Had dinner with him right before I deployed, he's doing well. As too the echo kick me a PM with his name, There were two differant SR Echo's while I was there, and I worked with both of them.
Just signed on the boards, and got to 1/10 in Jan. I'm the medic on 011. Came from 5th Grp after my wife got a DA Civilian job down in Garmisch last summer. Want some fun? Try pushing through a 4187 from Baghdad.

I was back at Devens a couple of months ago and went by my old barracks with Co D, in 69 - 70 and my team rooms, ODA 313 and 314 from 74 to 76 and again in 79 to 80. Interesting to see the area over grown. Got inside the old team room and took some pics of the area. Can not believe how much it has decayed.
Like they say, you can't go back. :(

Shirley airport exists no more. They are building condos around the area. Shirley is now a main commuter train stop to Boston for the area.
Of course, they still have the trailer I lived in when I first got married in 1970. :munchin

C The last time I was near Devens was in the early 80s. .
Entered the service there in 65, youngest son born there in 69, retired from there in 93. It was a shame to see it close down finally even though it had its draw backs, there were a lot of great things about its location. Used the facilities there until they closed it down and now go to Hanscom AFB once a month to refuel and refit:D

I remember after they closed Pepperille airport (or something like that) members of the the Trojan club cleared a drop zone behind Shirley airport. It was kind of small but it worked out for most of us in the club. Is the jail near Devens still there? I remeber making a jump and landing in the courtyard. That was fun. Almost as nice as the HALO teams landing in Sear's town.

Count Johnny G out of that equation....had a hard landing a few months ago at Yuma and broke his femur. Maybee you should have explored that bubble wrap plan a bit more!

Damn!!! Firebeef. I watched that Myth Buster show last night. They wanted to recreate an old myth type happening from here in AZ a few decades ago. Where a retired Air force sergeant slapped a JADO on his 67 Impala, lost it and flew into some hill. The myth buster guys looked high and low for that '67 Impala. Thing is, it was the 60's. Not to mention destroying your home. :rolleyes:

Couldn't hack it as an NCO, so I went Warrant as a PA, then slipped further down the slope when we all got Comissioned.
PA for 2/10 SFG '96-'99. Incredible group of guys.
Retired in '02. Happily working 2-3 days per week solo in a Rural Hospital ER. Sounds good, except they're 24hr shifts... Money's good, anyway.

DAMN ! It´s a small world... If you run into him or talk to him please tell him I said "Hi". Hope his wife and kids (3 I think ?) are doing fine. Last thing I know is he went from Toelz to Carson. Still have a videotape featuring him at the farewell ceremony at Flint... He is a great guy, not only physically. :D

They did indeed. The last time we were at Incirilik, when we closed the GB club, every morning Gag would crank up Jimi Hendrix's Woodstock live version of the "Star Spangled Banner" and he and Al would get out in their PT uniforms and air guitar it. If I live to be 120, I will never forget the sight of those 2 clowns,and the smile it brought to our faces!

SFC Henry was gray haired and grzzley when I met him. Here is what I remember about him.
He lied about his age and volunteered for WW II. He was in combat at age 17. He was "Glider Pilot" qualified. A little known fact is that a lot of the early combat jumps were from gliders being as they were cheaper to build than motorized air craft. He was an assistant machine gunner in the Rangers during the Korean War.
He had two tours with SF in RVN and there were names and places mentioned that I no longer remember that others would surely know.
He had a metal pin in one ankle from an old injury but I saw him one day pick up a guy's heavy rucksack and sling it up over his shoulder so it landed on top of his rucksack and choggy off holding it up there balanced with one hand. He carried those two rucksacks for nearly three miles up there in the White Mountains that day. Made my eyes bug out , being as I was straining with just mine.
He had spent a lot of time with 10 SFG in Bad Tolz and was about as German as a person could be without actually being German.
I really don't remember him being "tall" being as I am tall. What I remember is him being "bigger than life" and everything an SF trooper would want to be.

By tall I meant short. He always wound up as the left guide in parades and he kneed an idiot in Boston that ran out to spit at him. While it was caught on TV it never aired because Boston was ashamed of how 10th Group was treated that parade. Grop Commander told them that 10th Group would never participate in another parade in Boston.
Don't think we did either, unless it occured after I left there.

Was 11B4S on ODA-333, Co C, 3rd Bn 10th SFG(A) from Dec 72 (went direct from RVN to the land of ice and ice) thru Apr 75. Capt Chamberlain was our team leader and Charlie Campbell was team sgt. I remember having been newly married and taking this sweet young thing up to Devens. We bought a house in Ayre - wood frame 2 story. Had a painting party - wanted to get the upstairs bedrooms painted a light blue. I bought painting utensils and the beer, team members were told to being paint. When the team arrived, I was told to stay down stairs and entertain wives/girl friends that came along. I knew they were finished when Charlie Campbell came down, walked into the kitchen and grabbed a case of beer from the refrig and headed into the living room. My wife went upstairs and the next thing I hear is a blood-curdling scream from the top landing. When I got upstairs, the bedroom (supposed to be light blue) now looked like the side of a camoflaged C-130. Somehow, my wife didn't see the humor in it!

Let's talk about a young SSG who let a pecker head Maj Mirus talk him into spotting the first pass of a UHIH on Malmsheim, DZ, FRG 13 May 80 that put my sorry butt 2 km off the DZ. Mirus took credit for the jump but young SSG Snaquebite signed the manifest as the jumpmaster. Where was the respect on that drop:D A lot of good folks on that jump Carson, Goforth, Shedlock, Billingsley, Graves, Snider, Thurston and of course the guy you should have used for the wind dummy Jimmy Trainor.

Actually it was put together by the Senile Officers Turkey Farm Europe (SOTFE) for those of us playing around in Flintlock that year. The bulk of the folks were from 3/10 because they were running the EDH, I was over there checking on my deployed A-Teams and wanted to give SOTFE some guidance about a stupid plan that they were proposing for one of my teams and had some time to kill .

Almost ended in a courts-martial. They wanted to skyhook out a member of a 4 man pilot team leaving three guys with a whole bunch of equipment that couldn't be split up very well. The whole point of putting the pilot team in was to have them feed SITREPs back to me so I could prepare the follow on teams for infiltration and develop an area command. It made no sense as we had good commo, nothing could be gained by ripping out a radio operator from Germany back to the UK just to jump him back in again with the infiltrating teams. It also made no sense to me to practice something that had to be done right the first time everytime with one of my troops. So I talked the Group Cdr into letting me go over there, check on the two teams that were already deployed and tell SOTFE that if they wanted to exercise the Fulton Recovery System then why not jerk out one of the downed pilots we were running thru the E&E net. Failing that why not jerk me out and I could go back and brief the follow on teams that I was slated to control anyway and reinfiltrate with them. I told him I would have to jump back in anyway because you only get paid jump pay for jumping out of a plane and not by being dragged back into one. Well this jerk LTC told me that no, the military spent too much money on airforce folks to put them at risk and that one of my soldiers was more expendable than was I should this thing not function correctly. That set me off and I jumped dead in his shit, went to knock him on his ass while muttering some incoherent choice words when my SGM (Ernie "Duke" Snider) grabbed me from behind and hauled me away before I could do any damage. The LTC registered a protest as to my threating nature and "overly protective attitude toward my soliders" and of course because it was only the three of us ,and Duke had not seen anything "unusual" ,I got off with a nod and a wink by the Group Cdr. So how do you think my discussion went?:D

Yeah, I know. But what a price for a soldier to needlessly pay to prove a point. Perhaps if I had been able to deck that clown and got court-martialed to bring it to the fore maybe Cliff would never had to pay for such idiocy. When I heard about that I got that sickening hollow feeling in my gut-just one of the many shadows that crop up from time to time.

The other Col, I believe, was Col Ed Catulo (sp?) and was memoralized at The Fort by naming the Latrine after him, "Dead Ed's Head". :boohoo
Hmmm, that was a bit ago. I was stuck on "controller/grader" duty for an NG team that did very well. Even though they got screwed on jump in. Got hammered by the Rough terrain Teams in England for their jump in as they stated they were the only teams that DID NOT go in teh trees. I told them that the beets were rough enough. :D

Wasn't it a year later when we Skyhooked Mark LaRochelle back to Skulthorpe? He was luckier than Cliff and made it only to be killed in a chopper crash a few years later.

That was the incident I was talking about. When I found out that they had decided to hook out Mark, Duke Snider and I went to SOTFE and I went toe to toe with some LTC whose name escapes me now. The LTC made an effort to call for a couple of the brit MPs who where walking by when Duke grabbed me around my chest and hauled me off before I did what he wanted to do but realized that it was a no win situation. We made it out to the PZ and I went over all the equipment to make sure in my own mind that it was straight. I can still see Mark sailing over the treetops and not missing them by much when that bird snatched him. I quess the moral of the story is that SGMs often provide the adult supervision that officers tend to need from time to time:D

Really loved the "lets get bashed up by trees, and poke an eye out" jumps. Loads of fun, a zillion laughs. Really loved the prep for a great PLF while protecting your assets and making sure your elbows were tight to your sides with your chin tucked up tight to your chest..... and then realizing, after you finally get the chute out of the friggin trees that you have to run the length of Turner to make your next jump - just to do it all again. :eek:

:munchin I bet you don't miss the mosquitos there during those evening and night jumps. They drank more than some of the guys did at the Cinema Lounge in Leominster.

A Co, 2nd Batallion Team 213 from 82-84. The golf course was wonderful and it only cost $3 with equipment included for eighteen holes. (for my rank it was that cheap). Motorcycle accident leaving post drunk, and a lot of drinking at the Trojan club, A good time was had by all.

Greetings All: I am Joe US Army retired in NM. I grew up in a Special Forces Family in the 50s and went to the field as a teenager with FA-1, 10th GP. After jump school at Ft. Bragg (1961), I went to TNG GP and became a (911.73) SF Medic 91B4S29 Class 63-7. From there to E/7th SFG, A/3rd SFG, A/10th SFG MedOps and ran the Med Lab/Med Supply in Lenggries and Toelz. From there to Flight School and DS 46th SFCo. I later helped set up the High Altitude Winter Training Site at Eagle, CO for the 10th GP and flew for the HATS which I also helped organize. I retired in 1996 as a CW5 and was the First CW5 (not 180) in the 1st SF Regiment. See Ya.

Hi to all, this is my 2nd post, after my INTRODUCTION. Just did a 4 year stint, 80-84. Started in Sig. Co 4/81 to 9/81, then on to C-2-10, ODA 233 and 234, until ETS in 3-84. Duke Snider was the Bn SGM, and saved my ass once in Norway, after I went "missing" and didn't show up on time for isolation, after a long night of hard drinking. Spent many nights at the Cinema club, and met my wife at Scampi's. I believe before "Maj" Moroney, wasn't there a Major General Thomas (General was his first name) in B Co?
ANyone here know Brian Look? We did basic thru the Q course together, he went to 3rd Bn, me to 2nd. I was able to contact him in about 1998, and we were gonna get together in Ma. after he retired. We talked several times, then I didn't hear from him for awhile. Found out he died from a heart attack about a year from retirement. Great guy, and had some great times with him.

Duke is doing well, just had a knee replacement and then held races for those in the hospital demonstrating his knee was working with his hospital gown open in the back as he "raced" up and down the hall.:D. Brad took over A Company, did a number on himself with some heavy drinking, screwed up his family, and what he had left of his career. He and Danny Justice got so plowed one night I had to stop Brad from going into the MP station to vouch for Danny. While I was in the provost martial's office doing my best imitation of someone who could save Danny from the evils of drink I could see that dick head Brad standing outside the window, to which the provost martial's back was turned, pissing on the snow bank. I managed to keep the provost martial from turning around, sprung Danny, and took Brad home where he promptly puked all over his dog.

Funny story, if true! Good to hear SGM Snider is doing well. I called him once, after I ETS'd, since I moved out to Wa. Sadly, most of what he remembered about me was getting my ass out of trouble. I think me and Cpt. Thomas would have gotten along real well....

2/10th, 82-84. S2 and interim S3 . . .
...and laughed at by my Q course team medic ("George" - now retired in MA) and weapons SGT ("Kim" -transplanted from 2/75), both of whom ended up in B/2/10, for getting caught in the head shed after a great Q course experience with them. . . and just by luck back in touch with one of them, who is in touch with the other.
I recall an EDH at Stuttgart with a C/2/10 B Team just a year or so after the fatal STAR mission; SOTFE switched to sandbags.
Attended CSM Snider's retirement. I recall two follow-on CSMs for 2/10th, including one that was a national officer in the fledgling Ranger Ass'n and one who ended up medically retiring because of some heart condition in 84.
I was there for CPT General Thomas in his "exercise" that derailed him unfortunately, and if I recall correctly, it almost dragged in his Co SGM, but fortunately not.
Is HALO CPT Al on this net from those days?
Together with "Pete," the Bn Medical NCO, I recall spending a lot of time rucksacking around MCI Shirley. Someone I am still in touch with just caught up with Pete in the last month.
My last 10th Group function was the Nashua, NH hail and farewell before the move to Carson...and a chance for a reunion with my old Group Commander, and the "then" current Group Commander, who had been in the Q course with me. A great time had by all.

A new member here. Served with the 10th Grp from Apr 55 to Oct 58.
Started out at the Ranger Batt 77-81 then proceeded to 5th Group (583). When 5th began talking about switching to the desert AO, I bailed ship. Had enough of that environment, already.
Did the DLI thing for German and finished out my career with 10th. I'm now working in Budapest as a DA civilian enjoying the chaos of figuring out 2 militaries instead of 1. Great to be here on the boards.

Best memories of Devens: The Rod and Gun Club, The Fort, knocking golf balls into the cemetery on the 18th hole - every now and then I'd hit a tumbstone and bounce it out - that was rare. Skiing every Wednesday afternoon for $2.00 at that place other side of Townsound (can't rember the name), driving over the frost heaves to get there, Discovering the Goddard Memorial - without even knowing it was there, discovering the 300 year old tumbstones out on the south post area between Turner DZ and Route 2. Skiing up at Wildcat. Finding good stuff in the Thrift Shop near the Main Post Snack Bar. The Boston Red Sox, Larry Bird, and Kimballs Farm Ice Cream. The Gals up in Berlin NH.
Things I liked least - seeing my friend Titsworth dead just outside the main gate with the most unlikely car crash I ever heard of. Hearing about my friend Blair dead up near Graylock Gym in the second most unlikely fatal car crash ever. Last SF assignment was C/3/ 10. LTC Polhemus was BN CO. Recall some of the older NCO's from the 60's and earlier were still around. Sorry, I cannot recall many names from then. I saw a CPT I recalled from RVN from the IV Corps Mike Force. He was back to SSG. In 72-73 during the IOAC, every fellow SF CPT I knew was RIF except two, who were on Son Tay Raid when I was in college. I started to see SF lose many combat experienced CPT's in late 72. In 74-75 at Devens before I got the axe, I saw the RA leg and airborne officers take over SF with a few exceptions. My ass would gave been gone in the late 72 RIF had I not completed my degree gratis Chief Infantry Branch.

C-3/10 on 081 from JUL 90 until about MAY 95. I was the team sergeant.
Then:
C-3/10 on 080 as the company ops sergeant, HHC 10th as the 1SG, GP S-2 NCOIC, and 3/10 S-3 SGM departing in JUN 01.
Retired in JAN 04 as the Co SGM for C-3/5 (090).

Got to the 10th in 74, first on 335 with Firewood Roberts (I was on the ARTEP in PA where he earned "Firewood"), also Dirty Joe W., Filthy Fred P., Sherman J. (RIP), Dave G., ex-POW Donny McP., Steve B., Gentry D., Chester M., etc. HALO MTT to Spain with 323, then moved to 321 after a language reorg. Spent LOTS of time jumping at Shirley and Pepperrell then left for the Golden Knights in Jan 79.
Helped run the first jump school there at Devens for the SF reserves, and was on the DZ when a Cessna flew over between passes. LTC Marechek went ballistic and ordered me to give him my pistol so he could shoot the plane down. Fortunately for all concerned I was unarmed...

Co B, 10th SFGA 1971-1972; MOS 31542. It was either ODA 21 or ODA 24, don't remember alot because it only had me as the Det Cdr and a SSG 11F. We served as fillers for training (Indiantown Gap, Summer ROTC Camp and a flyaway DA training mission to attack a missile base on Eglin AFB. Otherwise, I spent mos of my time working on updating the area study for our UWOA in a certain country.
Memories of 10th Group: Ski training at Sunday River, ME; the big tree in the middle of Turner DZ that you had to avoid; learning to slack rope rappel on the tower behind Group Headquarters; the Group Dining-In where the field grade officers attended wearing, not dress or mess blues, camouflage tuxedos; and my NCO teaching me how to pick locks.
Geez, guess I missed the thread too. Good to see you at the graduation last year.

Maybe you were still there (on ODA-7) when (then) SGT Paul Tompkins arrived on that team? I was his replacement at doing the Purgatory driver stint for COL Holt. Served on ODA-4 (MSG Don Williams) after completing that short Det Europe gig. A-1-10 from 81 - 83.
Good times. Best peacetime assignment location I ever had.
