1. If you have to ask, you're not ready, doubt is for the weak.
2. Don't be typical.
3. Don't be predictiable.
4. If you didn't expect it, you weren't prepared.
5. Simplicity is the key.

So there you were, sitting in native garb and sipping tea with the tribal chief. Your team sergeant has just gotten done establishing rapport and there is a great possibility that a strong working relationship will develop from his efforts.
Your team leader is conversing as best he can in the native tongue, makes a couple of mistakes, but the tribal elders are impressed that he has made an attempt to talk with them rather than to them and has done so in their own language. The tribal chief, in good faith, attempts to speak to you in your language and screws it up. You, nodding and holding back your laughter, can't wait to correct the cheif's errors , embarass the hell out of him making him loose face in front of his men, and just set back any possibility of a good working relationship a decade. Nice job! So where do you think you will be working tomorrow? That is if you and your team don't get your asses shot off as you attempt to gracefully leave the tribal compound behind being dragged ignominiously by your team sergeant who has jerked you off your feet when he grabbed you by the scruff of your sorry ass neck. Did you learn something else today?

I have learned some new lessons and re-learned some old ones since the early days when a couple of us were trying to figure out how to keep from crashing the internet.
1. Don't ban the Team Sergeant - even joking around.
2. Good G2 can come from the most unlikely sources.
3. Being an admin is like having the Hammer of Thor.
4. None of us are as computer savvy as we think nor is the graphical interface as intuitive as they claim.
5. Dan is a genius.
6. AM's user name is actually a well-deserved title.
7. The Colonel Sir has time-delay ass-kicking powers, you won't even realize what happened until two days later walking down the street.
8. There are some good people on the internet - mostly members here.
9. Kyo has skills and the patience of Job.
10. There are a lot of freakin' lawyers in the world.
11. SF's future is in good hands.
12. Clever rarely is when not among peers.
13. Any Glock is better than any not.
14. My Brothers are loyal to a fault and as merciless as Leonidas when you step on your peepee - until they decide you've had enough.
15. Teammates are forever.
16. We know a little something about this shit. And we'll share it if you don't come late, last or light.
17. Good people have good friends.
18. There are a lot of stupid people on the internet.
19. KG thinks he writes like I talk. Damn yankee should be so lucky.
20. Never use a librarian as an example.
Kyobanim

In my time here I've learned that:
1. Gray is a color that a some people here should strive to be, but never achieve. Mostly because thier ass is red from some Admin chewing on it.
2. And some people couldn't shut up if their lips were stapled shut.

This is heresy! Blasphemy even!au contraire...had Hector not slain his running buddy, Achilles would have spent most of the Trojan War brooding over a slave gurl (Briseis) taken by Agamemnon...to avenge his best friend (Patroculus), Achilles went on the war path, killing Hector and dragging the corpse around Troy...later, Paris got lucky with an arrow (guided by Apollo) and Achilles checked out of the net...

Hey, Brother Medic, is the last line of this really true?
PALLAS ATHENA
Pallas Athena was the Greek goddess of wisdom, truth, art, science and peace. She also served in Atlantis under the Goddess Vesta in the 'Temple of Truth.' She is often portrayed wearing armour and is associated with the triumph of will and reason over brute force and ignorance.

I've learned not to piss off Razor.
Or medics.
I've been here just a short while but I've learned most of what was posted above as well as:
1. It's pretty easy to pick out a 15 year old who didn't read the stickies
2. Crying about the dime sized blister you got on your first 4 mile ruckmarch that took you over an hour to finish will only kill any credibility you didn't have in the first place
3. I read Team Sergeant's posts at the position of Parade Rest.
4. It's even easier to pick out a 40 year old who didn't read the stickies
5. I'm not the only one with a dark sense of humor
6. There is much to be learned if you just take the time to read
7. Posers wear a Scarlet Letter around here
8. Most anyone worth a damn at knife making is a member here
9. Just one idiot with an affiliation to the Armor and Cavalry Corps can make me professionally embarrassed in less than a sentence
10. You can learn about Greek mythology in an "I learned..." thread
Jack Moroney (RIP)
05-15-2007, 05:38
From reading posts on this forum several things have been confirmed.
1. Lessons learned are still mistakes revisited
2. Bullshit at the speed of light is still bullshit
3. Medics know things
4. I am older not wiser
5. I would rather sit down face to face with folks and talk things out rather than try to compose a sentence that fails to adequately convey my intent.
6. I still feel humbled to be in the presence of those that have served before me, with me and that have picked up the torch for me.
The biggest thing I have learned is:
1. I don't know nearly as much as I should about the world around me (ie. politics/government), medicine (be it tactical or clinical), the military (all branches), the list goes on but these are the top three.
2. If you want a reading list that will really make you think about things, cruise the books and recommendations threads.
3. Quiet professionals are just that, very quiet and very professional.
4. Selflessness is a cardinal trait of a warrior. It shows here daily.
5. Col Moroney should write a book, and if I'm lucky enough to find a copy it will be dog eared and thread bear in about a week.
6. Don't mess with SF medics.
7. I would kill for all of Crip's study material when he's done.:lifter
8. If you are not an SF medic or you don't know Crip personally don't say jack about how long he's been in the pipeline. If you do prepare for incoming fire and it will be effective.

1. When a Quiet Professional calls you his friend he means just that.
2. Colonel Moroney is wiser, not older.
3. When you think you have learned your lesson stop thinking, you haven’t learned.
4. The SFQC is designed to teach SF Candidates what they need to know to get to a team not what they need to know to be a valuable team member.
5. Your future team is your priority in the SFQC, not graduating. Graduation will take care of itself if your priorities are right.
6. It is amazing how much one can learn when you read more and post less.
7. When you find yourself in a hole with one or more of the Quiet Professionals stop digging.
8. People know things you dont. If you listen they will teach you.
9. I have friends I didn’t even know I had and I am thankful for them.
And probably the single most profound thing I can pass on to future SF candidates:
10. There is no "G-2" to be had on the 2-way range, stop relying on it to get by. Learn your damn job.

Other things I have learned on this board:
1. If you could combine the talents and intellects of just these 5 people you would have the most effective soldier on the planet - COL Jack, TS, Bill Harsey, TR, and COL Rocky Farr.
2. There is a brotherhood in SF that runs very deep, something that QPs recognize in each other, but can't verbalize very well.
3. Gunner John is an over educated Redneck, a Bill Harsey wannabe, but a good man, and a great source for bullet launchers.
4. Do not drink with SGM C. unless you are ready for the physical and mental bruising that will ensue.
5. Dougie is the Team Sergeant's chogey boy, and BrianH is the SGMs backup.
6. Your crank and track shoes are a bad combination, very bad.
7. :munchin is a need to know smiley, and TS/SCI-Cosmic is not sufficient clearance to be 'on the list'.

2. Dan is the MAN.
3. He has the name "The Reaper" for a reason. Don't mess with him unless you want to be squished like a bug.
4. I've learned a lot from NDD. - Go read his mindset and training threads... then re-read them every four to six months... until your dead.
5. Study up before you ask Longrange1947 a question on sniper systems, shooting, or long range rifles. Then if he gives you the answer, go back to studying as he has given you more info than you can possibly digest in one conversation... Re-read his response again 10 days later because you missed something.... trust me.
