Tube alert.

The Military Channel is rerunning a new version ( Combat Zone: A Tight Spot,2007) of ODA-525's incident in Desert Storm.

Gee-whiz computer graphics, interviews with the members, and good covereage of the incident through pilot interviews.

This is different than the previous production, but not by much.

Saw it - cool documentary.

Some good lessons - For example (1) When you go light don't destroy your primary commo equipment and (2) always pack your smoke for the aviators to identify your locale and where NOT to drop their munitions.

I truly wish they had this available on DVD so I could order and watch it. I guess I will have to hope to catch a re-run when I get back CONUS

There was a little blurb not long ago on the Military Channel, about the 525's fight outside Ar Rutba. I don't recall them saying the team's number, but I remembered the battle because Andy Brittenham had showed me some photos of the aftermath, and told me about it.

If this is the Video of F16s dropping CBUs inside of Danger Close, I've seen it. Smoke is OK as a last resort or during cloudy conditions, but I could not believe how long it took them to break out the mirror and put a "Shiny" onto the A/C!!! Smoke is like tracers, it lets everybody know where you are, whereas a mirror is only seen by your intended recipient!!!

I say this as one that has directed fire from aerial platforms much much closer than "Danger Close"!!!

Take care.

I knew all those team members as I was on ODA 515 at the time and located a bit north of them on a similiar mission. I remember listening on the SATCOM that day of their situation. Next day my team was also compromised and had F16s drop CBUs danger close also. We didn't carry smoke either as our average ruck was already 150lbs. You have to start cutting some things off your load. One of my team members later became the 5th Group CSM and then the USASFC CSM after I retired.

Yep, Vigil. Parry was always on the HALO team down the hall on 514 or 534.

Ole Mario sent me to Ranger School when he was the 1/5 CSM. He smoked the dog piss out of me before he would sign my schools checklist. LOL! I deserved it.

Didn't know him personally but remember him. Back in the day he was in 1/5 when I was in 3/5.

My wife and I were in Rota looking for a hop back to Norfolk. I ran into a guy w/ a ODA-525 baseball cap. He said they were trying to get back to the states as well. I saw four or five more SF in the cafeteria at the airport. I wonder if any of them were the same as in the story?

The Sharkmen.

I cut my teeth on that team. A truer batch of criminals I have never seen, but you had to love them all. I had left, gone to Key West and was back in C52 when all this happened.

Sorry for the necro post.

Prior to their 91' explots, back in 85' the Sharkmen put me thru pre SCUBA at Bragg. IIRC FastEddie you were the team leader at the time. :lifter

525 had just returned from Somalia. I was an 18D fresh outta language school (FARSI) and became the Sr medic for 525 in Feb of 94. Their medic at that time was headed to Delta and the other medic was now the TS. Talk about quick schoolin'. I did pre-scuba w/i 3 weeks of arrival, then immediately to Key West, graduated, back to Campbell for 3 weeks and then right back to Key West for DMT. It was a busy 4 months. Ah the "good old days". Man I miss those guys. I still get to see a few of them, but not many.
