From a recent trip to our nation's capital.

Anyone know who Gabriel R. Alamo is, without looking it up?

I dont want to cheat, but i think his name is in one of my books. Maybe the SOG book? or 15 months in SOG.

The SF capabilities demonstration team at Fort Bragg in the 70s and 80s was nicknamed the Gabe Team. I believe he was the namesake. In my job I got to watch about a dozen of the demonstrations.

I recall the team being disbanded around 1985.

I remember reading a sign at the site saying Gabriel Alamo was a DSC recipient.

Can't tell you what he did to earn it.

Yes - found it.

DSC for action on 6 July 1964.

Was he RD's Tm Sgt?

C'mon guys - 7th Gp thought enough of what he did to name their Motor Pool after him. There was even a painting of the action with a plaque in the entrance corridor. Peregrino

TR - I answered mostly from existing knowledge and memory. Only used other resources to find his DSC citation. Then I deduced the answer based on the dates in the citation.

Therefore, I respectfully request a reclassification to "rule bender".

Alright, you got it!

Next time, lets make these young pups work on it a bit more first.

Good job, guys. Pop Alamo would be proud.

Was out training, so I missed this one. But I knew the correct answer, without looking it up.

Yes, he was Roger Donlons Team Sergeant of A-726 and a DSC recipient for his actions at Nam Dong on July 6 1964. Sadly he was also KIA during those actions. He also served with the 82nd during WWII (he enlisted prior to WWII) as well he served in the Korean war.

SGT John Houston was also KIA during the action.

Just found this thread. For anyone who was in the 7th back then, this was one of those promotion board type questions and to which you'd better be able to give an answer.

MSG Gabriel 'Pop" Alamo and SP5 James Gabriel were two different people.

MSG Alamo was the TmSgt for A-726 and received a DSC for his actions defending Nam Dong in I Corps; CPT Donlon, his DetCdr, received the CMH for the same action. 7th SFGs Alamo Parade Field was named in his honor.

SP5 Gabriel was one of the early KIAs in Vietnam, TDY to RVN from the 1st SFG and executed when captured by the VC. The Gabriel Demonstration Area was named in his honor.

FWIW, I was the last DetCdr of A-726 when we went from a 6 team B-Team to 5 team B-Teams in '81. A-726 remained intact and became A-724 at that time.

Thanks for the setting me straight.

I have a clear memory of a Gabriel Alamo DSC recipient sign in my head. I thought I saw it at the Gabe Site. Obviously, memory failed me.
That will bug me all day as I try to figure out where I actually read the sign.

Heck, I am having trouble remembering what I had for breakfast yesterday....
