Here's a new level of stupidity.

LONDON, England (AP) -- A British army regiment's ceremonial pet goat was demoted in disgrace after it marched out of line before a host of international dignitaries during a parade to mark Queen's Elizabeth II's birthday, a military spokesman said Saturday.

The military mascot, a 6-year-old male goat called Billy, was downgraded from the rank of lance corporal to fusilier -- the same status as a private -- after army chiefs ruled his poor display had ruined the ceremony June 16 at a British army base in Episkopi, western Cyprus.

Lance Cpl. Dai Davies, 22, the goat's handler, was unable to keep control during the march earlier this month, as the mascot darted from side to side, throwing soldiers off their stride, spokesman Captain Crispian Coates said by telephone from Episkopi -- one of two British bases on the island.

"The goat, which has been the regiment's mascot since 2001, was supposed to be leading the march, but would not stay in line," said Coates. "He was reported for subordination and after consideration, the commanding officer decided he had no option but to demote Billy."

Since his demotion, soldiers of a lower rank are no longer expected to salute Billy as a sign of respect, Coates said. What a crock of shit!

Captain William Rose, a soldier present at the parade, said the goat "was trying to headbutt the waist and nether regions of the drummers." Why can't they just say he was butting their butts and balls?

The regiment, the 1st Battalion, The Royal Welsh, has traveled with a pet goat since soldiers adopted one of the animals during the Crimean War, awarding it ceremonial status as a lance corporal.

A total of 11 ceremonial pets -- including a ferret, an Indian black buck and a ram -- are kept by the British Army, but regiments do not take the mascots on tours to combat zones. British legislators were told last month that keeping the pets costs £30,000 ($55,000; €44,000) per year.

The Welsh regiment was presented with a goat from the Royal herd in 1746, and Billy is a descendant from the same bloodline, said a spokeswoman for Britain's Ministry of Defense, on customary condition of anonymity in line with policy.

"He is not a grazing goat and has food flown in from Wales. Billy also has an allowance of two cigarettes a day -- both of which he eats," said the spokeswoman.

Ambassadors from Spain, Sweden, the Netherlands, a United Nations special representative and the head of U.N. forces in Cyprus all attended the march, Coates added.

Well many of us have had to follow jackassess before, guess trying to follow a goat can't be much worse:D Only difference for us was that when the jackass got out of line we were demoted for his ineptitude and he was often moved on and up to better things!

Turns out the goat is from Wales, but judging from the behavior I would have thought he was Irish.

Three was a G-chief in PhIII who made us carry around a hacked up, excuse me , 'carved' fence post totem, that he insisted was alive and was 'part of the cause' - almost cost us a friggin ambush.

AHA! I think you got it, the Welsh Independence movement trained the goat to be an insurgent.

Nah, not an insurgent - not enough consonants in the name. although he could be a member of the Welsh band LLwybr LLaethog (yeah, it's a real band)

Sounds like the goat was living up to his heritage. My family is Welsh and we always seem like that.

That is, not staying in line. I don't know about the headbutting butts and balls.

I wonder if the Marines would demote Lcpl Chesty if he bahaved in such a manner... this may be an example of those prim and proper brits getting all uptight on us here. I mean, you'd think that yelling "Bad Goat!" would work just fine. My dogs cower in fear if I even grab a rolled-up copy of the WSJ, you wouldn't think it would take a demotion to affect the proper level of discipline.

Oh, and also; does the goat have any dependents? Are they going to suffer as a result of this demotion? If so, where is the RSPCA? :D

Just as long as the goat wasn't the regimental war bride:D

It being the British Army and all, tradition, you know.

I'm sure the goat will be able to soldier his way back to LCP fairly quickly.

No, he was no insurgent goat.

There were some fine points left out of the press about the goat darting from side to side. It the suppressed from the writing, so keep this in mind.

A goat from Wales being Irish and in a British Army Regiment's - The Damn Goat was Drunk! Come on -Read between the lines.

Once again some Dumdass Reporters - They never have trained with the Brits, they can drink!! The Goat just got into the Regiment's Ceremonial Ale before the march. That's way he (Goat) was not darting back and forth, he was Staggering during the march. Hell, the handler (Lance Cpl) was probably in the shape and the pet. So they both were taking guys out during the Mach.

Will they ever learn how to report - do your Area Studies people!!
