Introduction

Greetings to All,

As per instructions of this forum I would like to introduce myself.

I am an RN working in transplant and cardiovascular ICU's. I have some ER experience. I am not nor have I ever been in SOF.

I was previously in the U.S. Army reserves as a 64C10 many years ago.

I am hear to learn as I have already done so since I have joined one day ago, and it is my plan to read and continue to learn.

Possibly if I feel I have anything to contribute I may post. Hopefully my presence here is not in anyway an offense to those who have or will serve our country in a SF capacity or SOF in general.

Guy, Do you mean challenge as an RN/LVN? Or as a medic?

If you mean as a practicing nurse there is no challenge involved. All one has to do to get a license is pay the fee for "license by endorsement". They will require that the state you currently practice in as well as any others you hold licenses in, active or otherwise, send them the required information by mail.

You would have to contact every board you hold licenses in and have each respective board do this. There will be a small nominal fee for each board.

A license in CA will cost about approx $100.00. If you need to have one right away, ie you are on a travel assignment, you can go to Sacramento to the office directly and do all the paperwork in one day. There you can obtain a temporary permit and then recieve your actual license at a later date via snail mail. If you are going to do this via mail I recommend you get the temporary anyway as mistakes on their end can happen.

However, if you mean challenge as a medic I am not sure what direction to point you. I am aware of courses that other medical proffesionals from the ancillary depts take ie repiratory therapists most often, that are mostly course work followed by an intensive few days taking a pt assigmnet under direct observation. This somehow meets criteria for clinicals combined with whatever experience that the individual had in their prior discipline.

I do not personly know what schools do this but I do know individuals that have. I dont recommend it as even after two years of clinical experience concurrent with one year in a truamatic brain injury unit and medical telemetry unit I still was not fully prepared for life on the floor.

An internet search should provide you with some names and if you go this route I could make a call or two to see if people are familiar with them.

Sorry I guess I cannot help you there. Advice on nursing school yes, but on those types of study materials no. I would be in the same boat as you as far as searching for materials, worse in fact as you know more about what and how you want to achieve your goal.

Edit: Perhaps NCLEX study materials? The boards are after all national and not truly indiviualized to any one state. If and when you do take the boards let me know ,I would like to pass on a couple of pointers if I may.

I'm a "shooter" first, who happens to be a medic.

I'm just looking to do something else...once the wife gets the case of the ass about how much traveling I do.:D
