MOSCOW — Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev, the purported author of modern Russia's worst terrorist attacks, has been killed, the head of the Federal Security Service said Monday.

FSB head Nikolai Patrushev told President Vladimir Putin that Basayev had been killed overnight in Ingushetia, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported.

Basayev, 41, claimed responsibility for some of Russia's worst terror attacks, including the seizure of some 800 hostages in a Moscow theater in 2002, the 2004 school hostage taking in Beslan that killed 331, and the seizure of about 1,000 hostages at a hospital in Budyonnovsk that killed about 100.

Patrushev told Putin that the Chechen rebels had hoped to "put political pressure on the Russian leadership" during the Group of Eight summit later this week, which Putin is chairing.

Putin called Basayev's killing "deserved retribution" for terrorist attacks in Beslan and Budyonnovsk, the RIA-Novosti news agency reported.

The attack on the Beslan school shocked Russia and divided the rebel movement, since civilians, including women and children, were taken hostage.

Patrushev said that the operation to eliminate Basayev, in which many other rebels were killed, was "thanks to the operative position abroad, especially in those countries where arms were collected."

Well done.

I guess their sense of PC did not let him get a high-powered attorney or appeal to their Supreme Court. Done.

I hope they got as much out of him as they could before he died.

Good Job Ivan! One less wacko. I read that they found a shipment of explosives from Georgia enroute to his location and rigged it to blow. When he met the package, WHAMO! Russians say he was beheaded by the explosion. 4 dead jihadists, the Chechen website said he is unavailable for comment.

I'll bet the Russians are doing a lot of things in Chechnya that will never see the light of day...

Good job for the Russians, they've had a number of smaller successes tracking down and nailing lower level leaders. :lifter

The big fish is done. Time to really get to work now that the vacuum is present.

I'd say over the next few days all of his lieutenants will be sleepless, wondering when they'll take one between the running lights. :D

That thought makes me smile, with evil thoughts dancing in my head.

Glad this piece of scum is dead.

I guess their sense of PC did not let him get a high-powered attorney or appeal to their Supreme Court. not true...now that he's dead, there's plenty of time for his trial, appeal, exhumation and re-execution...

and i agree...before his untimely demise, i hope he sang...
