I have lived in Europe, enjoyed the culture and people but after reading Tony Blankley's book "The Wests Last Chance" I tend to agree that our relationship with the EU presents the easiest point of entry. Most area studies do not get in to the cultural clashes that occur at a lower level.

Interesting article - and, given the current events with terrorism in Scotland - more important than ever.

The extremist problem in Europe is only likely to get worse because of the declining birth rates. As a result, in order to fill the labor gap, countries like France, Netherlands and the U.K. are having to let scores of N. African and Middle Eastern immigrants into the country. While most of them are honest, hard working people; not all of them are. Additionally, if they live in economically poor conditions, they're more inclined to adopt radical ideals, and less likely to assimilate. The European solution? Provide incentives for making more babies, and keep your immigrant population happy with a thriving job market. Of course, depending on which country we're talking (and they're sources of GDP), this is more easily said than done.

Attack at US Embassy in Vienna Thwarted
October 1, 2007 - 11:51am
VIENNA, Austria (AP) - A Bosnian who tried to enter the U.S. Embassy in Vienna with a backpack filled with explosives, nails and Islamic literature was arrested Monday after the bag set off a metal detector and the man fled on foot, authorities said.
Police sealed off the neighborhood as a precaution and shut down or rerouted nearby bus and tram lines. Officers patrolled the area with bomb-sniffing dogs.
The suspect was described only as a 42-year-old native of Bosnia-Herzegovina who now lives in the province of Lower Austria, which encircles most of the capital. Police said they made the arrest a short distance from the embassy building in a neighborhood where security is tight.
Vienna police spokeswoman Michaela Raz said explosives experts were examining the contents of the backpack.
"There were a lot of nails in that bag. Had it exploded, it would have had an enormous shrapnel effect," said Doris Edelbacher, of Austria's federal counterterrorism office.
The explosives resembled hand grenades, she told reporters, but that munitions experts were still working to determine whether the device had been properly rigged to explode.
The suspect spoke broken German and appeared to ramble during an initial interrogation, Edelbacher said.
It was unclear how far he made it into the embassy. Public broadcaster ORF, citing unidentified officials, reported that a metal detector sounded an alarm as the man was passing through security checks and that he fled immediately.
The nature of the Islamic material he allegedly was carrying also was unclear.
Embassy officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
Last month, authorities arrested three people _ all Austrian citizens of Arab origin in their 20s _ in connection with a video posted online in March that had threatened Austria and Germany with attacks if they did not withdraw their military personnel from Afghanistan.
One of the suspects was released several days later for lack of evidence.
On Friday, the Interior Ministry said it found a list of politicians circulating online as potential targets for attacks. The individuals were notified, but authorities said there were no indications that any of them were ever in danger.

In countries like France,Germany,Austria and The United Kingdom muslim radicals are not becoming a problem; They are the problem and they must be nullified and not appeased. In the United States they are waiting for the opportunity to inflict the maximum amount of destruction on us infidels, so be prepared for the worst possible event you can think of.Since we can never convert radical muslims,we must eliminate them one way or another. This is just my opinion...Regards,tom kelly

And my fear is a Beslan made in the USA! And no... I do not think local, county, state, and federal LE are prepared for such an occurrence.
Nothing to worry about. When a Democrat is elected next year all muslims will love the US. There will be no more terrorist attacks.....
Wait, was that guy from Bosnia? Didn't we.....

Belgium foils al-Qaeda jailbreak
Trabelsi said he had met Bin Laden
Fourteen people have been arrested in Belgium after authorities foiled a plot to free an al-Qaeda member arrested in September 2001, officials say.
The suspects, detained in police raids, were described as Islamic militants.
They were seeking to free Tunisian Nizar Trabelsi, jailed in Belgium for planning to attack US targets.
An official said the plot involved explosives and that security was being stepped up in the capital over fears of a "possible attack".
Belgium hosts the main European Union institutions and Nato headquarters, as well as a raft of multi-national companies.

Four Madrid bomb convicts cleared
Spain's Supreme Court has overturned the conviction of four people found guilty of involvement in the Madrid train bombings in 2004.
The four were among 21 people convicted last year over the attacks, which killed 191 people.
The court also upheld the acquittal of an Egyptian suspected of masterminding the attacks, because he had already been convicted of the offence in Italy.
However it convicted and jailed one of those originally found not guilty.
Egyptian man Rabei Osman had been cleared of mass murder in the bombings at a trial in Madrid in October.
As he had already been sentenced to eight years in prison in Italy, the court ruled he could not be convicted again for the same crime.
Changing the course of history
The Madrid bombing - in which 10 rucksack bombs tore through four packed commuter trains on 11 March 2004 - was Europe's worst terror attack since the 1988 Lockerbie bombing.
Analysts say the attacks changed the course of Spanish politics because in an election three days later voters ditched a conservative government that at first blamed the bombs on the Spanish separatist group Eta.
Spanish investigators say the accused were part of a local Islamist militant group inspired by al-Qaeda, but had no direct links to the terror organisation.
They had acted to avenge the presence of Spanish troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, said investigators.

Don´t forget to mention the trial about the first western woman that became her own ied in Iraq. We put them in jail as well. A sad first.
Been present at both trials (and a few others) in a cp role, up close to the ´bad guys´.They weren´t that scary up close though, rather frail and small. Unbelievable such ´geeks´are capable of such monstrosities.

German raids on suspected terror cell supporters
BERLIN – Officials say German police carried out raids in three states searching for suspected supporters of a terror cell whose plans to attack U.S. targets in Germany were foiled last year.
Federal prosecutors' spokesman Frank Wallenta says police made no arrests during Thursday's raids on the residences of several people suspected of acquiring detonators for three alleged terror plotters.
The suspected plotters are now on trial. They are alleged to have operated as a German cell of the radical Islamic Jihad Union.
Wallenta declined to say Saturday where the raids had been carried out. Germany's Bild daily says they were in Baden-Wuerttemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Lower Saxony.

Belgium seems to be a pretty popular spot for these folks....or they are more dialed-in on their activities.
Belgium detains al-Qaeda suspects
Belgian police say they have detained 14 people suspected of being members of the al-Qaeda network.
They include a man believed to have been about to launch a suicide attack, officials said.
Federal prosecutor Johan Delmulle said police did not know where the suspected suicide attack was to target.
The detentions come as a two-day European Union leaders' summit was due to start in Brussels on Thursday afternoon.
Mr Delmulle said that the suspected attack could have been carried out in Pakistan or Afghanistan, "but it can't be ruled out that Belgium or Europe could have been the target".
The man suspected of planning a suicide attack had "received the green light to carry out an operation from which he was not expected to come back" and "had said goodbye to his loved ones, because he wanted to enter paradise with a clear conscience," Mr Delmulle quoted investigators as saying.
'No choice'
"This information, linked to the fact that the EU summit is being held in Belgium at the moment, left us with no choice but to intervene today," he added.
A total of 242 police officers carried out 16 raids in Brussels and one in the eastern city of Liege, officials said.
The police investigation, described as the most important anti-terror inquiry in Belgium, targeted an alleged group of Belgian Islamists believed to have been trained in the Afghanistan and Pakistan region, officials said, according to the AFP agency.
