When I was younger I couldn't get into his music, but I find that as I am getting older that I can relate to his music more and more.

I wonder how many people here like his work. I am such a knucklehead for not understanding the depth of his work all those years.

He was more than a little before my time, but I became a fan after I heard his INCREDIBLE cover of Depeche Mode's Personal Jesus. Amazing artist.

Grew up in a "Johnny Cash" household.... my dad loved Johnny, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc........ it was the soundtrack to my childhood.

I got into Cash on my own at a young age, and my wife loves him as well. We have nearly 40 Cash albums/CDs.

I may of had Bill Monroe for breakfast, but the Man in Black was always present in the evenings as a kid.

I agree... he has a depth that increases as time passes on.

Him and his wife were some good people and outstanding artists.

My Dad had the pleasure of visiting with him on a plane one time when I was younger... He said he was as nice and respectful man as he ever met... but he did have that look in his eye that let you know he had lived the life and loved it.

Thanks Johnny!

You still kick ass in my book and always will.

Grew up on the old 1960's 'bleeped' verion of Live, from Folsom Prison... among others - he's one incredible artist.

You've got to get some Willie, Bob Wills, Asleep at the Wheel, Stonewall Jackson, etc. (too long a list to go on) to round it out.

Never listened to him. When he said he wore black as an anti-war statement, never thought much of him since.

He was an Air Force veteran, I can allow him an anti-war statement, because who should be more anti-war than a soldier who will be sent, or a veteran who chose to put himself in harm's way?

I would consider myself 'anti-war' but not a pacifist, and yes, if asked, I would go back in.

I agree, I think you said it very well for me too. I just have disdain for politicians who do not do their jobs or they are self serving.

In my Dad's house, there were two kinds of music.

1. Country Music

2. Turn that damned noise down.

Johnny Cash was a staple.

I love Johnny Cash's music. As a kid, I remember listening to songs like "Walk the Line", "A Boy Named Sue", and "Big River" (on those really big, black CDs that turned really slow). "Ring of Fire" is still one of my favorites.

On the down side, my mechanical skills came from "One Piece at a Time". Nothing fits. Nothing runs right. :D

Cash is excellent. A Boy Named Sue has been my favorite song as long as I can remember.

"MY NAME IS SUE! HOW DO YOU DO! NOW YOU GONNA DIE!"

Been a fan of the "man in black" since I was a teenager. Man kids (B-10 & D-8) will sing about four songs when I put in the Soundtrack CD. Good to hear them sing off key.

Cash is the shizzle, my folks look at me like I am crazy when I blast him in my truck. My cousin said " Brothas ain't suppose to listen to country." LOL
"Ragged Old Flag", "The Legend Of John Henry's Hammer" and " The Ballad Of Ira Hayes" are a few of my favorites.

Oh yeah. The folks had a big stack of Cash vinyl, and I loved it as a kid. Sure as hell beat Herb Alpert and The T.J. Brass. (Although my idea of porn was to search through the stack of records my parents had and check out the one album cover with the chick all covered in whipped cream :) )

Big River, Cry Cry Cry, Ring of Fire are some of my faves, along with the entire live albums done at San Quinten and Folsom.

Loved the sound of the heavy strings he used on his D-45 and D-28 Martin.

"Hurt" is a cover he did Just before his death and it has an excellent video that goes with it. I really got the feeling that this was his life summed up into one song. If you get the chance you can find it on youtube or myspace.

I was brought up on Johnny Cash music. My collection consists of 45's, 33 1/3's, 8-Tracks, cassettes, and now CD's. I saw him and the Carter Family in concert during the early 70's. Maybelle even made an appearance. My favorite album is "Bitter Tears". Longnecks and Cash, it does not get any better.

I think you need to bang out a few Charlie Pride CDs while "cus" is in the truck.

Charlie's got more than a few good songs his ol' darn self.

Shans-
There was a Scuba/Halo guy up at Ft. Devens when I was there, he was the most country you could be, boots, hat, pickup, exclusively country music ... and he was a brother. Mike was also an excellent NCO and didn't brook any crap from the "give a brother a break" crowd if he caught soldiers or Jr NCOs screwing up.

x_SF,

Understandable. :)

TR,

Sorry if I've blasphemed in some way. For my part, I never cared for the song until I heard the Cash version. I found the combination of vocals with him and Fiona Apple to be very moving. As for S&G, I have an enormous amount of respect for them. Been a fan since HS. Bookends rates as the number 1 of my many favorites.

Aric

Godsmack isn't bad, but Social D will make the evening. And to tie this back into the thread theme, their cover of Ring of Fire is a great put-the-top-down-and-mash-the-pedal song.

Cash Rules!

I have seen Social Distortion many times. The best show was at the Brewery in Raleigh, NC. They did a few Cash covers. Folsom Prision Blues, Ring Of Fire and Walk The Line. After the show our car brok doen on the way back to Bragg. It was 2:45 am and jump manifest was at 0600. Tough night but we made it on time.

Checkout the Dillion cover "Don't Think Twice" on this one, and "Ballad of a Lonely Man," was supposed to be a duet with Johnny Cash but the story goes that Cash was to ill to sing at the time of recording. Awsome steel guitar on the track. Springstein sings on the record too.
