I have noticed that there has still been no thread here on the World Cup. Noe that our boys are out of it I was wondering who everybody was rooting for. I liked England but despite all their talent they just don't seem to be able to come together as a team. I am going to have to go for Germany now. I just hope that Brazil is not as unstoppable as they seem.

I stand corrected. Brazil is not unstoppable. I wish that I could have seen the game. But then again I don't like France either. It would be awesome to to see Germany stomp a mudhole in France in the final. Stomping France's a** seems to be a German tradition.

Sounds like a Wonderful Tradition why dont we start by not buying anything french...
Soccer is like watching grass grow. If someone were to ask me if I saw a match and how great it was that so and so won. I'd reply. Don't tell me. Was the score 1 zip? The best part of this world cup is the fans. The shootings, beatings and stuff. Now that is interesting.

I started watching the England v. Portugal game yesterday, the next thing I know, I'm watching the paint dry on the wall.....and it was painted several years ago.
The only good part was when it went down to the PK's to decide the match. Hey I know.....instead of having them run around for 90 plus minutes, why don't they just go straight to the PKs to decide the games? Instead of having just 5 guys try to score, have the whole team out there kicking, including the equipment managers and water boys. Then maybe I'd watch it.
Either that or, they could bury land mines out the on the field and the players have to avoid them while running back and forth and back and forth and back and forth and back.....hell you get the idea.

Kinda like hockey....only it's the players NOT the fans. :D

Exactly Sdiver......To be in a world competion and the PKs decide the outcome. Interesting. Nope. I was wrong!!! The matches themselves, don't come close to intersting. :D
It's these damn refs who are ruining the tourney; they blew the previous record for issuing yellow and red cards out of the water. Let men play like men, not like boys (although some of them act as such).

What's a world cup? Ooooooooh it's that gay sport where everyone goes down like they have been shot then jumps up after getting a foul called. Gotcha, soccer. Missing every game to date and my life remains enriched.
I was looking for that link to Home Depot, Lowe's or some home improvement store. With all of the wall paint drying, fans, and grass growning being talked about and all.
Then I thought this was a thread about the NBA finials, didn't see one. I had to do a search to make sure - Nothing.
So I thought kool a NBA Thread with all of the bad Ref calls, and guys falling down as if they had been shot or something. People running up and down a playing field over a game, scoring points and all.
But, then I read about the PKs and then I know this had to be a Rugby Thread. Now thats sport that has some crazy fan, Refs running up and down the field, guys falling down as if they have been shot. Maybe being grab in your balls - right DDD?
This is about the iRB Rugby Wold Cup? Great Thread.

Well, Germany blew it. They were two freakin' minutes from penalty kicks which they had a really good chance at winning and they gave up not one but TWO goals in a minute. Pathetic. Honestly I think the Germans gave up after the first goal. It didn't eve look like any German players were running when Italy scored the second time. Unless Portugal plays really awesome or France plays really poorly tommorow it's going to be Italy vs. France for the final. Damnit!

What was this thread about again??
Ohhh that's right...painting tips and how to watch it dry. :D

As expected France beat Portugal but they did not play as well as expected. Portugal put up a pretty good fight but couldn't quite get the ball into the net. If France plays like this against Italy they will get spanked. As much as I don't like Italy, I hate France and I would love to see them get stomped.

:D But damn!!! I finally have a bit of interest. I just want France to lose. Not that I'll watch it.
What do think the score will be? 0/0? 1/0? 0/1? Or a fluke? Two or more goals between one/or both of the teams?

France and Italy - ought to be a hoot - will France surrender? Will Italy throw in with the Germans? Or will both sides just sit down and have a glass of wine? I don't mind watching Soccer but there is just waaaaay too much hype for this.
Not that my chosen sport (sailing) is spectator friendly - but at least sailors have an e&e mechanism when they are not competing.

The Final : I know Italy will win.
The Score : There is going to be a first in World Cup play.....
Italy ... 0
Phrance ... -1
Phrance will surrender even before they hit the field, will complain that the Italian players are Blood Doping and it's all Lance Armstrong's fault.
So the World Cup officials will give the Phrench team a "Negative" score....just because they're Phrench.
Besides....I just can't see a shootout in this game......Phrance and shootout just don't go together.....it doesn't "sing". :D
The winner of the World Cup between Italy and Phrance, is going to be, whoever can sell it best.
He is one team practicing, on that "selling" part of the game of soccer....

I'm going to say Italy wins 2-1 in OT. Tomorrow, Germany and Portugal play for 3rd place.
Add: Schweinsteiger 2 goals plus an own goal lead Germany to a 3-0 win over Porugal.
Not a bad prediction...
I'm going to say Italy wins 2-1 in OT.
It's party time Italian style....

Italy wins on penalty kicks. It was actually a very good game. The French scored early on a questionable call by the ref and then the Italians evened it up a few minutes later. It was a hard fought game from there on out with the Italians having a goal recalled on yet another questionable call of off sides. Late in the second over time Zidane managed to get himself kicked out of the game for some on field jackassery when he headbutted an Italian player. The penalty kicks came down to one French player who missed his shot. The goalie dove the wrong way but his shot hit the crossbar and bounced down and then out. The Italians nailed all of their shots. I would rather have seen the US or the Germans or the English win but the important thing is that it was not the French.
SFC W
It was a well-played game. Zidane's stunt in the 110th minute was sad to see. He's a major player and a leading PK kicker on the French squad, but to make his team play 1 down in OT knowing it will probably be decided with PK's is poor judgment on his part. Hope he has a good retirement.
Any thought on if the line official saw it with his eyes or just on the replay?

I'm guessing that because there was not a whole lot else going on on the field at the time he probably did see it. I don't think that they have access to any kind of replay anyway, except for maybe the big screen. I don't see the French fighting it anyway. It was a national disgrace. Zidane will probably be fined by both FIFA and the French team.

Zidane is the winner of the Golden Ball Award.

What a load of crap. At best he deserves the Golden Ballbag award. Even without the jackassery I don't think he the best. I think this was just a nice parting gift for the end of his career.

Saw that coming :)
The head-butt to the solar plexus was a nice touch, that was just awesome.
As far as I can tell, it was decided prior to the final match.

Oh heck yeah. Get them in front of the UN Security Council on an issue on wich they are opposed to the US and they are absolutely pit bulls. Effeminate, chain smoking, pretentious pit bulls but pit bulls none the less.

More importantly, what kind of guy with any self respect head butts a guy in the chest. If you're mad enough to hit him, throw an elbow or a chin jab; don't make yourself look like a mentally challenged 5 year old on the playground on international TV.

Ah, but at that point he was no longer playing soccer, but had transitioned to ice hockey; the Italian guy just didn't realize it. ;)

Maybe he didn't have enough time to run over to the bench and grab his Uzi from his violin case. :boohoo

Italy's Coach Marcello Lippi has resigned.
I guess he's not ready for the UFC or WWE yet.
Some good news for US Soccer: Jurgen Klinsmann, California resident and German National Team Head Coach, might take over the US National Team if Bruce Arena steps down. Bruce said he would.
Also, Klinsmann's top right hand man, Joachim Löw, might lead the German team. They will discuss the issue further at a meeting after the tournament.

Klinsmann will whip the American side into shape!
Alright, I'm taking bets-
World Cup win in 10 years?
5?
Anyone?

I'm going to bet (no cover-charge 'eh?)
6yrs
(unless they hire Chuck Norris for our team:lifter )
Just to clear something up, are you saying a win within 10 years or in 10 years (2016)? The World Cup is held every 4 years, like the olympics, so bets of 10, 5, and 6 years won't work -- unless you mean within those years. The next Cup is in 4 years (2010).
Bets:
2010 (in 4 years)
2014 (in 8 years)
2018 (in 12 years)
2022 (in 16 years)
and so on....
If Klinsmann does take over, I'm going to say the US will go to the Quarter-finals in the 2010 World Cup (South Africa). The US will make it to the Finals in the 2014 Cup. Klinsmann will make the US team World Cup Champions in 8 years. The talent is out there. We just need to apply it.

I was guessing within 6 yrs...but if people want exact I'll say say in 2014 (8 years)

Poor concentration on detail on my part, gents; apologies... Next thing you know I'll be taking bets on the US winning the European Cup!
Yeah, I reckon that it'll be two world cups before they come into their own, and that's contingent on the "soccer fad" continuing, a good coach, and tons of $$$.
Also the US will soon have a lot of latin americans (tend to be excellent soccer players) coming of age as US citizens, so hopefully these kids will bolster the US team's skills!
