A group of congressmen has asked the Department of Veterans Affairs to reconsider its ban on the flag-folding ceremony at military funerals after the agency decided last month to streamline burials at federal cemeteries

Actually, at an internment service in Kalifornia, someone complained about the religious comments at a couple of the folds and the VA decided that it was easier to drop the whole ceremony rather than to deliver it without religuious commentary upon request.

Welcome to the secular state.

This is a can of worms...but the flag folding ceremony is just the latest hit.

Maybe I'm wrong, but this seems to be creeping like a cancer and one of these days we are going to realize that the departure from the values that began our country can not be recovered.

Continuing to stock the hide-site

The National Park Service, a branch of the federal government, has joined the Veterans Administration in establishing anti-Christian bigotry as public policy. The NPS has censored “God” from a key display of America's Christian heritage in Washington.

The reference is an engraving of "Laus Deo," which is Latin for "Praise be to God," on the east side of the 100-ounce aluminum cap atop of the Washington Monument.

Since the actual inscription on the cap is unviewable atop the 555-foot stone column, the NPS created a replica which is on display in the white-colored obelisk of marble, granite and sandstone.

Now “God” has been removed from the plaque containing information about the Washington Monument. In 2000 the plaque read:

APEX OF THE MONUMENT Reproduction The builders searched for an appropriate metal for the apex that would not tarnish and would act as a lightning rod. They chose one of the rarest metals of the time, aluminum. The casting was inscribed with the phrase, Laus Deo, (Praise be to God).

The NPS censored the last sentence from the latest plaque, which now reads:

CAP OF THE MONUMENT Reproduction The builders searched for appropriate metal for the cap that would not tarnish and would act as a lightning rod. They chose one of the rarest metals of the time – aluminum.

In addition, the replica of the cap which is in the monument has been positioned so close to the wall that the wording “Laus Deo” cannot be read. Prior to the censorship by the NPS, the replica wording could be read.

It was the third time in just the past few weeks that an agency of the federal government has banned the use of “God.” First was the Architect of the Capitol banning religious references when issuing flag certificates. That ruling was later rescinded. Next came the Veterans Administration censoring religious references in the script used to describe each fold of the flag at 125 national cemeteries. That censoring came after only one person complained.

Because of the NPS censorship, children and other visitors to the monument now have no way to know that the words, 'Laus Deo,' ('Praise be to God'), are inscribed on the original cap atop the monument! This censoring of God will help establish anti-Christian bigotry into federal law.

I understand TR's guidance in other threads but the following smart assed comment came to mind when I read the above quote:

It's possible that the simple ommission of the reference to God might preserve it as a lightning rod in itself.:D

Does this mean that soon people will not accept (which is against the law BTW) my U.S. federal reserve notes and coinage money as settlement for a debt denominated in U.S. currency? Hence the term "Legal Tender"

Or will my currency soon be reprinted / reissued with "In $$$ We Trust" on it?

Course...it will be interesting seeing someone actually pursue this...it is a matter of Congressional Record, 1956 that the phrase "In God We Trust" is the national motto of the United States of America...

I am nothing but a SHL on this...so will of course defer to a more expert opinion RL/AL?

Well, I'm on the fence regarding this one. To be accurate, there are no meanings officially attributed to the folding of a US flag (see US Code), and while the ceremony where each fold represents something special can be touching, its certainly not "official", and therefore should not, IMO, be the default ceremony performed by a government entity. With that said, if the deceased's family requests it (not unlike the wording on a certificate accompanying a flag flown over the Capitol), then the ceremony officials should allow it.

Looks like it's going to be pursued.

It seems every single day that being a Christian, God fearing, Patriot who served his or her country is akin to being an underground separatist group. Well, at least in California.

I would expect that flying the American flag may become so unpopular that it will serve as the mark as an member of a separatist group bent on domestic terrorism.

Ok, I'm taking my tin foil hat off now and replacing it with copper.

I think it's official. If your sexual preference is straight, your an anglo saxon white American male, who served his country in the military, fly's the American flag, practices a christian valued faith, abides by the law, places his or her hand over their heart during the singing of the National Anthem, you are truely a minority in this part of the United States. Speaking of course of places like Seattle Washington, and certain unmentionable districts of California.

I used my G.I. Bill to put my self through my undergraduate degree. I borrowed money from my pop for an masters in business, which I paid back through future bonuses in the financial services industry and I saved money for future endeavors such as a career change. I'm not even able to qualify for tuition assistance, and federal loan programs unless I spend my money and declare bankruptcy. Now I have to follow my sons school curriculum to ensure that he's not being indroctinated with horse crap sensitivity programs towards gays, african americans, and now illegal mexians crossing the boarder. Yeah, I know I'm not the most politically correct person in the room, but then again I don't have to answer to the MSM or Chris Matthews, the dry drunk from CNBC.

I'm just wondering how a large majority of the young male population suddenly recieved an "feminized" indroctrination into their young lives.

California School District Approves 'In God We Trust' Classroom Displays
Tuesday, November 06, 2007

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Trustees of the largest high school district in the country voted 4-1 Monday night to mandate displays bearing the nation's motto — "In God We Trust" — and other historical documents in over 2,300 district classrooms and offices.

The display of the Constitution, Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights will be included in the posters approved by district trustees in Bakersfield, Calif. Monday night.

Kern County High School District trustee Chad Vegas initially proposed the measure as a way of promoting patriotism. But the idea sparked a contentious debate.
