Yep, I completely understand what the sergeant is saying. While the shooting was a terrible thing, is it a greater tragedy to have 32 people killed in one day, or one person die each day for 32 days? Is there a difference? I have no doubt that at least one innocent person in our country is murdered nearly every day. Are the lives of the VT students more important to our country than the life of a taxi driver that was killed in a gang-related crossfire, or the woman who was found stabbed to death, both occuring here in Colorado Springs in the last three weeks? Why didn't we lower the flag for them as well? Should the nation as a whole carry more sorrow for the students' deaths than for the thousands that die on our roads and highways each year? Do sheer numbers determine our grief response now? Seems to be. I guess the rules for flying the flag at half-staff in the U.S. Code are just suggestions.

On another note, where were the cries of the environmentalists when a crowd at VT yesterday released all those rubber balloons into the air? No concern for the birds, fish or mammals that might die from trying to eat the colorful shards of rubber?
