OK, I just got my USC season tickets, so I'm ready to talk some college football.
Which team will win the national championship? How about your local conference? Your favorite rivalry game? Anyone following recruiting?
If you're a college football fan, let's hear who you root for and what you're thinking about the upcoming season.

If you're a college football fan, let's hear who you root for and what you're thinking about the upcoming season.
I root for my alma mater, Virginia Tech.
National Champ: no idea.
ACC Champ: hate to say it, but I think Florida State gets it again. Gak.
VT - UVA: Hokies
Tech's got new starters at QB, TB, half the secondary, 3/4 of the DL, and a chunk of the OL. There's a lot of talent in those slots, but no experience as yet. The schedule starts with a cupcake, but I can easily see inexperience costing a game or two this season. It'll still be respectable, 9+ wins, but not BCS caliber.
I think Miami's dangerous but not consistent enough to get it done. They'll dominate against some and look weak against others. Usually they can scrape out a win even when flat, but they'll drop one too many somehow. Coker ends up with 10 wins and still gets fired.
Anyone following recruiting?
Tech's been on this weird blitz this summer. Something like 18 verbals in July, total of 22 or so verbals for 2007. Tech's usually got about three when the school year starts, and doesn't get to 20 until the last week of January. This year, they scored a high-buzz QB from Tidewater at the beginning of July and suddenly verbal commitments started flooding in.
The sad thing is, I won't get to watch the bulk of the season. I'll be spending it at Benning for OSUT. :boohoo

Ok I have to be a homer here (and who won't??!!) but Penn State will win the big ten outright and challenge for the national title. Provided our new QB works out of course!
Best recruiting class? USC
Best chance to surprise? Alabama
Biggest flop? Notre Dame (sorry Charlie-tuna anyone?)
You fiends from other teams may fire when ready-the line is hot! :munchin

In good years and in bad, Maryland is my team. ( I was there before the addition of Florida State:p ).
There is just something wrong in having a bowl game actually named after the financial sponsor: ex.: the Chick-fil-A Bowl (jmho)
The ACC:
Bowl Games
The bowl lineup as of the 2006 season, in order of selection (which can be based on any criteria the bowls choose, within the new parameters set by the ACC as of the 2006 season):
1 – BCS (exclusive partnership with the FedEx Orange Bowl*[1])
2 – Chick-fil-A Bowl (formerly Peach Bowl) in Atlanta, Georgia (vs SEC)
3 – Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Florida (vs Big East, the Big 12 or Notre Dame)
4 – Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando, Florida (vs Big 10)
5 – Music City Bowl in Nashville, Tennessee (vs SEC)
6 – Meineke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte, North Carolina (vs Big East or Navy)
7 – Emerald Bowl in San Francisco, California (vs Pac-10)
8 – MPC Computers Bowl in Boise, Idaho (vs WAC)
A new agreement for bowl selection was set by the ACC during their preseason media day and annual Kickoff news conference on July 25, 2006. The rules set new parameters for how teams would be selected as well as officially swapped the picks for the Chick-Fil-A and Gator Bowls. Under the new agreement, the ACC championship game loser cannot fall below the Music City Bowl (5th pick). Furthermore, a bowl game can bypass a team in the selection process only if the two teams in question are within one game of each other in the overall ACC standings. This was done in response to the mixed reaction resulting from the selection of teams in the 2005 ACC bowls. A newly agreed partnership was announced with the FedEx Orange Bowl, which will be the home of the ACC champion against another BCS at-large selection (the only exception to this would be an instance in which the ACC champion plays in the BCS National Championship Game and the conference does not field an additional at-large school bid).
Having been raised Catholic in Indiana, I am compelled to say that Notre Dame will return to their former glory and go undefeated, winning the BCS in the process. Brady Quinn is a serious Heismann contender, and rightly so. Charlie Weis is about to bring the dynasty back to South Bend.
what...? the Pokes will play all the games on the schedule...
hope i didn't jinx them...
I root for Texas A&M since I attended that university for 3 glorious years. As for who will win the MNC, I think is kind of wide open this year. Texas lost its leader and OU just lost their starting QB. I think ND has a real shot. Ohio State might also be in the hunt if they beat Texas. It should be a great year for the greatest sport around.

I am excited to see what Chris Leak can do in his final year at the helm of the Gators. He showed great improvement in his game last year. Injuries crippled their receiving corps last year, and Caldwell will be back with a crew of always talented wideouts. The #2 recruiting class should bring some additional raw talent.
While scheduling is not in their favor this year, with dates at UT (remember you can't spell Citrus without the U and the T) and at the FSU Semenholes, they have the potential to do very well. The SEC Championship is well within their reach.
On the national front I think OSU will choke against Michigan again. Penn State will be respectable, but not spectacular. USC will fall back to Earth amid the talent they lost and the scandals. Notre Dame will have another very good year but will stumble once or twice with their tough schedule. The ACC now has something close to league parity and will beat each other out of any national title contention, but I think FSU will eek out another championship. The Big 12 will be a big dud this year, its only savong grace is Adrian Peterson, but with Bomar gone Oklahoma will be one dimensional.
Being a former App State player and alum I have to give kudos to the boys in black for their D1AA national championship. Look for them to make a strong showing in defense of the title.
Oh and what the hell is the NCAA thinking changing the titles of the D1 tiers from D1 and D1AA to "Football Bowl Subdivision" for the former I-A classification and "NCAA Football Championship Subdivision" for the former I-AA group. They are attempting to say that the 2 tiers are equals, but just determine the national championships in a different manner. They are infact 2 distinctly different classes of programs, with significant differences in both stadium capacity and number of scholarships.
Best of luck to those you root for, as I am just a college football fan in general I hope this season brings some great games to the table.

They won and that is all that matters in January. GT had all summer to get ready for ND, and I tip my hat to their D. Our Defense shut down thier O in the 2nd half - 0-4 on 3rd down, 2 rec, 16 yards for Calvin Whatshisname - and did enough to get the W.

I would say that accoring to the SoS ratings, while USC has a slight edge at 62nd vs. ND at 67th, neither school has a really tough schedule.

Now, having said that, you have to consider that USC, as a Pac 10 team, has the majority of its schedule dictated and the SoS is influenced by the strength from year to year of the Pac 10.
Notre Dame, as an independent school, has much more scheduling latitude and SHOULD be playing the tougher schedule.
Obviously, most open games are inked into contracts years in advance and the powerhouse of today may be the doormat four years down the road when you actually meet, or vice versa. Penn State would have been a tough opponent in their heyday, a weak opponent in others, and is back to a winning formula again. ND and USC have each seen their good and bad years.
I would say that the while figures lie, and liars figure, the scheudules of the two teams are roughly equivalent at this point, with a very slight edge to USC. By the end of the season when the actual strength of the opponents has been proven, things may be different.

Yes, you're right we should wait until the end of the season. Both teams have pushovers on their schedule, and there has been talk of weakening the schedule a bit at ND - I hope not. The next 4-6 years do not look very tough for ND - LINK (http://www.nationalchamps.net/NCAA/future_schedules/notredame_future.htm), while at least USC has Ohio State on the schedule in 2008 and 2009 - LINK (http://www.nationalchamps.net/NCAA/future_schedules/southerncal_future.htm).

When my team wins I will not be here rubbing it in but when a good football team hands us our ass I will be the first one to step up and say so.
No ifs, ands or buts about it, Michigan is a better football team today than Notre Dame. They have my vote for top 5 this week. ND is not in the top 10. You cannot get beat that soundly in all 3 phases of the game and call it a bad day. Lots of work to do. What comes aroind goes around, and we have been getting the best of Mich for several years now.
I wasn't particularly impressed with USC, but they have a young QB and will only get stronger down the stretch, which will make beating them in thier house that much sweeter. :D
And what is up with Louisville beating Miami? They lost their QB but they impressed me.
How about them BUCKEYES! :lifter
I was only joking, of course !! Hey, no doubt about it college football season would not be a seaon without ND playing at home in Indy !! I work out with a guy that played on the ND team back in the late 80's. My VOLS lost to Florida by a measily 1pt. Florida State is one hard team to beat, but only by a 1pt margin ruined the Vegas odds today !!!................lot's of LOSERS ragging out of the casino's tonight !!!

Sure you can. You can call it a very bad day, a day in which it became impossible to win the NC and impossible for Brady Quinn to win the Heisman.
A very bad day indeed. :D

...or you could be Army and snatch defeat from the precipice of victory.
Let's see I have 40 seconds left and one time out, I'm on the 30 and driving on a confused and tired defense....the slant has worked all day and the tight end has been open the entire drive....guess I'll huddle up and wait for the coach to make a decision (way to show initiative future LT!). (2 plays later and your on the 18 with 14 secs to go) Ok, we have time for two passes into the end zone. Let's call two plays so we are prepared in case of no joy.....NAH! Let's just run one pass, waste more time in the huddle, then try an off tackle play into a spread defense! Great call coach Ross!:lifter
By the way RL Booty is a very crisp passer and chooses routes well. Very impressive despite an early quaking. ND will get it's behind handed to them again. Even though they beat up my Lions it was still apparent that if you keep pressure on BQ he will not respond as advertised (see GT and Mich games).

Oh go write a brief or something, will ya. I get tired of your bandwagon love for USC. Notice how I wasn't here rubbing it in to GP? That is because I have class in victory and defeat.
Your team is going to get better, but we'll see ya in LA in November, no matter what the record. We'll get better as well.

I think it is more than that, although I agree with your assessment.
Brady will learn to handle the blitz-zone D. Larger problem for me is we could not stop the run, we could not run. Simple as that. The only reason we had those weak CB's man-to-man was because we could not stop the run with 7.
Outcoached, outplayed. Out of the top ten.

But, does he have the power to consecrate new coaches, or Bishops? And, what is his standing in the College of Cardinals, is one of the 52 who can actually vote for a new Pope? Also remember - Torquemada believed in his own sanctity too, and look at what he did.....
Most of this has to do with NCAA II - and the removal of paid indulgences by the large schools (levelling the playing field by limiting scholarships) It's allowed most of the 'bench' scholarships to go away, giving smaller schools wit hless $$ more chance to get better players.

Hey RL does USC have any spare QB's? I am not sure what else PSU's defense was supposed to do to the number one team in the nation? Gonna be a long year in unhappy valley. :(
That just might have kept us in the BCS with that win. Great comeback!
And the Buckeyes looked sluggish against PSU - I think it was because PSU is just a good football team.
Did y'all catch the USC game tonight? Less than four minutes to go, down 7 against #2 Auburn, on fourth and long Spurrier calls a timeout. The 'ol Ball Coach didn't have a clipboard or play sheet. He just pointed to one guy and said you go this way, pointed to another guy and said you go that way, like they were on a playground or something. They ran the play and got a first down. He didn't do much in DC, but that man is one heck of a college football coach. Great ending - tight end dropped a touchdown pass in the end zone, but Gamecocks had some other shots at tying the game.

I have been watching Ohio State play this year and they could be blowing teams out more than they have. Jim Tressel is such a class coach that he pulls his starters much earlier than other coaches. Michigan is going to be a great game.
If USC continues to struggle, the Notre Dame game is going to be tough for them.
Good year so far. Auburn, Notre Dame, Texas, and now Florida are all #2 teams who have lost to underdog opponents. Michigan and Notre Dame are teams that could upset a few weeks from now.

That game would be tough no matter what. Same is true of UCLA -- records don't matter, it's always a game you can lose.
We have very tough games against Oregon and Cal left also. I definitely am concerned. But it is a young team and we'll see how they develop.

Normally a benign story until you read this line: "For the first time, the BCS title game will be played about a week after the four major bowls - the Rose, Orange, Fiesta and Sugar."
So we can't have a playoff system because it's tough on the kid's (despite 1-A Football being the ONLY sport in the NCAA without a playoff) for winterim-but we'll add a twelfth game this year....then we'll extend the season a week beyond Jan 1.
I give up.

The Wife and I were just talk about this game. The newspaper stated that this is the first time since 1967 that OSU defeated the Trojans.
Problem, we were living in Corvallis in 1978. It is our recollection that when the Trojans landed in Eugene, they stated,"That OSU was not fit to play on the same grit iron as them." We went to the game and OSU defeated USC. In 1978 the Beavers were generally in the back of the pack. It was a reason for the joke, "How to keep beavers out of your back yard, A= put up Goal posts."

Could it be that the paper referred to a win over a USC team ranked so high?

2 Michigan .9697
3 West Virginia .7862
4 Florida .7791

1) If the OSU-Michigan game is close, do they play again for the National Title?
2) At 10-2 (If we lose to USC) does Notre Dame still make a BCS game?
Also, huge game Saturday with (3)West Virginia at (5)Louisville.

You lost to Oregon State (6-4).
Florida lost to Auburn (then ranked 3 and is now 9-2)
Notre Dame lost to Michigan (now 10-0)
Arkansas lost to Your guys who were ranked 6th at the time (now 8-1)
Wisconson lost to Michigan (10-0)

By the way, it is not just who you lost to, it's who you beat. I think USC probably will lose again, but if we win out, it is very tough to argue with giving a championship game slot to a team that beat the living daylights out of Arkansas at Arkansas, soundly beat Nebraska and Oregon, and also beat Cal and Notre Dame. Plus UCLA, which is a JV team but occasionally problematic for us. :D

It just demonstrates that college football becomes more ambiguous each year they rely upon this retarded system. Let the kids play for it dammit!
