I'd like to limit this to team sergeants and sergeants major, please. Care to share any verbal communication techniques you've found to be particularly effective? I will admit that I am seeking some entertainment here. :munchin
Now watch Team Sergeant put this thread in the rucksack in the hall forum . . .

Team Sgts and Sergeants Major do not chew ass, they stimulate that motivational spark within so as to be constructive.:D Ass chewing is normally done by high ranking officers who usually know little about what caused the performance failure (usually because of something that they failed to make clear, failed to provide resources for, or required something idiotic that when complied with came out badly like everyone except that officer knew it would) and realized too late that they were the cause of the problem to begin with. So, rather than doing something constructive or accepting responsibility for the consequences of poor leadership they just reinforce their lunacy by reminding everyone that they are in charge but somehow not responsible.
An ass chewing is an ass chewing, some are better at giving them than others. An ass chewing is easy to blow off. Took some and gave some.
What hurts worse is to have somebody you respect give you a sad look, shake their head and say they are very disappointed in your actions.
You know you did wrong, they know it and are disappointed in what you did.
I can think of only two times that happened to me. Both were a learning experience and I grew and moved on.

This technique is in 'Motherhood 1010'. :munchin

Only works with self-respecting professionals...doesn't work with total dirt bags...they'll just think they got over.

Best one I know of was when a UK Royal Marine Commando commander/LtCol was asked by a US Marine Gunny why, when one of the RM sergeants was late to a range firing practice after a late night "on the piss", his SGM was not ripping the sergeant a new .....hole, the LtCol replied "That would leave no room for escalation now would it?"
