HK P2000SK Problem

I recently purchased a P2000SK LEM in .40 S&W for concealed carry. I have about 300 rounds through it so far – about 250 rds. Speer Lawman FMJ and another 50 or so of my carry ammo, 180 gr. Winchester Ranger JHP.

The gun shoots well and is easy to control, although the trigger pull is very long compared to the 1911s that I’m used to. One problem though – on almost every magazine with the Lawmans, it is failing to chamber the last round in the magazine. Each time, the round is wedged nose up in the chamber, then drops free easily when I rack the slide. The malfunction occurs with both factory magazines, and the weapon is clean and well-lubed. There have been no other malfunctions, and this does not occur with the Rangers.

I am stumped. Any ideas what might be going on? :confused:

IMO, Sounds like your slide is moving very fast and the Mag spring is not moving the rounds fast enough. It's doing it on the last round because the spring is at its "least" coiled state, less tension.

How to fix it is another question, putting more tension on the spring may cause other problems. Stretching the spring is out of the question.

Try using the FMJ Winchester ammo or Federal ammo and see how that works.

BTW, I don’t have any pistols that are LEM models. In fact if it says LEM it’s a warning label for me to not purchase the gun…….;)

As a sub-compact, it is going to be a compromise over the operating systems of the full-sized models, and consequently, potentially less reliable.

I would not recommend the LEM trigger, I love my DA/SA P2000.

That sort of malfunction would normally be the result of inadequate mag spring pressure or the slide moving too fast. Do you have any full length USP Compact or P2000 mags to try? You might see if Wolff makes the springs for those mags and complementary recoil springs. I doubt if HK will be much help, but you could contact them and see.

If I were you, I would not carry the Speers until I had sorted the problem out, and would not carry that pistol with the Rangers either, unless I had put at least 100 rounds of them through the weapon and your carry mags without a stoppage.

I checked with Wolff, and they apparently do not make mag springs for the SK. Luckily, though, one of our members PM'd me a thread on this very topic over at hk-pro, and it appears that many others have experienced this same malfunction.

I called HK using my best German (kidding) and they said it is due to defective mag springs, which they will replace free of charge. :lifter

Oh, and they even offered to let me pet their monkey. :D

I will report back on the eventual resolution of this, since I know TS will be tormented by the knowledge that an HK somewhere, anywhere, needs help.

Funny, it has parts commonality with the USP, and is purported to be an improved version.:D

Noted that it is not the P2000, it is the P2000SK.

I stand corrected on HK's customer service. Are they requiring you to send the mags back for the spring replacement or are they trusting a Verdammt Americaner to install them properly?

At first I hated the LEM trigger on my P2000. Finally it was through one of the QP's during a weekend training seminar that he explained how to overcome the pull length of the LEM trigger.

It's fairly obvious, but takes some practice. Only allow the trigger out to it's reset point, then follow through with the secondary and subsequent shots. It does take practice, however you'll find that the reset is incredibly short and with practice you'll not have to allow the trigger to it's full stopping point before follow through is exercised.

As for the failures, I haven't a clue. TS and TR are more versed and have given great advice. If it eats and spits the Ranger SXT's, then just stick with what works. Personally I tend to think that sub compact models of any handgun are somewhat of a design flaw in and of its self (I hope that makes sense). Again, I'm no expert, but I've seen more than my fair share of 3" barrel 1911's that wont feed or extract most of the time without a couple of trips to the custom shop or a qualified gunsmith. I just dont believe John Moses Browning ever intended the 1911 to be any shoter in barrel length than 5" without a bushing. ;)
