View Full Version : AZ Sheriff Arpaio
Can't find a print link but FINALLY a LE boss with some balls. Arizona Maricopa Sheriff Joe Arpaio is making room in county facilities and starting to arrest and house illegal aliens with the hope of introducing said criminals to the American judicial system. This represents a drop in the bucket but it's a start. I hope other LE leaders follow this great americans' lead!
Immigration crackdown intensifies, By William Hermann and Judi Villa. The Arizona Republic, May. 11, 2006. (http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/0511bust0511.html)
"These people are in this for the cash," state Attorney General Terry Goddard said. "If we're going to cut off this poison, we're going to do it by making it unprofitable to conduct human smuggling."
I have to disagree with the good AG's reasoning here.
Sheriff's posse targets illegal immigrants in Arizona (http://kvoa.com/Global/story.asp?S=4890366&nav=HMO6)
BTW ....... WTF is an undocumented immigrant? Is it the same as an unlicensed pharmaceutical purveyor?

Sheriff Arpaio is an idiot.
He needs to retire...... his "tough" style has done ZERO to reduce crime, ZERO.
He's lost touch with reality (decades ago) and has replaced it with his own..... He spends more time in front of the cameras then at his desk.....
He's an idiot.

He's an idiot.

As in the Team - The Team Sergeant has spoken. :D
Must be some internal knowledge with that said so well
Yeah. TS is is right and I agree. However. Arpaio and his posse are at least doing something in this County (Maricopa). Like the Minutemen, his posse, works for free. No cost to taxpayers. In past years, they were busting prostitutes down on Van Buren. The guy is a media/spotlight hog, no doubt and these days an idiot. Then again, at least in Maricopa County here, they are rounding up illegals. Soon this will hit the human smugglers and they will go around Maricopa County and drop in from the North. Thing is this county stretches a long way from South to North.
TS,
I don't live there so I respect the fact you have much more exposure to Sheriff Arpaio and his daily activities than I do, but doesn't a blind squirrel sometimes find a nut?
Out of curiosity what are some of his past actions which make him an idiot? I remember him in the news some time back where he set up a tent city to house prisoners in the desert; thats about the extent of my knowledge of him.

I almost joined his posse a few years ago, then I went to a posse meeting. Sheriff Joe was there. I was not impressed, in fact I was very dismayed at the lack of organization, the Boy Scouts are better organized.
Five-O, read the article below, it speaks for itself and to Sheriff Joe's lack of intelligence......

First night of posse patrols nets one arrest
May 11, 2006 12:31 PM MST
Following a week of tough talk, a 250-member sheriff's posse charged with finding and arresting illegal immigrants made just one arrest in its inaugural desert search early Thursday morning.
The posse, made up of existing sheriff's deputies and unpaid, trained volunteers, on Wednesday night launched night patrols in desert areas and major roadways southwest of Phoenix.
They're looking for illegal immigrants to arrest under a state smuggling law that allows local law enforcement to arrest and charge suspected human and drug smugglers with a state-level felony. Smuggling already was a federal felony.
Since March, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office has arrested 147 illegal immigrants and smugglers under the law as contentiously interpreted by Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas.
Rest of the story....

A positive that this may result in is pressure on other enforcement agencies to step up and do something. I think there is a rapidly building sense amongst taxpayers here in Maricopa County that action is needed, and that the fed and state gov'ts are avoiding involvement. Public pressure combined with county involvement may end up playing out with fed/AZ action. Hopefully anyway.

Dave:
I agree.
After seeing that the USG was tipping off the Mex government as to the locations of the Minutemen and their patrols, clearly the onus is on the state and local governments to deal with this problem.
The Feds want nothing to do with it, despite the fact that protection of the nation's borders are one of the few Constitutionally mandated requirements of the Federal government.
I am ashamed of my government for their massive failure to address this problem in a timely manner. Seal the border as best we can, heavily penalize employers who hire illegals, and start sending illegals back as fast as they pop up. Anything we can do to make the economy of Mexico better and reduce the problems that drive the illegals here would be a good thing as well. Simple solutions, cowardly officials.

I doubt it Dave. Rmemeber that Sheriff Joe is an "elected" politician, he can and does what he wants. The Phoenix Chief of Police does what he's told...... As far as I know the Phoenix PD has a "catch and release" order when dealing with illegals.
I don't see much changing, the status que will not change....
TS - Agreed the Phoenix PD is about as likely as LAPD to go in and enforce the laws on illegals. The voting demographics in Phoenix is now pretty close to Los Angeles: A swing against illegals is a sure vote out of the mayoral position. But I think, IMHO, the political arguments on the gubernatorial and fed side will cause huge political debate, and possibly some action 12-18 mos out. Hopefully anyway.
This has unfortunately gone from a simple question of law enforcement for the public good to a political debate, possibly displacing homeland terrorist threats in magnitude. **edited*** Or maybe I'm naive.
I'm not an expert on the subject, and I'm not in the area to observe first hand, but from what I've been able to see on the news/read the more these wackos (like the guy organizing the boycott) push for amnesty and what not, the more the politicians/LEGAL residents push for stricter enforcement. because the illegals and their amigos have made such a huge deal about it, it actually seems to be turning around on them as more and more people take the side against them. Thats just what I can see though, I could be wrong.
As far as the sheriff goes, anyone who knows anything about the SO knows the sheriff is just there to play politics and the chief deputy actually runs the place. As long as theres a competent chief in the department things usually go well. This guy though.... hes a little out there....
Something else I was thinking about:
After 9/11 there was an increase in the number of people enlisting DOD wide. I wonder if because of all this there will be an increase in USBP/ICE recruitment/hiring as people react to this growing issue?
