View Full Version : Gourmet popcorn

One of the manufacturing companies that my employer distributes for sent our office a box of various types of gourmet popcorn yesterday. I'm normally a butter and salt kind of gal...but some of the flavors were pretty tasty. Could make a fun gift for either yourself or a popcorn lover in your life...

The site is www.daleandthomas.com The mfg company sent over the large sampler, I think there were 12 different bags.

They actually have some flavors that look great as well as some that I have not seen before.

I have to say the peanut butter one was awesome! And the chocolate caramel was good too. The blueberry...meh it tasted like grape jelly. Oh and the Chipotle...yum!

This dredged up another memory Gypsy. I know.

Years ago, um..... well a couple decades I suppose, I used to use the white cheddar cheese popcorn, when I made scrambled eggs. Just did the regular thing, whipping up a dozen eggs with some milk added in a bowl, stirred in the popcorn and cooked it. There are some flavors on that site, that look like they would be fantastic for that. ;)

Brad-
Popcorn in scrambled eggs? No dissing, just a question, haven't tried them. But, you could get 'crunchy' scrambled eggs in C's. When I cook breakfast, I generally do omelettes - and not those flat little messhall ones - I think I could probably find my omelette pan somewhere, although it's not necessary - 2" thick, swiss, ham, green onions, nice and brown on the outside, with homefries and a good pot of coffee.

Now the chipotle, or jalapeno popcorn would be great with a nice cool Grolsch, or Tecate, or Negra Modelo. wow! A double outside thread reference, with a half twist, while staying mostly on topic - degree of difficulty.........3.0

My mind is like Germany when doing field exercises - even on infil, every bent blade of grass or broken stalk of wheat or bootprint will cost you. And, it's a cold and dark place, and rains a lot inside my cranium.

How long do you think your infil will last - I have to start making up the bill now.

Just send some jalapeno pocorn after you're done stomping around in my brain. [hijack over, back to topic, pretty neat, huh?]

I received a gift basket from one of our vendors last year that had some "Marion Berry" Kettle Corn in it. That was some good popcorn.

I love popcorn, I have fond memories of growing up and my grandpa making a batch of popcorn on the stove, and sitting down to watch the Dolphins play.

LOL Gypsy. I'm not sure. I think one Sunday morning, some 16 years ago, I wanted scrambled eggs and there was a bag of the white chedder popcorn sitting there. Soooo a bunch got dumped into the eggs. It was really good. I kept making them that way for years. I don't cook much, but if I do, it's best to keep the spice cabinet is closed. I don't know what alot of that stuff is, but I'll use 'em. :D

x_........ I have had the opportunity to have the crunchy parts of the C Rat's scrambled eggs. Not nearrrrrrrrrr as good as the white cheddar popcorn. ;) However. Your omelets sound great and like Gypsy's input for them. But, keep the ham and add the sausage. Replace the home fries with 'Grandma's Fries' ( I mentioned those on this forum sometime back) and some Baileys Irish Cream for the coffee. Oh Yeah! Don't forget to add some sort of flavored popcorn to those omelets..........

Pssst..... x_

That comment reminded me of a story. Several years ago, a friend of mine used to be a property manager for the Peabody Mansion in Oak Brook, IL. Really awesome place, complete with underground tunnels (and my friend, the little so and so, would try to ditch me in them...bastige. But I digress...) and a storied history.

Anyway, Joseph (my friend, the bastige) had a trained guard dog, a GSD (straight from Germany), since rumor had it the mansion was also haunted and folks would try to gain access at night and all that jazz. The first time I drove up there the dog was barking like crazy and pacing back and forth...pretty much a menacing looking animal.

I, on the other hand, thought he was a beautiful dog. I approached the run with my palms up and talked softly. (Sure and I knew he couldn't jump the 10 ft fence) Francis (the dog's name) stopped barking, and sat at the fence and sniffed my hands through one of the openings in the chain links, and licked one of my palms. After a fashion Joseph opened the run and we walked in together...the dog was positively docile. I'd never make the mistake of going in alone during the first few visits, but he seemed to know I was friend vice foe. Got to the point I could walk into the run from the house, he'd trot up and greet me like an old friend. He seemed to like to stand on his hind legs and put his paws on each of my shoulders, and was "taller" than I...since I'm only 5'3" maybe that isn't terribly unusual.

Interestingly, after the first time I was there he never again barked at my car as I approached the entrance to the property...and would run back and forth in the run and wag his tail.

Just call me the Dog Whisperer. :D

Gypsy
08-13-2006, 21:18
Nothing to do with popcorn, but I guess I can hijack my thread. Here's the link to the estate in my dog story. The chapel on the property is absolutely magnificent...the artwork on the front of the entrance is created from mosaic tile.

Disappointingly, they have cut down several areas of trees to make way for the off leash dog area. It has, in my opinion, ruined the ambience of the property which feels quite sacred.

Gypsy- You would have to have been doing some bad drugs to put either of those into eggs. But the pecan thing makes me think of pecan crusted french toast, with sweet butter and real maple syrup (COL Jack, we need your help!) with a good dark roast coffee and the Sunday NY Times crossword...... on the boat would be nice too, if I can get the stove working again.

That actually sounds really good. I am making Fench Toast for dinner tonight as my wife brought home some Honey Wheat bread, sliced thick, from the Bakery/Cafe she is the manager of. They have a cinnamon roll loaf of bread as well that I make French Toast from and it is phenominal!!! I will have to get some pics of that one the next time we make it.

Brew-
The secret to great French Toast (don't tell Gypsy) is - leave the bread out the morning of the day before you plan to make it - uncovered - yes, it gets partially stale (use good bread, thick sliced, about 1-2"). At least 2 hrs before you plan on cooking it - mix up (for each slice of bread) 2 well beaten eggs, 1/8-1/4 cup milk, 1/8 tsp cinnamon, 1/8 tsp nutmeg, 1/8 tsp sugar, 3 drops of vanilla -beat it all together with a fork until it froths, allow to sit for 5 minutes, and beat it until it froths again. Lay out the semi stale bread in a pyrex baking dish, with 1/2 the egg milk, spices mixture in the bottom - pretty close, touching even - then pour the rest over the bread. cover with saran wrap, and refrigerate for 2 hours minimum. Melt butter in a cast iron skillet (you actually want to go to Buerre bruin) and cook a couple at a time - be careful - the soaked bread will want to fall apart as you put it in the pan - use a spatula if you need to. Cook until a dark golden brown - top wit hwhatever you like to put on French toast - prior to cooking you can (if you are more nimble than me) roll the crust in crushed pecans. Enjoy!!

I generally don't eat breakfast - occasionally on weekends - let me know what time is good for you - hope you don't mind fresh ground Guatemalan Antigua Coffee - it's all I have - I take that back, I do have some Tchibo.

Most of the time...and no apology necessary!

Not sure about the popcorn, but the peanut butter and honey would be interesting. Then again, one of my "quick fix" protein breakfasts consists of a piece of toast, p'nut butter and a fried egg on top. Over easy, please.

Note to Gypsy and x_sf_med re: mustard - Try Weber's Horseradish Mustard. It is available nationwide now (or at least as far as the Mississippi  ). I will need Gypsy's ok for this menu, but the original plan was only for breakfast:

Gourmet French Toast : great French Toast (don't tell Gypsy) is - leave the bread out the morning of the day before you plan to make it - uncovered - yes, it gets partially stale (use good bread, thick sliced, about 1-2"). Cook until a dark golden brown - top wit hwhatever you like to put on French toast - prior to cooking you can (if you are more nimble than me) roll the crust in crushed pecans. Enjoy!!
Omelettes: I will not give out my recipe but they will include swiss cheese, finely chopped green onions, a touch of fresh parsley, and sausage from Karl Ehmer's if they are still open.

Reusti, or Home Fries - depends on the mood - but since I only have one iron skillet at the moment, this could be difficult.

Homemade Biscuits with sweet or salted butter

Assorted Fresh Fruit

Fresh OJ

LOTS of fresh ground Guatemalan Antigua Coffee, brewed strong - could be made into a cafe mocha with the addition of Ghirardelli ground cocoa and chocolate and either heavy cream or half and half. Cappucino or espresso no request.

NY Times Sunday Crossword

Good Jazz or Classical music

TUMS

A Nap

Would this fancy farmer's breakfast suffice? Any comments are appreciated.

RC and Gypsy are ladies, can't do "camp eggs" for them. The Reusti recipe is from my grandmother (of course it was my Swiss grandfather who gave her the recipe). And that is the cause of all the time involved - takes forever to cook that Swiss / German grated potato pancake. Plus I actually like to cook, as long as it's for others - cooking for one sucks, so when I get the chance to "stir up a buncha vittles for the visitin' folk" I granb it and run. I might have to enlist some hlep for the final cleanup. but I clean as I go.

Gypsy / RC -
Somebody has to bring a split / bottle of Veuve Cliquot Ponsardin Extra Brut ;) - if you want Mimosas - I only have Svedka vodka for screwdrivers, or beer - which really sucks for mimosas; turns out more like dead roses, which are not good in the morning - bad Stones reference, but hey, reference the earlier post about my twisted mind.

$99 for all 3 bottles, that's not a deal, that's a steal, at $99 each, it's a good deal, but, can't ship ETOH to NJ. Cheap champagne, cheap beer and cheap food are not fun at all, quality over quantity (just like SF).
