The War the Media is Not Reporting — An Iraqi Veteran Speaks Out

Apr 26, 2006
Justice

Jesse Macbeth, formerly a Special Forces Ranger in Iraq, is now active with Iraq Veterans Against the War in Tacoma, Washington. The Rangers are elite units sent door-to-door in Iraq to combat the insurgency. They were also sent into Fallujah to crush all opposition to the occupation of that city. Justice recently interviewed Jesse.

How did you end up in the military?
I grew up on the streets. I got into trouble for fighting. The same judge that I'd been dealing with my whole life told me that I wouldn't have to do adult time if I signed up for the military immediately. Sometimes I kinda wish I went to jail instead.

How did you become a Special Forces Ranger?
Basic training was easy for me. Growing up on the streets, I was used to running from cops. I was used to not eating for days. I got picked to go to Ranger School.

What did your division do?
I was in the Third Ranger Battalion. Our job was to strike fear in the hearts of the Iraqi people.

We would go into people's houses and plow down entire families. We would interrogate people. If we didn't like the answers that they gave, then we would kill the youngest child. If they gave more answers that we didn't like, then we'd move on to the rest of the family. They could've been innocent people.

We would leave the bodies in the streets and blame it on the Shi'ites or the Sunnis. [In Fallujah] we were ordered to go into mosques and slaughter people while they were praying. I won't go into full detail because I'm still haunted by the memories.

What was the assault on Fallujah like?
Fallujah is where we slaughtered people in mosques. We provoked the people there. Some people escaped from the mosques and saw us. We would dig holes and leave mass graves of children, women, and old men. We were ordered to let people die on the street. We were told that the Geneva Convention means nothing to us in combat.

We were ordered to fire on peaceful protesters in Fallujah. Somebody threw a rock at us, and an officer said that he thought it was a grenade. Then we were ordered to fire. When it's daylight in Iraq, it's daylight! Nobody really thought it was a grenade.

What medals did you get in Iraq?
I got a lot. I got a purple heart. Half of them, I don't remember. I got five or six medals just for landing. I got a bronze star.

What injuries did you get?
I got stabbed many times. I got shrapnel in my knee. I got shot in the back.

What do you think is the role of the U.S. in Iraq?
The military is terrorists there. Soldiers thought we were going to fight terrorism, but we became the terrorists. We were told we were going to liberate the country and find weapons of mass destruction. The real aim is to have the U.S. own the country. The U.S. wants oil.

How has the government treated you since you got back?
Like shit. I hate them. I'm not gonna be a terrorist or anything, but I hate them. They killed my battle brothers. They used me. They messed me up. They didn't care about me. They turned me into a beast, a machine.

What Veteran's benefits have you gotten?
I ain't getting nothing. A card and that's it.

Where do you work?
I'm an Iraq vet, and I work at Wendy's.

How did you get involved in IVAW?
Veteran's Affairs told me they had no money for me. I always knew the war was fucked up, but that motivated me to say something about it. The government throws us away. They did the same thing after Vietnam.

Why do you think people should get involved in the antiwar movement?
Because it's gotta stop. Innocent people are getting killed. Bush says we have to stay the course and that it's hard work. Bush doesn't know what work is.

Anything else you want to say?
Yeah. The news here is controlled. The military lets information out that serves their purposes. We slaughtered a sovereign nation. Reporters got killed.

When I was growing up, everyone thought I'd be a criminal, but they were wrong. I'm gonna be one of the leaders of the revolution.

I was one in Hawaii for a month, replaced my sham shield and went to PLDC, then I put on E-5.

I recently saw one here at Bragg while at 19th repo-depot. He was a recruiter.

They are rare, but can be found. :D

When's the last time you guys saw a Corporal?

I believe I was on the first set of orders for Corporals in 5th Group. I'd have to dig out the orders for the date but it was around early 76. For a while all the Weapons guys and Engineers were Corporals while Medics and Commo guys were SP4s.

By around 1980 it had changed back to all SP4s, and then by mid-80s back to Corporal again.

Kinda' like Sep Rats. One month you get 'um the next month back on meal cards. On/Off/On/Off another mini-revolt of the barracks rats and another issue of C-rats then MREs. The S-4 would get worn out giving MREs for details, jumps, duty, etc and we would be back on Sep Rats. New commander and out comes the meal cards again. The wheel completed another go-around.

In my past units (mostly the 82nd and LRS) if there was a squared away SPC we made them a CPL. Usually they were in some postion of responsibilty..ie Senior Scout, a fire team leader as an example. Generally they becam SGT's fairly quickly.

Besides the ludicrous nature of his accusations, were you referring to:
- the rank,
- the claim of SF and Ranger by the rank of corporal,
- the tan beret with 1st SFG(A) Flash;
- the beret without unit crest;
- the beret on backwards;
- the lack of airborne wings on a "Ranger";
- the lack of CIB on this "combat" veteran;
- the lack of Ranger Scroll on either shoulder;
- the sleeves rolled like a Marine;
- the black t-shirt;
- the BDU top on a "recent combat vet" (not DCU or ACU);
- the fact that he was in AZ during some of the dates he claims to be in Iraq
- or the fact that the US Army has no record of him ever having served?
- should I go on?

I scraped stuff that has more meaning in life off the bottom of my shoes after I cleaned my yard this weekend. I have two big dogs.

A sad example of human life. Of course, even though he has been trashed his words will live on in lib chat rooms forever. The facts may be false but the lie fits the template.

He has been "outed" just about everywhere. I think the first solid hits were by Sunday.

I like the bit about his name change at age two.

I hate to disagree with you Pete,......he's not worthy of turd status. If I could think of something more useless, by god he'd be the first to be graced with that moniker. :D

Look, I let my buddy's mother in law take a look at this. She has no experience of anything military. First words from her mouth "WTF is this little shitbird tryin' to pull off."

I seem to recall Ambush Master talking of the Browning High-Power being adequate enough to make fertilizer out of the NVA.

To be exact:

I can assure you that there were several NVA, that were reduced to fertilizer, by a particular Browning Hi-Power!!!:munchin

Full Story (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18748026/)

SEATTLE - A man who tried to position himself as a leader of the anti-war movement by claiming to have participated in war crimes while serving in Iraq is facing federal charges of falsifying his record.

Jesse Adam Macbeth, 23, formerly of Phoenix, garnered attention on blogs and in some alternative media after he began claiming in 2005 to have been awarded a Purple Heart for his service, which he said included slaughtering innocents in a Fallujah mosque. His story was contradicted by his discharge form, showing that he was kicked out of the Army after six weeks at Fort Benning, Ga., in 2003 because of his “entry level performance and conduct.”

A complaint unsealed Friday in U.S. District Court in Seattle charged him with one count of using or possessing a forged or altered military discharge certificate, and one count of making false statements in seeking benefits from the Veterans Administration.

Man gets 5 months for lying about war
By Jennifer Sullivan

Seattle Times staff reporter

A Tacoma man who falsely claimed he was a decorated war hero and even appeared in a video that protested the U.S. role in Iraq was sentenced Friday to five months in a federal prison for making false statements to the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Jesse MacBeth, 23, was also sentenced to three months in a halfway house after his release and three years of probation.

U.S. District Court Judge Robert Lasnik told MacBeth at his sentencing that he hoped "this turns out to be a turning point in your life."

MacBeth claimed to be an Army Ranger who killed more than 200 people, many at close range, including some as they prayed in a mosque. He spoke at an anti-war rally in Tacoma and appeared in a 20-minute anti-war video that circulated widely on the Internet.

In reality, MacBeth made it through only six weeks of Army basic training and never set foot in Iraq.

On Friday, MacBeth apologized to the government. "I was trying to pull a fast one, trying to get some money to get off the streets," he said.

Conservative bloggers exposed MacBeth in May 2006, embarrassing the company that produced the video about his deeds.

On June 7, MacBeth pleaded guilty to one count of making false statements to Veterans Affairs. MacBeth admitted that he filed a bogus claim for VA benefits in 2005, which included a fraudulent military-discharge form.

MacBeth said on the forms that he had been in the Army for more than three years. He also claimed he had been awarded a Purple Heart and that he was discharged because he suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder.

MacBeth spent 44 days at Fort Benning, Ga., in 2003, but was released "for issues related to entry-level performance and conduct," according to court papers.

Pepperspray Productions in Seattle produced the video titled "Jesse MacBeth: An Iraq Veteran Speaks Out." In the film, MacBeth told nuanced tales of brutal killings he carried out at the behest of his commanding officers.

Doug Carver, special agent in charge at the Veterans Affairs Office of the Inspector General, said Friday that his office is investigating about 35 veterans-benefits-fraud cases across the country. The U.S. Attorney's Office has recently investigated eight local men, including MacBeth, for charges varying from unlawful wearing of military decorations to mail fraud in connection with a scheme to frequently obtain disability benefits from Veterans Affairs.

"They are phonies and liars," interim U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Sullivan said about the suspects. "This is a crime that can be hopefully deterred."

The really sad part is that the far left liberal kooks wanted so desperatley for this to be all true.

The MSM is more than ready with pen and paper to write these stories down, print as front page news, but when it's found to completley false, where's the retraction ?

We have to force feed it down their throats until they yell uncle.

Oh yeah, Pat Tillman was a Corporal.

That is my thoughts too. His crime was more than just effecting one person. He tainted or try to taint the imagine of tens of thousands of honorable men and women and not only that there is aiding the enemy. I think Brig time for a number of years would have been better.

I think they should dye his skin hunter orange, place him in front of any Army post with a sign that says "I faked being a Soldier with a purpose of evasion and profit," and let anyone with a government ID take a shot at him with a closed fist. That would be (get ready)....

Corporal Punishment. :D
