The drop in lethality of issue 5.56mm from 10", 11.5", and 14" barrels is pretty well documented at this point, but I was wondering if anyone knows of any similar failures reported in other cartridges fired out of short barrels.

Do former eastern bloc countries face similar issues as us with the AKs-74u? Are there any merits to carbines chambered in 7.62x51mm?

We tend to blame the SS109 for poor performance out of short barrels, but putting any cartridge through a shorter barrel than intended must yield some drawbacks (to a degree). It would simply appear that the drawbacks for 5.56mm are higher than other calibers...but then maybe the drawbacks have only come to light because the 5.56 is the only rifle cartridge to see such heavy usage in carbines. Anyone have any definite answers?
