I had a buddy who was an 11H. When he was a new private he was on a TOW range where they were firing live missiles. One of the TOWs did something similar to this, it launched but the sustainer motors never fired. The missile went a short way downrange and then crashed. There was apparently a shortage of NCOs at the range because a LT took a few PVTs down and BROUGHT THE MISSILE BACK! Apparently he wanted to mount it in the CP. They took this live missile back to the ammo point and placed it inside with several other unfired live missiles. The battalion commander showed up a short time later to check on the range and when he saw what was in the ammo point his reaction was along the lines of "HOLY $&%*$*% %&%$." EOD was called and the unfired ammo was removed. They spent a couple of hours sandbagging the ammo point and then EOD blew it in place. That LT is no longer serving.:D

TOW missle story number two...
1989, Grafenwoehr training area, night fire range, M901ITV, firing a live TOW II missle. The BN CDR, CO CDR, CSM, 1SG, and various entourages are present to watch the event.
They are watching from an additional firing point on the same firing line. The target is up, the gunner is tracking, he fires the missle. The missle launches, proceeds about 200M down range, then goes wild. The missle executes a nearly 90 degree verticle turn skyward, and starts arcing back toward the firing line.
Assholes and elbows moving in every direction! For a young PFC, this was a priceless moment. The missle impacted on the range opposite ours on the other side of the tank trail, about 400M behind us... NEATO. I nearly peed my pants laughing... guess you had to be there.:D
