Great bunch of guys. I ran into a few of them in Thailand (not Dien Bien Phu pilots) while flying for the 46th.

I had the distinct pleasure of meeting one of these pilots while stationed at Ft Bragg in the mid 80's. There was a local in Free-Pineland that I did work for on the weekends. While doing some work on the roof of a barn/hangar, my buddy said that "Jim" was going to come by and drop off a trade paper since my friend was looking for an aircraft to purchase. (He was on his way up to Raleigh). We thought nothing of it and went back to work.....
About 15 minutes later, a DC-3 came in over us with the belly about scraping the top of the pines...the pilots window slid open and a canister flew out, and landed next to my truck.....Scared the snot out of us and we almost fell off the roof (tin can be pretty slick...)
Jim died some years later in a plane crash. He was doing a check flight for a friend of his on a restored aircraft. His friend was going to do it, but Jim convinced him that he should do it.
Amazing men.
