Who's making the hot .40 cal round, for civis? I'm looking for, off the shelf, max SPEED & ENERGY.

... OR...

If it were in Samuel Jackson's gun, it'd be the round that says, "Bad Mother F#@ker!" on it.

TR: Sorry. I know it's LeMas, but I can't get any now that I'm out of the suck. Unlesssssssss... little brother can acquire me some, prior to EAS.

I gotta call him... what time is it in Hawaii...................

Max speed and enegery does not always equate to more effective.

I tend to pick up whatever the local cops are carrying, as long as it has a decent track record.

I really like The Reapers advice on this one. Having said that, if you are interested in hot 40S&W the two places I would look are Buffalo Bore and Corbon.

I tend to think as TR stated, "Max speed and enegery does not always equate to more effective."

My thinking; A firearm is made to opperate in a range. HP loads can cause a firearm to have a much shorter life. If I needed a hot 40 S&W load, I would probably go to a 10mm. It would just keep things more simple.

I use Doubletap in 10mm.

A friend of mine uses Doubletap in 40.

He did some rudimentary penetration/expansion tests and found that the 165gr and 180gr loads performed best.

If you call the listed number, sometimes you can get the owner on the phone.
He'll tell you for what purpose he designed each load.

I use Doubletap ammo in my Glock 20 (10MM). My .40 Cal is a Glock 27 and I use Golden Saber 185 grain .40 in it. Or the Federal Personal Defense .40 Cal.

Swatsurgeon has quite a few posts in here showing what he's pulled out of people!! His recommendation is Remington Golden Saber.

I used to think that Hydra-Shocks were it, but he's pulled many of them out that may as well have been Ball!!

Gents,

I took TR's advice, and talked with some of the local cops that I know. All but one of them, carry the Remy Golden Sabers. When backed up with recommendations by QPs, and since I can't buy LeMas legally, the choice seems clear.

TR: PM sent.

Just to throw this in, my dept has had really good results (in regard to one hit stoppages) with the Speer Gold Dot 185 (or 180) gr. round.

AM,

I checked the link. Great info! Thanks, to SWATSURGEON, for sharing the naratives and pics!

Until now, I've always shot ball from handguns. Tomorrow will be my first shooting of a JHP handgun ammo... allbeit on paper... disimilar effect. I want to get familiar with the rounds bi-product; recoil and rapid re-acquisition.
My previous knowledge with regards to JHP handgun ammunition was non-existent, and limited to thinking that the expansion was to produce a larger cavity. Period.

As a DM, I always shot .308 BTHP. I was taught that the BT helped to stabalize long distance shots. Since it's traveling at a high velocity and with a fair amount of energy, I never thought much of the HP aspect of the rounds... just knew that catastrophic shot placement would ruin one's week.

After SWATSURGEON's post, I now know that, those jagged little "leaf thingies" can do some catastrophic damage with regards to blood vessels, in an area that would otherwise be non-life threatening. Of course, as he stated, 1 to the snot locker will usually do the trick regardless of round or Cal.

I've always been a rifle guy... but this has really got the gears turning, and me thirsty for handgun ammunition knowledge.:lifter

My handguns and I, need to get better acquainted, I think.

Thanks all.

In general, a pistol bullet type of a certain weight and velocity will feel about the same as any other bullet of the same weight and velocity.

A 185 gr. JHP at 1000 fps will feel the same to the shooter as a 185 gr. FMJ or SWC at that velocity.

The BT on the BTHP affects drag and BC, IIRC. The HP on that round is not there for terminal effect, it is a HP to keep the weight of the bullet and the center of gravity further aft, toward the base, resulting in a more stable projo.

Shot placement isn't catastrophic, it should be precise.

My thoughts got jumbled up. What I was trying to say was that, a shot placed in a precise area i.e.; any frontal, rear or lateral path to the... brain stem... kidney... heart, (per DM school) will yield catastrophic results faster then other areas.

They didn't teach us metalurgy or much about ammunition, and we predominately used FMJ. Mostly advanced marksmanship, TD, TA and ID, scope basics, slightly above average things.

HIJACK: I'm learning new things on this site every day. It's amazing the amount of knowledge compiled here. I looked at some of the areas on here and realised I'm using and limiting myself to about 2% of this site. This place is impressive.
