View Full Version : Rain..Rain..Go away
Looks like it's Colorado's turn. We've been getting our normal afternoon showers that dump some good rain down, but this stuff has been hanging around for the past several days.

I wonder if that one guys (from the above article) insurance company will at least pay for a new paint job.
Looks like it's Colorado's turn. ......
My wife's brother and his wife live out in the canyons west of town somewhere. Evergreen? Anyway, something pine tree related.
They were worried they would get burned out a bit earlier this year. Their canyon hasn't burned in years and they have tons of brush all up and down around their property.
Only a matter of time. Not if but when.

Ahh yes, but when we hear a rumble it is normally thunder or a herd of galloping critters. When you hear a rumble, assuming it is not the joy of a drive by, it's time to head for the nearest door jamb:D
80 degrees here (and that counts like global warming for us), sun, and a good stiff breeze which is sticking the beaks of mosquitos into the screening of my porch like a dart tourniment.

It's beautiful here in PA today, but we're forecasted to get scattered thunderstorms all next week. Typical Summer, at least for the past few years.
Last week was our turn in the bucket for rain. Flooding all over the place, some of it really bad.

Could be Evergreen...could be Pine...Pine Junction...Spruce...:D
I'll bet Evergreen tho.
Don't get me wrong, WE NEED THE RAIN. We didn't get our usual Spring soaking. We had Temps in the 90's in May and June and melted all the snow pack in the hills. So we knew it was going to be a dry, hot fire season.
Started to look that way a few weeks ago. We were having hot spots starting up all over. But this rain is a God send. Gets the ground nice and moist.
We'll just let SoCal, with their 80 plus, sunny weather, have ALL the wildfires this year.....ehh RL ;)
Pete,
Tell your CinC House to call her brother and move that brush back from their house, now, while it's wet and manageable. Dry leaves, twigs, and pine needles should be back away from houses, at least 25-30 feet for optimum safety. If they have any questions, I'll be more than happy to head up and lend them a hand.

Sure, wildfires, riots, earthquakes . . . bring them on. Makes life interesting. :D

Thanks for the offer.
As I understand it, they live along one of the canyons with just a few families scattered along it. They've cleared their land put the lot is surounded by tall pine trees and lots of underbrush. Plus they have a frame house.
Their fear is one of those fires that get out of control and comes roaring up the canyon. One of the earlier fires this year had them getting ready and packing.
We talked about it the last time they were out. I told them when they rebuild they need to go stucco with a tile roof.

Could be Evergreen...could be Pine...Pine Junction...Spruce...could be Conifer, too...or maybe a whole buncha evergreens, like Black Forest...:D

Well Sir....keep this under your hat....But we DON'T want loggers here cutting down our forests.
This is to appease the Tree Huggers in the PRB (People's Republic of Boulder), in the hopes that the forests will grow right up into their "Secret Lairs". Then when it gets bad enough, a nice 'lil 'ol firestorm will come racing down the hills and burn them ALL.
We've got automatic road blocks in place on all major roads in and out of the PRB to block their escape.
After they're gone, then we'll invite the loggers in, to work some Virgin Timber. :D

Here ya go...

Just picked up and cleaned my M1 yesterday. Found a shop down on Colfax that had clips, so I'm ready to go. :D
Spent alot of time in South park. My inlaws bought into an RV park there in the 80's.
Buena Vista, is a great small town. Has the Collegiate Peaks towering around it. Some ten 14ers. It has also been referred to as the 'banana belt' of the Rockies. Surprisingly mild winters for it's location. I have also stopped at that Hot Dog diner a few times.
There was a great restaurant in Bunie. Always shortened the name of Buena Vista, just never saw it spelled. ;) The place was called Emileens'. There was one in Aurora as well. They had the best Filet Mignons and at a good price.
There is so much more about that area. Gonna have to dig out my topos to refresh my memory. ;)

I'm a FOG - it's a friggin black 18ft Zodiac, we called them RB-15's....
DoD probably has some odd name - like Boat, Tactical, black, rubber, 15 pax, oars separate....with notes like - will get torn on rocks, HR holder responsible for damage/ repair/replacement in non-combat situations.
So am I. That's what they were called when I was in.

So you two young pups actually had little rubber boats, that must have been the new course as we were still learning how to strip birch bark and build canoes when I went thru:D Actually, what was in vogue when I exited my last aircraft was the Zodiac F-470 CRRC. There were also a series of Viking systems being pushed by Bob Chapman(SGM-RIP), Avalon, etc.

Col M-
They still taught that birchbark stuff at Drowning Creek when I went through the course, but still made us try and float a ruck or two or three as a raft in the coldest damn unfrozen water known to man.
Even though we used the Blackout reinforced Zodiac, SGM H, MSG J and MSG D (along with the rest of the bubbleheads) insisted we call them RB-15's - until everyone realized 'Zodiac' is much easier to say. Ah yes, tipping drills in the Shirley river, Mirror Lake, Little Mirror Lake, Popham Beach ME, and down on the Cape. Ocean trips were always in the winter though, imagine that.
And - if it was really cold - we got black rubber pajamas that zipped across the back, with feet and a hood. But, we rarely got the boats and the pajamas at the same time. Boy could you have fun with the Viking suits... I got 'beach balled' one time - it was funny - but not very comfortable.
Col M-

You could have done them in the middle of August...the ocean off the New England coast doesn't seem to get any warmer.
That works Col M. It isn't very often, I'm called a young pup. :D
That's what we had x_sf_med, RB-15s. That was the official Army designation back then.
We also had the Viking drysuits, but ours were sort of a pea soup green. We got to use both in all sorts of Bavarian lakes. one that was a bit more fun than the others was during the winter swimming across Chiemsee to the island of Herrenchiemsee. an hour or so into the swim a blizzard came down out of the mountains. Couldn't see but a couple of feet. We had no compasses. We were in that lake alot longer than originally planned. They sent out RB-15s to pick us up, but there were only a couple and about 40 of us swimming. some guys were found by the boats and some of us made it to the island. Was no fun swimming on a clear, sunny day anyway.
