Buddy of mine told me this story probably about 1958. Back then the Arty FO had a Recon Sgt and driver.
They were on a Op at Graf and the DIVARTY CG showed up. He had the LT adjust on a target and FFE. Sgt did the same.
This is before Pig Pen. Their driver was known as rag's and didn't appear to be smart.
GO ask the driver could he adjust fire. Yes Sir!! Ok pick any target. Kid picked up the mike and sent a fire mission. Adjusted on his target with 2 rounds and FFE.
GO said"son you didn't use a map or compass!!"
Yes Sir but the Az to the Lt's target was xxx and sarge's was xxx. The target I picked was about half way between the other 2 target. So I used xxx that was close enough.
GO gave him an ATTA BOY walked off shaking his head.
