View Full Version : Experience with Classes/Professors
I am taking a few courses at AMU (American Military University) this upcoming winter and was curious if anyone has either had experience with the professors, courses, or related courses in any of the other programs.
The courses are: Seminar in Asymmetric Warfare, Special Operations and National Policy, and Covert Action and National Security
The instructors names are: Steven and Thomas Greer, both retired (I believe one as LTC and the other as SGM from USA).
Thanks,
jb
Although I got my master's in a different program than what you are in, I found AMU to be a pretty good school. All of the professors I had in my degree program (Transportation/Logisitcs Management) were currently in their field of study and were very infomative and helpful.
The thing I found to be the most help was the discussion board with the other students.
Good luck in your classes.
Steve Greer and I were in B/3/5 which later became B/1/3 and served in Desert Storm and other deployments.
Steve Greer had to leave Special Forces because of the wear of an unauthorized “SCUBA” badge: that should have been a “military” career ender!
When I was in Iraq as an IC, Steve was seen on FOX News as an analyst; that set off a shit-storm with the SF guys on the ground. Telephone calls were going out by every possible means of communications to the states and FOX News….and they were not positive either!
Stay safe.

Guy
Mr Scuba had the nerve to do Fox Analyst? Hell I could not stand his attitude then in the BN much less would let him teach me after he was found out and moved out. I can not believe he made SGM. CrashXX after a few days mention during his lecture that his old friends from 3/5 and 1/3 say hello and see how he reacts.

SF is a small community..... too small to attempt to wear unearned medals or badges..... I agree with you Guy, he should have been thrown out of the US Army.

I took a few classes and was left largely dissatisfied. I found the instructors to be distant, uninvolved and at times, ignorant to the very topics in which they instruct. It appears to be one of those schools in which you take classes for the sake of checking the block towards a degree and any real depth of value in eductation would have to come from somewhere else.
Let me qualify this all by stating that I ran my own business for 7 years during a break in service. To which, I thought I would go back and get the Business degree to go along with my life experiences. Turns out they are attempting to teach me what I have partical application of, and it does not work to well. Seriously, how can an instructor who is a full-time Active Duty recruiter for the USMC going to impart his knowledge onto a student about the business world?
CrashXX, I think you've seen the opinions of at least one Greer brother by men that served alongside him. I'll tell you the opinions on the other are at least as poor. To me, how your peers regard your capabilities and ethics are worth more than gold. You do what you feel is right for you, but don't forget to consider how the men that could be teaching you are regarded by their peers, particularly in matters of honor and integrity.
Wow....
All QP's and those who responded I appreciate your quick and candid replies. The course I am finishing up right now at AMU has really only been beneficial because of the diverse group of students and their experiences (personal, professional, academic, etc...). Para, I can see where you're coming from with your comment about instructors being distant and/or uninvolved.
Guy, SF_BHT: Is it looked down upon when guys leave if they become analysts for companies like Fox; or does it depend on the individuals? I think maybe I'd wait until the course eval comes out to tell him "old friends from 3/5 and 1/3 say hello."

Crash, read the specifics of the comments again carefully and you'll get your answer. Some things can be forgiven--ethical violations are not in that group.

I certainly cannot speak for all of the instructors at AMU, but the instructor I had for anatomy was outstanding. He communicated with the students and made the course interesting and challenging. The instructor I had for a counter intel class was equally up to the class and was a terrific teacher. I was surprised at how communicative they were. However, my teachers for some of the basic courses were horrible.
