Too bad most people have not read "the Communist Manifesto", "On Guerrilla Warfare", "the Art of Revolution" and a few others - that detail what these guys are doing. Well organized, semi discreet cells, lots of time between horrendous acts, classic disruption techniques - wanton destruction causing panic/terror - a calming period - repeat.

Operations are ongoing in the attempt to roll up the entirety of this cell.

Naturally, one can be sure that there are other cells currently prepping operations around the country.

Thank you Captain Obvious. Inquiring minds can now rest easy. When did you join the CIA?

Only if American's can understand what really is going on. I think most American's don't believe a word of what comes out of the White House. Its great that this happen with what is going on in the middle east and with Isreal.

My b-school summer internship was spent with the Ground Operations London Heathrow unit of British Airways, based on the edge of LHR. I worked on analyzing the flow and service of connections baggage between the four terminals, and also completed several projects for the Terminal Five planning team. I stayed up late last night, mesmerized by the news coverage as the memories trickled back. This was just eleven years ago, but today it’s hard to imagine the world as it existed then.

Bravo Zulu and thanks to those responsible for this operation.

I read that story the other day also, and it was the first thing I thought of late last night when I saw the news breaking about this plot. 6 have since been taken into custody, so that is a positive update.

Reminiscent of Bojinka.

Are we getting better or were we lucky?

Are we getting better or were we lucky?

Yes. And we can't take comfort in either.

Are we getting better or were we lucky?

Very humble non-QP (but frequent NA/EUR traveller) opinion:

Both.

It appears to be getting better in that we are lucky that:

Analysts, QP's, Spooks, Technology - (and/or any combo of previous) - are able to do the job well OR smart enough to by-pass beuracratic impediments?
International Intelligence knowledge-sharing is more open?
Alert "Communiques" are taken seriously? (e.g. Many Eastern Block countries shut down UK Bound/Inbound flights within hours of the alert?

(100% biased - non-QP opinion - and flying home from US tomorrow. Weigh accordingly.)

I am very appreciative of the apparent coordination this time between govts. foreign and domestic.

To an outsider, it seems as if this is a very significant intelligence "win."

(Potentially unpopular additional perspective, but... It also appears that the general media has played a positive role for a change in disseminating useful information?)

vote = firm: "better and lucky"

Airlines weigh suits over terror plot loss
By UPI Staff
United Press International
August 17, 2006

LONDON (UPI) -- Airlines are considering suing the British government for losses sustained following the disruption of an alleged plot to blow up trans-Atlantic flights.

Ryanair, among others, are contemplating suing for up to $570 million to recover losses incurred when extra security measures were imposed last week, The London Times Online reported.

The threat of legal action is intended to force government officials to relax restrictions on carry-on luggage, which have led to thousands of flight cancellations and delayed millions of passengers, the newspaper said. (I'm sure this has nothing to do with the fact that they just discovered a TERROR PLOT and people just may have decided not to fly if it wasn't absolutely necessary... )

The British Home Office said it would urge the rest of Europe to adopt Britain's tighter airport controls. The European Commission said it was considering requiring all airlines flying in and out of EU airports to collect information on passengers and give it to security agencies.

Section 93 of Britain's Transport Act 2000 provides that the government can be liable to pay compensation for losses resulting from its emergency directions, the Times said.

"The British Home Office said it would urge the rest of Europe to adopt Britain's tighter airport controls. "

Anybody else in this group ever fly around Europe during the mid-70s when there were a number of very active EastBloc sponsored terrorist cells operating throughout Europe and the Mideast? I had to go through literal strip searches down to my underwear in several airports at that time; they had small rooms set up for them. I've been wondering if/when they'll ever return to that level of security.
