Yeah, the Navy is playing such a big role in the GWOT right now....
Why did they give the job to Petraeus? I am sure there was an AF general who wanted to be in charge of the effort....

Anyone know there attitude's toward SOF units?
If I remember correctly, General Petraeus was in charge of training the Iraqi forces. After a year of doing that, he went to TRADOC. Kind of a big suprize that he's taking CENTCOM if this article is true.
That Admiral is a fighter pilot.

Apologies to the QPs if I'm out of my lane: I know only what I've read, and what's worse I read it in a book that annoyed NousDefionsDoc. But in Masters of Chaos, Linda Robinson describes the pleasant surprise of a detachment commander who conferred with then-MG Petraeus and some of his staff not long after the initial invasion of Iraq.
"Here I am, a snot-nosed captain," she quotes him, "and the general actually wants to know what I think." Hearing him out, the general turned to the officers with him to ask, "Are you getting this?"
I'm getting ready to deploy this year and everyone I know in my command group, including myself, is kind of scratching their heads on this one. Naval Admiral in charge of two ground wars that deal heavily in COIN. His last major assignment dealing with any type of combat operations in that Theatre was during Desert Storm?
A MAJ I work closely with worked for LTG Petraeus at MNSTC-I. He has nothing but positive comments about his command philosophy and take action attitude. The MAJ has recounted numerous stories of LTG Petraeus sticking up for the guys on the ground and cutting through red tape as much as possible in order to achieve positive results.
In one incident, some Soldiers working for MNSTC-I took small arms fire while traveling from the Green Zone to another FOB, they responded by firing on the insurgents who were occupying a heavily populated civilian building. Some BN Commander responsible for that sector got some shit from the locals about damage caused by American fire and tried to get the Soldiers in trouble for "indiscriminate" fire. Petraeus had his Chief of Staff personally call up the BC and told him to pound sand.

Everything I've read and heard leads me to believe the only problem with LTG Petraeus is that he's not there yet. He's exactly the right guy for the job.
As for a Navy Admiral in charge of CENTCOM. It's not the name I was hearing or hoping for. But it's a good thing. It gives me hope that one day I will command the Space Shuttle or a mission to mars.
WTF? This is the BEST, MOST QUALIFIED person in the entire UNITED STATES to led us through this difficult time? We can do better.

was the 101st CDR during the initial push into Iraq and the proponent behind having 10th Group removed from the North. That may lend something to his "attitude" towad SOF.
My current boss has had a couple run-ins with him, no good stories from the experiences. I belive the word peacock was used......

Patton was a peacock. If he gets the job done, so be it.
I hate the "us/them" rice bowl BS...from SOF/Conventional to Army/Navy/Air Force/USMC to DoD/State Republicans/Democrats/Independents...you name it. Knock off the crap...it's a national issue...it's time to start thinking about what's best for the Red-White and Blue. Seems many are forgetting that...
I'm already starting to hear about some of the budget games the Dems are planning on playing politics with us over the war...we have troops in the field. Fund them. It makes me sick.

LTG Petraeus seems to be one of the good guys and he seems to understand COIN. This (http://usacac.leavenworth.army.mil/CAC/milreview/English/JanFeb06/Petraeus1.pdf) is an article he wrote not long ago about his take on the subject.

We aren't the only one's playing the us/them game. If the conventional side would leave us alone and let us do what we do best things might be a little different. A lot of the sr. leadership (O5/E9 and above) don't like us and don't want us to play with there boys, or in there AO. I don't know where the prejudice comes from but it interferes with killing the guys who need killing. So when someone gets a put in a new position I think it is a fair question to find out what his history is in relationship to SOF units.

Max,
Not mad at you...just the general [sorry] attitude. I know it goes both ways.
Read a preview of a book called the Spider and the Starfish earlier this week. It compares centralized vs decentralized organizations. Couldn't help see the analogies between USSF and conventional forces. AFG is a perfect example. ODAs (decentralized) operating made things happen...them mother conventional JTF shows up and says "Whoa! You gotta submit a CONOP 3 days prior in triplicate with the correct risk assessments. And no typos. Don't forget mother may I please kill the sorry SOBs who are responsible for me being here in the first place...thank you very much." All of a suddem operations come to a screaming halt...hmmm.

Was Petraeus the guy that wasted the year with the Iraqi training or was that somebody else?
I believe that shortly after LTG Petraeus left the Iraq training assignment, General Casey told congress that the number of combat ready Iraqi battalions had fallen to some single digit number, from a slightly larger single digit number. I don't remember Petraeus's reassignment being in the news, although he was when he first took the position. GEN Casey's little talk to congress on the other hand, definitely was.

ADM Fallon was the PACOM CDR when I was the JPAC SGN. At the behest of the PACOM SGN - I briefed him more than once (as an Army Cpt) in the audience of enough stars to fill multiple constellations:rolleyes: .
As an officer, he never failed to grant me the respect of my expertise and experience (as an advisor to his staff) for the medical needs of our mission. Further, when I justified my medical personnel requirements, he made certian that we were afforded what we needed by the other services.
I obviously can't speak for the mindset of him being placed where he is going, nor to any of his combat leadership....but my limited experience with him at PACOM was a good one.

I really dont know about his dealings with 10th SFG or the training the Iraq Army, but LTG Petraeus in Mosul and Col. H. R. McMaster with the 3rd ACR in Tal Afar are the only two instances that I have seen of conventional units that have been able to really "reach" the population, get them on board with our program and make some head road into defeating the insurgency...I have thought for some time that it would be very interesting to see if LTG P could do the same thing on a country-wide scale that he did in Mosul while with the 101st.

WM,
I wasnt trying to ruffle any feathers here, just relaying the experiences as told to me by a former SF Battalion/FOB Commander working in his sector as I understood Max's question to be.
To give some benefit of the doubt in this area, I'll point out that LTG Petraeus' current CSM is Dave Bruner, formerly the SWCS CSM.
