Since the "Best unground movies" thread was a success, I thought a "Best 80's Rock bands" thread would prove just as entertaining.
Although the obvious bands will be mentioned, I'll start with a couple of rather "unknown" bands. Songs can also be included. WARNING: If your favorite songs are gay be prepared for some ribbing and funny face icons. :D
Two of my favorite 80's bands that are rather unknown.
1: Bullet Boys
2. Mr. Big: "Addicted to that Rush" "How can you do what you do " Had enough" "30 days in the hole "
Name yours !!

Heart absolutely rocks !!! I saw them at the Cumberland County Arena in 1986.
I have their live CD at House of Blues......................
I also saw Night Ranger here twice for free !! Once at a "Chili Fest" and another time at a 4th of July venue on the river.
"When you close your eyes" Jack Blades is one great front man and guitarist.
Here's a great medley of their songs: Turn up the speakers and enjoy

I knew I could count on you to bring up Journey and Guns & Roses.
Steve Perry is possibly one of the most talented front men in the business. Even his solo albums "Street Talk" and "For the love Strange medicine" are fantastic ablums. He's also got a "Greatest Hits" with some unreleased songs that rock !!!
Motley Crue is one of those bands, that irregardless of their antics, is one of the most fun concerts you'll ever attend. I saw them a couple of summers ago with a female drummer that kicked TL's ass ! "Dr. Feelgood" was their greatest tune.

Now that's a list of Rock !!!!
Whitesnake with David Coverdale, Vivian Cambell, Tommy Aldrige et al was a great concert ! I saw Whitesnake last summer at a small venue here in Kentucky and they have not lost a single note, riff, or swing ! I actually stood next to David Coverdales girlfriend in the front. Some security guy's walked her down and placed a stool next to me and she sat next to me. She did give me a stick of gum but nothing else..................Did I mention she was hot ?
Holly,
I still have the first BOSTON album in it's original cover. I also have the Lynard Skynard album with the "FIRE" around the band on the cover. That was shortly before they died in the plane crash and the album was then changed to the plain cover without flames.
I wonder how much I could get for it ?
Judas Priest is one of those bands that defined metal before metal actually became metal ! "Heading out to the highway" and "British Steel" Fun while cruising down the I-75 in the new Audi S4
Somehow I missed the 80s rock period.
The only thing I remember is listening to "Take a Slow Boat to China" every 15 minutes for 30 days while stuck under a GP medium in 100 deg heat.
Holly,
I still have the first BOSTON album in it's original cover.

I ran into Dee Snider on the way to work one day at the corner of Broadway and 57th.
Boston is really more a '70s arena rock band than an '80s rock band. Boston came out in 1976 and Don't Look Back in 1978. Third Stage came out in 1986, but other than "Amanda" they didn't really have much of an impact in the 1980s.
If I had to sit around and decide what were the best rock bands of the 1980s, I'd probably come up with one list, but if I had to honestly say which rock bands I was listening to in the 1980s, I'd come up with a slightly more embarassing other list. First half of the 80s was pretty much Top 40 - just as much Falco and Duran Duran and Bon Jovi as Def Leppard or Quiet Riot or the Crüe or the Scorpions. I probably came of age musically when I began coming of age pretty much everywhere else - after graduating high school and unable to afford college, working odd jobs before starting junior college. But then it was almost like turning back the clock, as my "80s rock bands" were as much if not more 70s than 80s: AC/DC, Bad Company, Boston, Black Sabbath, Lynyrd Skynyrd. The more I "progressed" musically, the further back I seemed to go: Beggar's Banquet-era Stones, Hendrix, the Doors, Cream, etc. More blues rock and then more blues: Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Howlin' Wolf.
Then 1987 rolled in and Appetite for Destruction changed the world of rock. That album alone, and the accompanying tours, seals it in my mind for best 80s rock band, even as I give honorable mentions to Metallica and the Crüe.
The 1980s ended with a bit of synthesis, though. On a snowy evening in December 1989 in Atlantic City, I saw the Rolling Stones in concert, along with a few special guests. Mick was joined for the "Salt of the Earth" duet not by Keith Richards, but by Axl Rose. The climax was a performance of "Little Red Rooster" by the Stones, Eric Clapton, Axl, Izzy Stradlin, and John Lee Hooker.
RL: Sir, I mentioned Boston b/c the 80's were when I was introduced to "that" album.
I am in awe of You, that You got to see the above mentioned LIVE! Good times indeed.

SDIVER:
Metallica. I actually thought their "Black" album was pretty damn smashing ! "Enter Sandman" that was and is a great tune.
Metallica has a lot to recommend it, but it was definitely a big step towards radio-friendly acceptability. In their defense, though, radio was more accepting of stuff than it was is the 1980s.
Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets were the quintessential Metallica albums of the 1980s (though as noted above I was a latecomer to them). ...And Justice for All was basically the end of one era but the seeds of another. "One" got a fair amount of MTV rotation, broadening Metallica's audience at a time, when, in the wake of Guns N' Roses, listeners were looking for more edge and less Poison. For me, at least, "One" ranks as one of the most influential rock songs of the 1980s.
Of course, now I can't hear the song "Master of Puppets" without thinking of the pledge roundup in the movie "Old School."

TOTO was and is one of those bands that keep on coming with great music from great musicians. Toto originated as a bunch of studio musicians who started playing together and found that their strengths made for a band that could transition from songs like "99" to more hard hard hitting like "Hold the Line" In later years they proved themselves worthy of the AMA award for best single with "Africa" and "Rossanna" Then touting their strengths as the they were awarded the privilege of the soundtrack to the movie "DUNE"
If you've listened to Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, or even Patti Labelle, you've heard one or more of the TOTO guys playing background guitar, drums, percusssion, keyboards, and vocals. At one point even John Williams son was the front man for TOTO. John Willliams needs no introduction if you've ever watched a decent movie.
David Paich, Steve Porcaro, Jeff Porcaro, Mike Porcaro, Jeff Williams, et al have all made this band one of my favorites since their first album. Some of their music is simply great melody and some is haunting with a taste of hard riffs and strong backup by drumer Jeff Porcaro(Now deceased). Steve Lukather is probably one of the greatest guitarist that almost know one knows his name, if your not a TOTO fan. Although the lineup has changed in recent years, the band is one of most inspiring musically to hit the scene in the 80's. With Bobby Kimball back at the mic they are a sell out band even this year in their current tour.

Ratt !! There's a band that lost their way, but not without some great hits and great concerts. I actually saw Ratt when Bon Jovi was the opening act at Cumberland County Arena during my stay at Bragg. My how times have changed for Bon Jovi and Ratt.
Foreigner was another of my favorites. I've seen them also when they opened with Styx for the Journey tour 3 years ago. Lue, the lead singer also had some of his own hits that were pretty decent. Actually I'm a big Reba fan !! I just watched CMT's "Greats" honoring her and it was great. Did you see Martina and Kelly Clarkson sing that duet ? They were the best part of the night, other than Faith Hill in the see through dress.
I saw Reba with Linda Davis back in 95 and it was one of the best performances that I have ever witnessed.

You got that right !!! Their a unique approach to music, let alone the rock genre.
They were here last 4th of July at the Blue Ash fesitval for free !! I didn't even know till one of my friends called to invite me to come along to the festival for the show. HOLY SHIT ! TOTO for free "I'm In' They were great and that was the day I found the website the new album. If your going to buy some Toto, then get the ones you like but don't miss the latest from last year.
I can't believe nobody has brought up Dire Straits yet. Mark Knopfler rocked then and still does.
A couple of nights ago, during a study break, I showed a buddy from my class (a wee youngster at 21) the Money for Nothing video that came out in 1983. He had never seen it and I think could barely understand how it was a revolutionary video at the time. After that, I showed him Tom Petty's Don't come around here no more video, A-Ha's Take on Me video and a few others. It was pretty cool; my buddy grew up in the sticks in PA and never had MTV until he came to Bragg.

Van Halen....................what else needs to be said ? The mere mention of the name VH speaks for its self, and not without standing that TWO front men were widely accepted by the MS audience, some even accepted Sammy Hagar as a better fit, and I cannot disagree. The success of VH was as great with Sammy as it was with David Lee Roth, if not even more so.
I've enjoyed concerts with David Lee Roth, Sammy Hagar, and Gary Cherone and not once did the band let us down. DLR is such a manical ego maniac that he cost himself his career and is now seen as the puppet master in Vegas, and that's even over for him.
Jeff Scott Soto can sing the tunes as good as Sammy and DLR, but he's taken up with Journey as their new front man. Let's see if VH hits the road as announced earlier this year, but it's already looking like a wash because of DLR's demands.

......Flock of Seagulls!......
U2's best had to be Joshua Tree and I thought Rattle and Hum was great, too (try explaining what "rattle" and "hum" is to German Comm troops!)
I remember those videos, too. The "Take on me" got a bunch of awards when it came out and I always thought it was original.
Flock of Seagulls. They were around when I graduated from High Schoo. What about Missing Persons? Dale, the female lead singer with the clear soupbowl bra!
I grew up less then an hours drive from the Long Island Arena. Every Group that plays Madison Square Garden always plays the LI Arena. I saw just about every Group mentioned here and then some in concert. I remember chucking away tickets for Groups like ZZ Top, Fleet wood Mac, Rush and Van Halen just because I saw them so many times already.
Best live performance IMO, Bruce Springstien and Pink Floyd. No one came close to those two in concert.
Worst one live, Not all but one Fleet wood Mac concert. Sound was so bad the place just about emptied out in the first hour. Jethro Tull came close but he was just drunk which is SOP for a rocker once in awhile;)

HEADPINS. An excellent 'Pop/Metal' band that I saw in a bar in El Paso in 1983. Their music can be found on Napster.
I saw Jethro Tull in 1991 with some buddies and Ian Anderson took a break in the middle of a flute solo (it seems so weird to type that) to eat a steak on stage. He finished his filet migon and went back at it.

I saw VH two years ago in Hershey, Pa at the stadium just next to the Hershey Chocolate Gift shop (Cant remember the name of the stadium) There's an amusement park right next to it also. It might just be called "Hershey Park Stadium.
At that time Eddy had just been cleared of cancer and looked like death warmed over on stage. Never the less, it was a great show as usual and their stage presence was just as spectacular as any other time I had seen them.
Wolfgan Van Halen, Eddy's son is supposed to be playing the bass guiatar. I guess he's all grown up and plays well enough to tour with them. I haven't been able to find any info on why MA is not sporting the bass guitar this time around. I'll miss his Jack Daniels bottle shaped guitar !!

Now that is one great video find !! I saw her on an VH1 thing a'ma'bob about 80's rockers just this past year and she looks even better today than she did in the video !! If that video were made today, she'd not be wearing torn blue jeans and jacket, but rather a see through skirt and fishnet top...............that would be worth the price of admission !
Ozzy actually looked fairly healthy in that video. That's something we wont see again.

One of my first albums was "Duke". This music changed the way I looked at music, along with Supertramp (70's band). Before Genisis, I was just into Hard Rock which was my older brother's albumcollection growing up. I was also partial to "ABACAB" and "Three Sides Live".
Danny Elfman was and is still a secret underground genius of music. He is one of the most sought after composers in Hollywood for movie soundtrack work.
Maybe my eyes have missed it through all of these postings, but The Cars were a unique and innovative band. Eliot Easton's gutar playing is so different than any other. Plus, he's a lefty.

Geez, I forgot about The Cars. My sister got their first album and I saw the pictures of Ric Ocasek and thought, "Who's the freak?" And he married Paula Porizkova, proof that deals with the Devil do exist. They did make a good album, tho.
How about "Wall of Voodoo" with "Mexican Radio" and "Far Side of Crazy"??

Anyone who's been through AIMC is a rush fan. YYZ.
Did anyone mention Cheap Trick? A former co-worker of mine produced some of their music. Saw them a few years ago in San Fran at the Oracle conference, along with that Steve Perry / Journey doppleganger.
I can remember vividly one summer hearing The Cars and Cheap Trick on about every other song.
Tidbit... I had dinner with Tommy Heath from "Tommy Tutone" (Jenny/Jenny 867-5309) a few years ago (along with the aforementioned co-worker). At the time, he was a Java programmer and database administrator for Portland General Electric. The Enron scandal was announced the day before. He was concerned about his 401k.

Are you referring the Steve Augeri ? Actually Steve A was with Journey for 8 years after Steve P left the band after hip surgery and stunted the "Trial By Fire" tour. Steve did pretty darn well as their front man for Journey fans. He's now on his own and Jeff Scott Soto is their lead man.
Although I love Steve Perry, Steve A was just as a good at hitting those notes and I've actually listened to some tracks that Steve A has sung on and I cannot tell the difference if I'm not aware that he is actually the one singing.

No "Sir" here. Just a "working man"!
Saw Rush for "Grace Under Pressure" tour and again for "Power Windows" tour. I play guitar since about 1982, so you think you're going to see some incredible Guitar and Bass playing (which you do!). Then you end up watching Peart with your jaw on the floor the whole concert! Truly Amazing!
Back in those days, bands could be a dissapointment live if they couldn't pull off thier big album sound live. Rush always played perfect, and sounded perfect back then. It is much easier for bands now due to better sound equipment (reactive electronics), and digital affects. You are right Holley. Rush is among the all time kings of rock!

Neil Pert was one of those drummers that left you awe inspired after seeing him live ! Being a drummer myself since the 6th grade, I was blessed by having many drum instuctors that replicated the styles of Neil Pert, Jeff Porcaro and Larrie Londin (Elvis's drummer) To this day I still have to practice my chops to do songs like "Rossana" and "Pamela" from Toto. Those triplet, shuffle, and 4x4 bass drum rythems are still difficult to maintain during playing the song with a band. I'm playing set of Tama's with a Gibralter cage mouting system with a mixed bag of symbols and two high hats. One a cable high hat that is on the right side of the kit when my arm is tired from the cross over high hat.
Rush with Neil Pert was one of my influences early on and I can't think of any better drummer to have listened to while my young musical chops were being improved. Along with Jeff Porcaro of Toto.

Ted Nugent shares, I would guess, similar political beliefs of most of us on this forum. Wonder if we could get him to chime in on RKBA :) He may not agree with the entirety of ths thread though. "Cat Scratch Fever" is still played by most cover bands around here on the weekends.
Rick Allen is to be applauded for his recovery efforts and being part of the band with one arm and two feet at the skins. Yes, he's gotta be one of the hardest working drummers in the business. I saw him with Def Leapard just this past July 13th with the Journey tour in Atlanta, Ga. After seeing Dean Castronova with Journey and a full round house of drums, symbols, and other percussive items it was kinda hard to watch Rick Allen keep the beat with Def Leapard. :( Rick played as prescribed to the DL songs, but it was obvious that the drum measures were lacking as compared to Dean Castronova who utilized every single drum and symbol and percussive item on his kit. With one arm Rick Allen does a GREAT job backing up the band, but he is limited to what he can do with electronics and both feet supplementing the riffs with strides and crashes of the symbols. He's one great drummer to have pulled this off for so many years and he got a warm welcome after he did his drum solo that was spectacular !!! But, in the end, the ability of drummer with one hand is just that, a limited ability.
I like him none the less !

TR,
You have to give props to a crew of guys that will stand by their brother/ teammate too. Def Leppard could have thrown him to the side but, to their credit, they stuck with their bud and drove on.

As a guitar player, and a lover of music, Stewart Copeland has always been one of my favorites. I played in a band when I was in 2nd RGR BN in the late 80's that was composed of all rangers from that unit. We played alot of Police stuff and I loved it. Ditto ! When ETS'd from the service I purchased a kit of Yamaha and started playing with band called "Theatre Of Pain" a Motley Crue cover band and gigged at the local bars, clubs and occasionally even opened for bigger acts at a place called "Roscoe's" I played with a guitarist that was possibly the best guitarist that I have played with and it drove all of us to improve up to his level. I practiced more and more and harder than ever just to keep him smiling as he looked back when a riff was performed flawlessly. His smiles and his energy gave us all the type of motivation to be better musicians.
