I heard about that after I was in the service for a while. When I was a young soldier, beer was not allowed in Day Rooms.

When I was a young soldier, beer was not allowed in Day Rooms.

Same here. My first day room had a pool table, fussball, several lounge chairs and sofas, a devotional corner, some tables for writing letters, magazine stand, and we gave it that homey look by splitting burlap sand bags (nylon sand bags did not exist then) and tacking them up on the wall for wall paper. It was the place were the troops were paid by whomever was the class A agent of the day (no such thing as check to bank then), where the 1SG collected the tailor/laundry/ and other sundry funds, there was no TV but there was a radio. Hell during duty hours, the troops, much less beer, weren't allowed in the Dayroom.

Few remember the Volar Army Days.

The Volar Beer machine in the dayroom, Volar Dust Cover for the bed, Volar Rug, Volar Lamp and Volar Troops.

How about a case of beer or a couple of bottles in with the resupply drop..... or a beer and sandwich at the club for lunch....

So what kind of beer made the supply drop?

I recall a little march over the Wallberg (1964) in Tegernsee Germany by A/10th Grp led by King Ludwig. When we got to the top of the mountain a helicopter dropped off sandwiches and Hacker Bier.

Few remember the Volar Army Days..

I commanded four companies over my tenure and the absolute biggest pain in the 4th POC was the one when VOLAR came into being in the early 70s. The most important thing that existed was ensuring that all the troops had the VOLAR barracks accoutraments and woe unto the company chain of command if some one came up short. Training, hell there was no training other than the frigging IG coming up with the Feng Shui version of how best to arrange the soldier's room. This was the time that the army saw fit to make company commanders and first sergeants mommies and daddies rather than leaders and trainers. Someone at the higher echelons got confused with thinking that taking care of troops had more to do with desks, chairs, rugs, lamps and choice rather than training to meet mission demands, accountability for ones actions, leading from the front instead of watching from a distance, establishing and maintaining standards, and keeping everyone OG rather than hyphenated individualists.

I had a soldier tell me once that the barracks was his home and I couldn't tell him what he could or could not have in it. He quickly got his ass tore up. The next day the Post CSM stopped by; told me that the CG had gotten a complaint about the barracks and me...... I told the Post CSM that I was signed for that building; that I would make the rules for those that lived there; and that I could retire if that was a problem..... the Post CSM told me it wasn't a problem.... wise ass endured some extra training!

I have always said that the Army started going down hill when they did away with the open bay barracks..... platoons and team started becoming individuals from that time on.....

If didn't past re-inspection, you moved every thing into the tent for week.

Stay safe.

Our dayroom had a bar. It was open after hours when a designated bartender was available. All proceeds went to the company picnic fund.
Notice the bar in the background of the Xmas Party picture. Hopefully I attached the photo correctly!?!

There were beer dispensing machines in the dayrooms of the 82nd as late as 1978.
