"Mini-Smatchet"?

That's like "Honest Lawyer"

:D

Looks like we may have an honest lawyer. Yes, that is a Mini Smatchet, Col. Rex Applegate approved. He had me make the prototype so he could see what it looked like. This was for finer work, like making wide entry hole with a knife that carried without much notice, Boker Knives in Germany has the rights to produce that just as Col. Rex Applegate agreed to.

Ok then, its like saying "breast reduction" - it don't fit. SMATCHETS! are supposed to be BIG! LOL

Bill Harsey

Yes Smatchets are BIG! The one pictured here from WW Two is a single sided edge, the ones I prototyped for Applegate are all full double edged with the exception of two prototypes where I put very agressive wood cutting saw teeth on a section of one side.

Smatchet(s) of the Day

Bill Harsey

Those look like the Al Mar produced Smatchets. I prototyped those for Col. Applegate.

In the picture above of the Al Mar Smatchets, it appears that there is a cord running through a hole in the ricasso just behind the top plunge line. I didn't see a reference to this hole or cord in "Get Tough". Do you know its purpose, Mr. Harsey?

Bill Harsey
08-06-2004, 17:37
Razor, Very good seeing on your part. I know the purpose of the hole that the cord runs thru and the cord doesn't belong in it. Col. Applegate directed me to always place a hole on one side of the smatchet ricasso. This was so the user could , if they choose, keep one side as sharp as possible and use the other edge for rough work that may damage the edge. The hole was there for them to use as a marker. There is no more to it than that. We never intended for a cord to be run thru it. (edited for spelling, a lot easier here than on a knife blade...)

NousDefionsDoc

I can't really see if those have the thong hole in the handle. There are instructions in Get Tough! about how to loop the thong so you don't lose your SMATCHET! while chopping.

I can see no useful purpose in running that cord through the indicator hole in the blade. The ones that did that are obviously Novatos!

I believe that all that could legally be made from the original design, have been made.

Wonder if a variation in material or dimensions would be legal?

Occasionally, one of the COL's pattern may pop up on the market, I suppose.

My instinct tells me the first smatchet shown could be very rare. If i directed the attention of one of my expert collectors there, I think the auction would be over, he'd snag it. The price on the second one, reserve at 400 dollars is also very good. Anyone here who wants to collect something very rare should look at the first two. Interesting. Edited to ad, the first one is a steal anywhere near or above double the reserve price.

I apologize in advance for resurrecting an old thread, but I didn't see the utility in creating a brand new one.

Needless to say I was impressed to see Mr Harsey on this site and have admired his work for some time. I still have almost the entire first 3 years of "Fighting Knives" magazines at home and recall the article where he and the Colonel displayed the Smatchet Mr Harsey made.

I had searched all over for one of my own, but had to wait until 2001 when Boker began producing them. I bought a limited edition Smatchet but figured it was too nice to use. When Boker released the "regular" version (non-numbered) I snapped one up and was disappointed with the scales. The ones on the ltd edition are very nice micarta, but the regular Smatchet has smooth, slippery plastic scales that are riveted on.

So... my question is for Mr Harsey: Do you sir know of a place where I can buy micarta scales and screws that will fit the Smatchet? I have contacted Boker and they do not respond. If I sent you the knife could you make some for it? And also, would it be too much to ask for some small serrations on the first two inches of one side?

Thanks in advance for your consideration.

Bill, right up front I will say I do not remember doing this, but Chuck Karwan says I did. I think it was in 1987 when we came back from Okinawa to go to a course and I took leave and went down to see Chuck. We went over and the COL let me look at his collection. Chuck says I picked up a Smatchett, asked about it and told the COL he should make them. Shortly after that he had you come up with the prototypes. Again I do not remember this, but Chuck swears it happens. Also didn't Buck make them too? I think the one the COL gave me (sadly no longer mine) was made by Buck.

Apparently Buck made the knife for a company named Wells Creek Knife & Gun Works.

These were what we called smatchets (although the pic is only a repro for a presentation plaque); all the others--like the ones shown on this thread--we called bolos. My personal favorite was a bolo I picked up in the Philippines made from a piece of an old car spring. Po-tay-toe...po-tah-toh. ;)

Hey! don't knock on car part knives they have some high quality metals in junk yards that just need some "de"-rusting. I have a couple knives made from folded leaf springs and flattened high quality airplane bolts, just takes some heat and hammer as Mr. Harsey will tell you all about.

and very cool knives posted. I like the no non-sense full tang look ready to chop wood or grip&rip for battle.
