Saw a report on this "new" Active Protection System (APS) for vehicles. A real working Force field!! It's possible that, U.S. armored vehicles, including infantry fighting vehicles/armored personnel carriers (IFV/APC) and main battle tanks (MBT), could possible be receiving a new type of anti-RPG/ATGM (Rocket Propelled Grenade/Anti-Tank Guided Missile) Active Protection System. Seems that an Israeli company has developed this APS -TROPHY-APS (http://www.defense-update.com/products/t/trophy.htm)

TROPHY (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TROPHY_Active_Protection_System) (in Hebrew: "מעיל רוח", lit. "Wind Coat") is a protective shield system for both light and heavy armored vehicles that intercepts and destroys missiles and rockets with a shotgun-like blast just before they hit. TROPHY was developed by RAFAEL (http://www.rafael.co.il/marketing/news.aspx?FolderID=444&docID=964&searchText=APS) together with Israel Aircraft Industries' Elta Group. The system is known as an "active protection system" (APS). The developers claim it is a major milestone in weapons design. They would have a system like TROPHY reduce or eliminate the need for heavy armor for combat vehicles.

If this systems is better deployed; I say this because from a FOX News report, TROPHY was tested within the USA and had two successful "protection" of vehicles. But it didn't say how many failures there were. But this is a Great system - Way I see it, it show that the idea can work. RPGs (http://science.howstuffworks.com/rpg3.htm)and ATGM all use a PIBD Peizo-electic fuze system. So with the right "energy" you could "over-ride" the Fuze and make it function. Smart thinking, give it to the Israeli's to come up with it.

Take a look. To Download and Play the FOX News Trophy APS Demo Video Clip:

Right-click on this link (http://www.defensereview.com/stories/trophy/040606_fr_tobin_300.swf) and then click on "Save Target As" to download a Fox News video clip on Trophy APS, which shows the technology being demonstrated. Once you've downloaded the video clip, right-click on the file, then click on "Open With". Then, click on your web browser or Windows Media Player. This will/should launch the video clip.

This seems similar to the the Quick-kill system Raytheon tested recently.

It's about time we venture a bit deeper into Active Defense systems... The current generation of AFV's just aren't designed for this slow moving, urban LIC stuff. Non-modular thick as heck armor packages are great when the threat is frontal and can be engaged at Max eff ranges, but when the threat is close (difficult to engage with direct fire) and hitting you in not so hardened areas it can be a different story. A mobility kill in an urban environment can't be too pleasant of an experience. I really hope that a viable system is developed and implemented for these guys fighting mounted.
