if I must say so myself. I will be interested to read tomorrows news.

Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy! Here are a couple of tidbits from a speach earlier this year when he was arguing against a prison construction bill:
"I’ll tell you one thing, though, that I know for sure. Californians, in the last 25 years, have wanted to put people in prison. Prisons were going to make us safe. Prisons, somehow, it’s going to make those that have safe from those that don’t."
"So we’re jammed up in this [overcrowding] situation right now because we have fallen in love with one of the most undocumented, nonevidentiary beliefs. And that is somehow you get safer if you put more people in jail."
Lefty link: http://www.californiaprogressreport.com/2007/04/senate_leader_d.html
I wonder if his "jacked" car was provided by the taxpayers?
Oops, it was! Just found this:
Perata said today that he no longer carries a concealed-weapons permit and there was no gun in his state car.
Perata said he never had the permit renewed when it expired two years ago because he "just never had the opportunity to re-qualify" at a gun range. Perata obtained the permit out of security concerns stemming from his work regulating firearms. (Emphasis mine)

A critter will only hunt to ease the hunger urge. This tigger was well fed, not need to hunt.
Only other reason to attack is if the critter felt threatened. If they indeed did find slingshots on the kids, they are lucky they are still alive and it's too bad they were not eliminated from the gene pool.
Should be interesting to see how this plays out in the courts/lawsuits etc. There will be a few people staying well employed for a couple years by this. (no offense to the legal eagles on this board)

Fact, feral cats and dogs will hunt and kill for pleasure and just to fulfill the urge to hunt.
The only thing more dangerous than a pack of wild hungry wolves is a pack of feral dogs.
I've seen feral dogs aggressive behavior first hand, I've watched them form a pack and approach (me & others) with evil intent, their only mistake was that the dogs could not distinguish the fact we were all armed and I was sporting a scoped M16A-3. The pack leader did not survive the encounter.
Q. My cat is well-fed so he doesn't hunt when he goes out. Why should I keep him inside?
A. Scientific studies have shown that well-fed cats do kill wildlife because the hunting instinct and the urge to eat are controlled by different parts of a cat's brain. Although he may not eat what he kills, the fact that he has a full stomach does not mean he won't stalk and kill an animal.

A lot of times too, you hear about these Big Cats, attacking hikers up in the hills, along trails and passes.
There's been reports of Wolves coming down into Rocky Mountain National Park and also Estes Park. Apparently, they're following the Moose that have been steadily moving southward. Which is a good thing to see. :D

DOW kills bear that attacked woman
Aspen Times Staff
Aspen, CO Colorado
October 30, 2007
ASPEN – State and federal wildlife officers on Saturday killed a male bear that attacked and injured an Aspen woman on Oct. 17.
According to a statement from the Colorado Division of Wildlife, officers located the bear using a GPS tracking collar placed on it earlier this year as part of a wildlife research project monitoring black bear behavior. They killed the bear about a mile east of Aspen around 3 p.m. Saturday.
“By verifying collar tracking data, officers are sure that they have eliminated the bear responsible for the earlier incident,” Wildlife Division spokesman Randy Hampton said in the statement. “Tracking equipment had enabled wildlife officers to get close to the bear on several previous attempts, but nearby homes made it impossible to safely shoot the bear on those occasions.”
On Oct. 17 the bear, which weighed approximately 450 pounds and was likely 5 to 10 years old, opened a sliding glass door and entered a Judith Garrison’s Aspen condo at about 1:30 a.m. The woman surprised the bear in the kitchen, and the bear clawed her in the face, causing serious injuries.
“Tests are being run on the bear to determine whether it had any diseases or health issues that may have contributed to the aggressive behavior,” Hampton reported, noting that neither this particular bear nor any other has been involved in any human encounters in the Aspen area since Oct. 17.
“Black bear attacks are uncommon, but these powerful predators can become dangerous when lured to developed areas by human food sources,” Hampton continued. “Residents are reminded to close and lock doors and eliminate bear attractants such as trash, bird feeders, pet food, barbecue grills and fruit trees.”
While most bears should be either in their dens for winter hibernation or heading in that direction, Hampton said there likely are still a few large males seeking to fatten up a little more before they den up.
And in the past some bears, particularly large males that have become very habituated to human-sourced foods, have stayed out all winter long, he said.
The Bear just opened the sliding glass door himself and walked inside.

Visitors Leave Makeshift Memorial to Slain Tiger as San Francisco Zoo Reopens
Thursday , January 03, 2008
Visitors to the San Francisco Zoo placed flowers, cards and photographs near a sculpture of a bronze tiger Thursday in honor of the escaped tiger who was shot dead by police after mauling three people.
Nine days after the attack, the San Francisco Zoo reopened amid heightened scrutiny of its security procedures and a flurry of questions over the incident that led to a teenager's death.
The big cat enclosure where a 350-pound Siberian tiger escaped Christmas Day was closed and will remain so indefinitely, while visitors Thursday found a new public alert system and more signs around the facility warning people not to pester the animals.
Many visitors at the zoo said they wanted to show their support for the facility.
"They do their best to keep everybody safe," said Dianne Todd, of Sunnyvale, who was there with her two young sons.
Click here for more from KTVU FOX San Francisco.
Click to read Adam Housley's on-the-scene blog.
The improvements were made as police investigated whether the victims had taunted the tiger before it climbed or leaped out of its outdoor pen. Carlos Sousa Jr., 17, was killed, and his two friends were severely injured.
"All I know is that something happened to provoke that tiger to leap out of her exhibit," zoo director Manuel Mollinedo said Wednesday. He declined to elaborate because the police investigation continued.
A woman has claimed she saw three men teasing the lions shortly before the tiger attack, according to a report on the Web site of the San Francisco Chronicle. Jennifer Miller, who was at the zoo on Christmas with her husband and two children, said the family left the area because her kids were disturbed by the young men's behavior.
"The boys, especially the older one, were roaring at them. He was taunting them," Miller told the newspaper.
Police talked to Miller on Wednesday, but were not able to corroborate reports that the victims taunted the tigers, Inspector Valerie Matthews said. They also could not substantiate Miller's claim that a fourth person was with the attack victims, or what effect the taunting she described might have had.
"I don't know if what they did was any more than what kindergartners do at the zoo every day," Matthews told the Chronicle.
Sgt. Steve Mannina, a police spokesman, said investigators were looking into whether alcohol was a factor in the attack. Toxicology tests on Sousa's body have not been completed yet, and results likely will not come back for several weeks, according to the San Francisco medical examiner's office.
Miller said Sousa, whom she later recognized in newspaper photos, was not harassing the animals.
Mark Geragos, an attorney for the survivors — brothers Kulbir Dhaliwal, 23, and Paul Dhaliwal, 19 — said none of the victims did anything to goad the tiger into breaking loose.
"That's just nonsense," Geragos said. "There is no evidence of taunting whatsoever because there was no taunting."
Earlier this week, he said the zoo was slow in its response to the escaped tiger, an assertion at least partially backed up by police dispatch logs showing that employees initially questioned whether early reports of the attack were coming from a mentally unstable person.
Mollinedo brushed off Geragos' claims Wednesday, saying he was satisfied with the employees' response. He declined to elaborate, citing the investigation.
None of the zoo's lions or tigers was on view Thursday.
Zoo officials say the tiger likely climbed out of an empty moat that separated the public from the animal's enclosure, which had a 12 1/2-foot wall, making it 4 feet shorter than the recommended minimum height for U.S. zoos.
The city has hired an architect to design a new, more secure pen that would put a 19-foot-tall barrier between visitors and the zoo's big cats, Mollinedo said Wednesday.

Police: Victim drunk during tiger attack
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080118/ap_on_re_us/tiger_attacks
SAN FRANCISCO - One of the three victims of San Francisco Zoo tiger attack was intoxicated and admitted to yelling and waving at the animal while standing atop the railing of the big cat enclosure, police said in court documents filed Thursday.
Paul Dhaliwal, 19, told the father of Carlos Sousa Jr., 17, who was killed, that the three yelled and waved at the tiger but insisted they never threw anything into its pen to provoke the cat, according to a search warrant affidavit obtained by the San Francisco Chronicle.
"As a result of this investigation, (police believe) that the tiger may have been taunted/agitated by its eventual victims," according to Inspector Valerie Matthews, who prepared the affidavit. Police believe that "this factor contributed to the tiger escaping from its enclosure and attacking its victims," she said.
Sousa's father, Carlos Sousa Sr., said Dhaliwal told him the three stood on a 3-foot-tall metal railing a few feet from the edge of the tiger moat. "When they got down they heard a noise in the bushes, and the tiger was jumping out of the bushes on him (Paul Dhaliwal)," the documents said.
Police found a partial shoe print that matched Paul Dhaliwal's on top of the railing, Matthews said in the documents.
The papers said Paul Dhaliwal told Sousa that no one was dangling his legs over the enclosure. Authorities believe the tiger leaped or climbed out of the enclosure, which had a wall 4 feet shorter than the recommended minimum.
The affidavit also cites multiple reports of a group of young men taunting animals at the zoo, the Chronicle reported.
Mark Geragos, an attorney for the Dhaliwal brothers, did not immediately return a call late Thursday by The Associated Press for comment. He has repeatedly said they did not taunt the tiger.
Calls to Sousa and Michael Cardoza, an attorney for the Sousa family, also weren't returned.
Toxicology results for Dhaliwal showed that his blood alcohol level was 0.16 — twice the legal limit for driving, according to the affidavit. His 24-year-old brother, Kulbir, and Sousa also had alcohol in their blood but within the legal limit, Matthews wrote.
All three also had marijuana in their systems, Matthews said. Kulbir Dhaliwal told police that the three had smoked pot and each had "a couple shots of vodka" before leaving San Jose for the zoo on Christmas Day, the affidavit said.
Police found a small amount of marijuana in Kulbir Dhaliwal's 2002 BMW, which the victims rode to the zoo, as well as a partially filled bottle of vodka, according to court documents.
Investigators also recovered messages and images from the cell phones, but apparently nothing incriminating in connection with the tiger attack, the Chronicle reported.
Zoo spokesman Sam Singer said he had not seen the documents but believed the victims did taunt the animal, even though they claim they hadn't.
"Those brothers painted a completely different picture to the public and the press," Singer said. "Now it's starting to come out that what they said is not true."

Based on reports so far, they would not get squat if I were on the jury.
Our actions have consequences.

Spot on Reaper. I just hope the judge and jury can also see some sense and logic. But you never know with jury's these day's. Thats what I fear most.
The problem facing the zoo is this:
if they make everything idiot proof, someone will make a better idiot.

Autopsy Finds Marijuana, Alcohol in Teenager Killed by San Francisco Zoo Tiger Tuesday, June 03, 2008:rolleyes:
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,362764,00.html
SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Medical Examiner says a teenager who was killed by an escaped zoo tiger six months ago had marijuana and alcohol in his system.
The toxicology report was released Monday. It is included with an autopsy that concluded 17-year-old Carlos Sousa Jr. was killed by "blunt force injuries of the head and neck."
Sousa's two friends also were seriously injured when a 250-pound Siberian tiger escaped its enclosure at San Francisco Zoo on Christmas Day.
Michael Cardoza, a lawyer for the Sousa family, says it's irrelevant whether the teen was drinking or smoking pot before he was mauled. The family is suing the city.
The wall surrounding the tiger's enclosure was found to be 4 feet lower than recommended industry standards.

I think if you are drunk, high, and stupidly taunting a tiger and it attacks you, you got what you deserved.
The tiger was the chlorine in his gene pool, too bad the friends escaped.

The Tiger must have thought that he just had Marinade on him. Probably tasted better with a little Herb and Beer sauce.:D
