Tony Snow's Colon Cancer Spreads To Liver

LOS ANGELES -- President George W. Bush told White House Spokesman Tony Snow on Tuesday to "stay strong," as he faces another battle with cancer.


The 51-year-old was diagnosed with colon cancer two years ago.


He had his colon removed and then underwent chemotherapy.

Doctors removed a cancerous growth near his pelvis Monday.

Bush said Snow called him Tuesday morning and told him his cancer was back and that it has spread to his liver.

Bush said he's looking forward to the day Snow returns to the White House. Snow is expected to remain in the hospital for about a week.

NBC4's Dr. Bruce Hensel said the condition can be very serious since the liver is the organ that metabolizes the body.

"It can be very serious, but in rare cases I have seen people recover from primary liver cancer. Liver cancer that comes from another place, it's unlikely. You can respond to treatment and do fairly well for a time," said Hensel.

Hensel said chemotherapy is usually used for treatment, but occasionally radiation is used. In rare cases, Hensel said a piece of the liver could be removed.

Hensel said that KNBC has partnered up with CVS/pharmacy, Hoag and Huntington Hospitals to give away free colorectal cancer screening tests. You can pick up the EZ test at any CVS pharmacy, Hensel said.

Unless the technology has changed since 2001 with the chemo or the angiogenic meds, that is textbook Stage 4 and he is a dead man walking.

And for that, I will be very sorry.

I liked Tony Snow's candor and fairness on Foxnews and his efforts to control the animals at the WH Press Conferences.

He is a great man with a positive attitude, and I wish him the very best luck in the biggest fight of his life.

Cancer is truly evil; it took my older brother and my Mom is grappling with it now.

Tony Snow was one of the best White Press Secretaries in recent memory. He'll be hard to replace. Best wishes, Mr. Snow.

Really sorry to hear the cancer has returned. I wish Mr Snow the best.

I have watched far too many relatives and friends die from it.

A friend called me two weeks ago to tell me his cancer has returned and it is inoperable. He flew to the big cancer clinic in Houston to have a lung removed. They tried but the surgeon backed out. During the pre-scope he discovered too much scar tissue from the radiation. The new tumor is near his heart on his bronchial path, the best hope was to remove a lung to access the tumor. He can't have radiation and chemo won't work. My brother-in-law, who lives in Europe, is stage 4 and being treated with some sort of new gene therapy and doing well. I asked my friend about this and he was told he is not eligible for the treatment in the USA. He isn't sick enough even though he is stage 4. Plus it is only offered under clinical testing and maybe only in Houston.

Snow plans to return to work on Monday

DAVIDSON, N.C. - White House Press Secretary Tony Snow, who will soon begin chemotherapy to fight a cancer recurrence, told fellow alumni at Davidson College that he feels great and plans to return to work Monday.


Snow, 51, has been on medical leave since announcing March 27 that a growth in his abdominal area was cancerous and had metastasized, or spread, to the liver.

"No, it doesn't mean I'm going to be gray, shriveled and in the fetal position," he told about 600 alumni and family members at a 30-year reunion Saturday. "To my classmates who think I'm going to lose my great hair, forget about it."

Snow had his colon removed in 2005 and underwent six months of chemotherapy after being diagnosed with colon cancer.

Snow graduated from Davidson in 1977. Davidson officials said he agreed to speak to students on Friday and alumni on Saturday, The Charlotte Observer reported.

During an impromptu question and answer session Saturday, Snow said he has become closer to God and his family because of the cancer.

"I am actually enjoying everything more than I ever have," he said. "God hasn't promised us tomorrow, but he has promised us eternity."
