I never met Jon, but Jack was a different story. A man who gave himeself to this country in many ways. Jack was a consistent piece here in AF and would come in bearing news for us in the 2 Shop on a frequent basis. He was 2 days short of coming home and spending time with the wife and joked about risking himself for the betterment of this country. He made many friends, both Afghan and Coalition. He surely made enemies, because Jack still new how to give the badguys hell. Always gave a good story that would be sure to get a smile out of us. He was a good soul and will be missed.

Jack was not only large in stature, but his heart was big too. He loved making a good impression on young children and would help in whatever way he could. He was the counter to the ugly American. His job was an unseen and mostly thankless one. Most will never know what he did for Afghanistan and it's people. It's the thankless and cowardly ones that take good men like Jack.

I'll miss you Jack, godspeed and soft landings. Rest assured that we know who's responsible and they will not like our response.

For those back home, Jack and Jon will both be rendered honors just as any soldier would. There will be a rampside ceremony to honor these two great Americans and to send them home to their families.

Regards,

I first met Jon during a torch mission in Chiang Mai, Thailand in 2002. One of our team members was infamous for bumming Copenhagen. His bogarting became so much of a problem that those of us that had the habit had quickly run out by the second week. Jon heard us bitching about it one day near a classroom but said nothing. He had taken off the next day to Bangkok for some business. Three days later he shows up with a half dozen logs of the cardboard cans. Pro bono he says. He just wanted us to see if we could get our hands on some used woodland bdu's for his sniper students when we got back to Colorado. We found about 200 sets of useable bdu's that were going to be trashed in a warehouse and sent them to him. Our thanks for his kindness. That guy was a 1st Group legend and a damn good man. RIP brother.
